Star Trek: Picard - Episode 7 "Nepenthe"

Star Trek: Picard Episode 7 Recap / Review - "Nepenthe"
Now that’s how you bring back the Enterprise crewmembers.
The return of Will Riker and Deanna Troi in Picard Episode 7, "Nepenthe," is pretty much a flawless affair, upending expectations and avoiding clichés while also packing the emotional wallop that this show has finally started to figure out how to do in the back half of its first season.
While Star Trek: Picard has purposely sent Patrick Stewart’s title character off in a very non-Next Generation direction, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis’ guest-spins as Jean-Luc’s beloved (former) first officer and counselor, respectively, provide a perfect reunion, sad at times, uplifting at others, and often just plain funny too.

Previews for next week's episode "Broken Pieces"
RIP Hugh
Okay, this was a really good episode, but I just browsed through several recap articles for it and not one so far has even touched on the absolute craziness of Elnor finding a Fenris SOS beacon in some random hiding spot that he just happened to end up in on the Artifact.
I assume it's the same one Seven gave to Picard, but how could Picard have possibly known where to leave it for Elnor?
Did I miss something? I must have missed something...
Also, was Agnes trying to kill herself or just destroy the tracking device?
And is Commodore Oh a Vulcan working with the Romulans, or a Romulan in disguise who can do mind melds?
Maybe not?
I think she was clearly trying to destroy the tracking device by the way she seemed to talk herself into it and almost confessed.
Definitely a Vulcan, but I don't think that this is just a single species operation.
Just my take... I could be very wrong.
That's what I thought, too, but for some reason this recap article claimed she was committing suicide.
I assume that Oh is a Romulan posing as a Vulcan. Her henchwoman is a Romulan posing as a human Star Fleet Lieutenant. But then again, do Romulans have the power to mind meld like she did with Agnes? Oi vey, one could get a headache thinking about it!
I don't remember ever seeing a Romulan performing a mind meld.
Maybe we're going to get some more backstory on why the Vulcans and Romulans took diverging paths thousands of years ago.
I've wondered about Romulans and mind melds a few times before.
This could get interesting.
I finally got CBS All Access but it constantly stops and reloads or just stops all together. I want to see Picard and discuss it with you all.
Just from my own experience, All Access doesn't seem to be as good as other streaming services like Netflix. It's as if their encoding is different and requires more bandwidth or something.
Have you been able to get through any of it at all?
I got thru one Star Trek short and that is it. I was waiting until I had time to watch an entire episode.
I hope it ends up working for you.
Me, too!
Try it on a PC with a big monitor, you will love it.
We tried it on a lap top connected to a 60" TV but it was all washed out.
hmmm...I guess I need a trip to Best Buy, eh?
It's possible other devices in your house were competing for internet when you were trying to watch. That happens to me sometimes.
When you try again, maybe make sure that you're the only one using the internet, and that any computers or tablets you have turned on aren't trying to update.
Thanks for the advice. I will try that
I/we have watched it on a laptop too...
There's an idea! I have one of those!
Also, if your device is getting something over 75 Mbits per second then you should have no problem streaming. Nowadays that is easily achieved even with wifi connections.
You do realize you're speaking Greek to me, don't you?
On your iPhone, download the app called Speedtest. It will tell you how fast your wifi signal is to your iPhone. You can also access speedtest via a browser (speedtest.net) to test the speed of the connection for the current device.
If you are getting 75 Mbits per second or more to a device then you should have no problem streaming on that device (assuming the device is not ancient and bogged down with a slow CPU, low memory, etc.).
I would run the test three times to get a decent sampling.
I don't have an Iphone so could I run this on my laptop? Is there anyway I could run this on my Smart TV? It's got a Firestick. That's all I know about it. After that, you have to speak with my son-in-law
The app runs on other smartphones.
Fire TV Stick runs off of WiFi. So what I would do is place your laptop next to the TV with the Fire TV Stick. Then test the WiFi speed the laptop is realizing. That will be the WiFi speed the Fire TV Stick also realizes.
Also, you should use the Fire TV Stick 4K (rather than the older version) or the Fire TV Cube.
Got it! That was simple. Thanks for dumbing it down for me
What were you watching it on before when it was hanging up, TG?
I just downloaded CBS All Access. I hadn't been watching it at all. Now, Mr Giggles was watching CBS in the Man Cave on his huge-ass TV and not having any problems
Are you asking me what I was watching on my TV before it started hanging up? All kinds of stuff, Sling, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime
I did not dumb it down, just used more conventional English.
I was just wondering what device you were trying to watch Star Trek Picard on. I was going to suggest we focus on getting it working on your TV.
Did you say you just downloaded the All Access app to the TV that has the Firestick? If so, then you should be good to go.
Yes, I downloaded the app to the Firestick TV. I think it just may be my internet connection. I have problems with it on other apps
Also need to make sure you are watching it on Google Chrome. All Access won't accept any other format as far as I know.
I have CBS All Access on Roku and also on desktop.
You should be able to see it on a computer or any device that streams video.
Browsers won't be an issue. She's using a dedicated streaming device on her TV.
I have looked at All Access using Edge, and Chrome browsers.
Then All Access must have upgraded their service. I talked to them about a month ago when I could not access using edge. The lady in customer service is the one who told me to use Google Chrome exclusively as they had not gotten the bugs out regarding other formats. I guess they have since done so. Thanks for the update.
Could be. You can definitely get CBS All Access with the Edge browser though. I'm looking at it right now.
All I can say is that I have never said "Holy Shit" about a series so many times. Ever.
Me too! And in a good way.
Hugh! :'(
Yeah, that really bummed me out also.
Like most I thought it was a good episode as well but I do have a couple observations:
- How weak willed is Agnes? I mean one brief mind meld with a few scary images and she's suddenly all on board to betray her new friends, kill an old friend and to be tracked across the universe? To the best of my knowledge a mind meld doesn't brainwash people.
- was that the original actress that played Deanna Troy or a replacement? I honestly could not pick up on any resemblance
That was Marina Sirtis. Remember, it's been 18 years since "Nemesis", and I believe that she has expressed an aversion to cosmetic surgery, with the exception of a breast augmentation that she later regretted.
Understood Sandy, it's just the differences really caught me off guard. The rest of the old cast were easy to recognize, Picard was Picard, Will was Will, 7 was 7 (I know Voyager is newer), oh well not a biggie. Thanks
No problem.
I thought this was easily the best episode so far! And a joint appearance by Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner on the Ready Room afterwards giving their insight just made it even better.
Started watching ST Discovery today. Only real criticism so far is the totally non canon looking Klingons! Wonder why they did that...
Yeah, they kinda went overboard with the Klingons. Does the ship and the 'spore drive' bother you at all? They sure did me. They're going to have to find some way to limit the spore drive just to that series. Make it impossible to use afterward or something. I mean, instant travel to anywhere in the universe? That's a pretty big deal, and DSC is supposed to be pre-Kirk.
The spore drive just struck me as being silly, but yeah, it's also a major continuity issue.
Well a couple of the shorts I saw indicate that the ship itself was abandoned in some hidden place far off the beaten track. So without the ship and crew limiting it to that series seems possible
Yeah, the spore ships kind of bothered me. But then I thought about Species 8472 from Voyager with their warp capable bio-ships from fluidic space. Was that any less way out there?
I haven't watched any of the Discovery shorts, but (SPOLER ALERT for anyone not caught up on it) I know they're having a big time travel jump in the coming season. Sending them to the distant future and having the technology banned and classified in the past might do the trick.
Oh, I didn't mean in a crazy technology sort of way, but in a continuity sort of way. The spore drive just doesn't fit into established pre-Kirk canon, or post-Kirk canon for that matter (up to the present Picard time, at least).
Considering that it blows regular warp drive out of the water, they're going to have to figure out a way to explain why nobody else ever used it, or even mentioned it in any of the previous shows.
Thing is, at least one alternate universe is using spore drive and we know they can pollute the spore infrastructure and ultimately destroy the fabric of spacetime across all universes. So somehow access to the spores must have stopped for all universes.
That does complicate things. Yeah, they're going to have to come up with something that will apply to the mirror universe as well.
I could really do without all of that mirror universe stuff. I wish they would have just left it in that one episode in the original series. I always skip over the mirror episodes when I rewatch DS9. Can't really do that with Discovery, though.
I'm watching Discovery slowly. I'm having trouble keeping interest through the mirror universe stuff.
I know exactly what you mean. I almost threw in the towel on Discovery when I realized it was going to be such a big part of the story arc.
Same here. I am into episode 12 of season 1. Still trying to get a feel for it.
I am getting to feel very comfortable with the show. They are slowly developing a strong TNG foundation and that gives the Picard series depth and believability.
I just now finished this week's show (was occupied yesterday).
Gotta say, I'm really happy with this show so far. I've been waiting for a continuation of the TNG/DS9/VOY storyline since 2001, so I'm tickled pink about it.
It's a crying shame that they decided to go with only 10 episodes per season, though. Discovery got 15 in the first season and 14 in the second. I don't understand that at all. They really need to make longer Picard seasons going forward.
