The Ukrainian military has denied launching a missile attack on the separatist-controlled city of Donetsk, after the Russian defence ministry said that 23 civilians had been killed in a Ukrainian missile attack. Russia said that the Tochka-U missile had also wounded 28 people in the eastern Ukrainian city in what it described as a "war crime".

Earlier on Monday, a local separatist leader had told Russia's TASS news agency that a Tochka-U missile had been intercepted over the rebel stronghold, but that parts of it had landed in the city centre.

Denis Pushilin, the head of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic", said residential areas were damaged.

"People were waiting in line near an ATM and were standing at a bus stop," he told the Rossiya 24 network. "There are children among the dead," Pushilin added.

However, the Ukrainian military has been quick to deny the attack.

"It is unmistakably a Russian rocket or another munition, there's not even any point talking about it," Ukrainian military spokesman Leonid Matyukhin told a televised briefing.

Asked about reports of a Ukrainian attack on Donetsk, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was a tragedy.

Both the death toll and the incident could not be independently verified. The territory has been controlled by pro-Russia rebels since 2014.

Reports of the attack came as Ukrainian and Russian negotiators met for a fourth round of talks since Russia invaded its neighbouring country on February 24. The talks ended after several hours without a breakthrough.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has said the objective of his war in Ukraine, which he has dubbed a "special military operation", is the "demilitarisation and denazification" of the Ukrainian government.

He claims Kyiv has been carrying out a "genocide" against the Russian-speaking population of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, collectively known as the Donbas, where the Ukrainian army has been fighting Russia-backed separatists since 2014. Ukraine denies the allegation.

The conflict, which erupted after rebels seized parts of the Donbas and self-declared the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, has killed more than 14,000 people, including soldiers, civilians and rebel fighters.

BTW, the troops in the attached image aren't Russians, according to the news report.  There are Ukrainians fighting alongside Russians.

In other words, the Ukrainians fighting alongside the Russians are traitors to their country.  If these folk did not like the nation of Ukraine, why didn't they move to Russia?  And on an aside, who is arming them, paying them and to what end are these traitors seeking?

They've been fighting for their independence since the popular uprising in Kyiv forced out the elected government in 2014.  The war in Donbas claimed 14,000 lives over eight years.  And the fighting has been on Russia's border for those eight years.

Well its obvious Russia can;'t get along with their neighbours.

Remember when Russian tanks moved into several eastern European countries and conquered them by force?

Against the peoples' desire for independence? (of course they installed  puppet governments, which the citizens finally  bravely overthrew over the years).

And Russian strategy has always been to do it as  brutally as possible , deliberately targeting civilians-- and leveling huge amounts of civilian housing, hospitals, etc. (Anyone remember what they did in Syria? Chechnya?)

There is no such thing as (Independence) in The Putin Regime.

The 'so called elected government' which was ousted in 2014 was installed by Putin.  It was corrupt.  The leaders fled to Russia where Putin protects them from justice.

Why do you carry Putin's water buckets?

The Donbas War has claimed 14,000 lives and still counting.  Every time Putin touches anything people die.

I ask again.  Why do you carry Putin's water buckets?

Oh, Russia has reported a war crime.  Isn’t that rich?  That’s like the bank robber that sued the guard who shot him while he was robbing the bank.

Odd.  A 'War Crime' committed in a combat situation that the foreign aggressor says it is not committing war crimes?  Damn.  That is 'twisty', ya think?

This is what Putin's propaganda machine puts out to provide cover among Russians and his apologists for Russian war crimes against Ukrainian civilians.

If Russia didn't invaded Ukraine it wouldn't happen.

Russia Says 23 Dead In Missile Attack On Donetsk

I first read the headline-- and stopped for a minute after just two words.

"Russia Says".

On one hand, ya could always say "anything's possible"....

But once I see "Russia says"...the odds are its a blatant lie.

Watching coverage of suffering and destruction in Ukraine. Of Ukranian women, children and old people being killed. Of Ukrainians trying to escape with their lives. it is awfully hard for me to feel sorry for these few dead Russian combatants...

As someone here thinks we should.

Which makes me wonder-- should I start posting Russian propaganda on NT?

Of course I have a right to do that if I wish, but I can't help but wonder-- what's the point?

So speaking for myself...I don't post Russian propaganda...and will not do in the future.

We are through the looking glass in Orwellian Land. The madman Putin's war crimes are all Joe Biden's fault and the USA forced Russia to invade Ukraine!

Who thinks that way? It get curiouser-n-curiouser!

The war in Ukraine and the civilian deaths at the hand of the criminal Russians and their government have absolutely nothing to do with MAGA.

Someone else makes a bogus claim about MAGA and then asks you to "prove it". Seems like the onus is on the person making the original claim to substantiate it. Deflection at it's finest Now that's hilarious! 🤣

Some people posting here just do not comprehend that equating common sense and logic to leftist liberal ideology are in many cases mutually exclusive.

Well, I guess everyone is too busy trying to spin their own propaganda to look at the details.  Maybe that's why the United States can't win wars anymore?

The missile in question was intercepted.  Those things aren't going to stay up in the air once they're hit.  What goes up must come down.  Movie physics doesn't explain how the real world works.

What the incident suggests is that the Ukrainian government is still fighting the war in Donbas in the midst of an invasion.  The Ukrainian government is not drawing its military assets back to defend Kyiv.  And the separatists in Donbas are still fighting.

The Russians are parodying Zelensky's hair-on-fire claims.  The Ukrainian government isn't going to force the Russians out of Ukraine.  And the Ukrainian government is not going to subdue the separatists militarily even though they keep trying.

Bottom line is that the Soviets are killing each other.  Let them.  Kyiv is just as bad as the Kremlin.  There aren't any good guys in this war.
