Looks like Democrats are going to get Trump no matter who wins the election.

Vice President Kamala Harris has backed the elimination of taxes on tips for hospitality and service workers, endorsing a policy first suggested by former President Donald Trump.

Harris’ support came ahead of an economic plan rollout this week and It also came as the vice president seeks to coalesce support from the sizable coalition of service industry workers in the key battleground state of Nevada.

Speaking to a crowd of thousands at a Saturday rally in Las Vegas, which included members of a local culinary workers union, Harris promised to advance policies to benefit working families, pointing to the elimination of taxes on tips as an example.

“It is my promise to everyone here when I am president, we will continue our fighting for working families of America including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” she said.

Trump, who first proposed the idea at his own Las Vegas campaign rally in June, accused Harris of copying him.

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” Trump posted on his Truth Social social media platform. The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes! This was a TRUMP idea - She has no ideas, she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY - It won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

After Trump’s proposal in June, Culinary Union Local 226’s secretary-treasurer Ted Pappageorge pushed back on his promise: “Relief is definitely needed for tip earners, Nevada workers are smart enough to know the difference between real solutions and wild campaign promises from a convicted felon.”

Harris on Saturday recognized members of the union in attendance at the rally, one day after Culinary Union Local 226 officially endorsed Harris.

The proposal is among the first notable policies offered by Harris since ascending to the top of the Democratic ticket last month. Speaking to reporters in Arizona earlier Saturday, Harris said she plans to roll out her policy platform this week, noting it’ll be focused on “what we need to do to bring down costs and also strengthen the economy.”

The Harris campaign expounded on her endorsement of eliminating taxes on tips for hospitality and service workers, saying in a statement that she “would work with Congress” on a proposal that would set income limits and include measures to prevent fraud.

A Harris campaign official said her plan to eliminate taxes on tips would come alongside a push for Congress to raise the minimum wage.

“On Saturday, Vice President Harris said as president, she would push for the elimination of taxes on tips,” the official said in a statement. “The proposal would require legislation. As President, she would work with Congress to craft a proposal that comes with an income limit and with strict requirements to prevent hedge fund managers and lawyers from structuring their compensation in ways to try to take advantage of the policy.”

“Vice President Harris would push for the proposal alongside an increase in the minimum wage,” she continued.

Why settle for a fake Kamala Trump when the real deal is available?  Harris has adopted Trump's style of politics.  Now Harris is adopting Trump's policy proposals.

So, what is Harris going to run on after the DNC convention?  Are we going to hear how Kamala has bigger hands?

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

So what if she is endorsing the policy?  Good for her!

The real deal?  jrSmiley_10_smiley_image.gif

Actually she's not endorsing that policy.

Because the policy was flawed (& knowing what we know about Trump it was deliberately flawed!)

Trump's was designed so that wealthy individuals  could get the tax breaks. (AFor example, awealthy hedge fund manage could write off part of their income as "tips"-- even it it wasn't really tips. Kamela fixed that flaw-- her policy wouldn't allow that.

Now Harris is adopting Trump's policy proposals.

Proposals that Trump never carried through on.  Trump promised a lot, not all were honest however, most were simply promises to gain votes with no intent to carry through on.

Trump made many dishonest promises, many were good ideas because of who he was making the promises to, so why is it so surprising to you that some are also agreed to by Kamala?  Many of Trump's false promises reflected democratic ideals.

So, what is Harris going to run on after the DNC convention?

Following through on the promises?

The Harris campaign expounded on her endorsement of eliminating taxes on tips for hospitality and service workers, saying in a statement that she “would work with Congress” on a proposal that would set income limits and include measures to prevent fraud.

She's had years to do something and hasn't.  The idea that she suddenly cares is laughable.

It's why she can't articulate any plans about anything. "Why haven't you done it yet?" is the obvious rejoinder

Why didn’t Trump do anything about it when he was POTUS?  Rhetorical question, of course.  Trump has never actually done anything for the average citizen, he just lies repeatedly to them to try and get them to think he will.

Because inflation wasn't a problem then.  That all started under Biden.  But don't let that stop your failed comparison of somebody who is out of office vs somebody in office that could  / should have done something.

Lol.  Most restaurant workers barely make enough to get by, inflation or not.  This is pandering on both sides.

"Culinary Union has led the fight for over 30 years for fair taxation on tips and our union supports the ban on taxes on tips."

.

“… we’re going to do that right away, first thing in office, because it’s been a point of contention for years and years and years,”

- Donald Trump

A point of contention uttered not one single time during the Trump administration.  The truth about Trump’s intentions is more likely rooted in schemes for the wealthy to restructure earnings to pay less taxes.

To be clear, you are asking why Harris didn’t do what Trump didn’t do?  And you are insinuating that a Trump promise to do what he didn’t do is somehow more genuine than a Harris promise to do what she hasn’t done?  You have pretzeled yourself into an interesting argument.  Trump is a prolific and infamous liar who only engages in transactional policies.  You can bet that his intention is to create further tax cheating loopholes whereby wealthy people use the concept of tips to structure earnings and avoid taxes.  Imagine future hedge fund managers paying themselves and their associates minimum wage, and claiming the profits as tips.  At least Harris has the foresight to address this with her policy before it has a chance to happen.  Notice how Trump has zero details on his.

In 2.2 you post

Why didn’t Trump do anything about it when he was POTUS?

When pressed, you post in 2.8

To be clear, you are asking why Harris didn’t do what Trump didn’t do?

So to be clear, you are stating that Trump promised to stop taxing tips back when was running or already elected President. Then you tell us to read the attached article. Well, in the attached article it's quite clear that Trump FIRST PROPOSED this idea in his rally this June in Las Vegas.

Trump, who first  proposed  the idea at his own Las Vegas campaign rally in June, accused Harris of copying him. Harris endorses eliminating taxes on tips, touting policy first proposed by Trump | CNN Politics

Perhaps you should read slower to better comprehend what you are reading.

Not only all this , but many restaurant workers have their tips taken, in part, by the owners and managers of the restaurant.  I have a niece who has worked in the restaurant business for about a decade now and she says that when she was a waitress, at a high end restaurant no less, the manager and owner took a share of the tips.

“…how some will twist everything to try and make trump the bad guy…”

There is no twisting required here.

The only thing one needs is a basic understanding of the consequences of what has been said, what has been written and what has been promised by the protagonist, or more tragically. the prophet in question.

That he remains a choice, much less a champion for some (S/ duly noted) is beyond belief.

Just remember folks, the Harris that is now telling you she will not tax workers tips, is the same Harris that worked  with Biden and the IRS to institute the IRS SITCA program, that targeted business owners who did not aggressively report tipping wages.  This was just 18 months ago.

It's simple. She saw that Trump scored some points for that promise so when she followed him to Vegas she copied what he said in an attempt to gain the same points. Sure she figures that if she wins in November she can later say that she doesn't have the power to change tax law, that must come from Congress so if those damn Republicans would just pass a law that I want I would be sure to sign it.

To be fair, I don't believe that Trump would do any less as the President on their own cannot change tax laws. This is, I believe, a typical campaign promise destined to never be filled. In other words, SSDD.

I think it’s a dumb idea, regardless of what politician endorses it. It’s income for service rendered. Tax it.

What if doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc just decided to restructure their compensation as tips instead of salaries? No one would pay taxes. And I’m not going buy into the suggestion that the law can prevent that.

It’s also unfair considering people in different locations do similar jobs but maybe get more of their income from wages than from tips. Same income, but different tax payment.

We’d be better off just outlawing tips.

Agreed. Follow the European method and raise salaries to compensate for the lack of tips and to cover that raise the prices accordingly. But you know there would be a huge outcry over raising prices. For the same reason why we have such crappy airlines in this country, the public demands the lowest prices.
