Working class residents are fleeing New York City because it's too expensive, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Monday.

The congresswoman made the claim during a discussion of the migrant crisis and Mayor Eric Adams' controversial across-the-board proposed budget cuts that would shrink the police force and trim spending on schools, libraries and cultural arts programs.

During her tele-town hall meeting, she wondered why the mayor and council weren't looking to boost taxes on the wealthy — such as pricey pied-a-terre or luxury crash pads for the jet-setting ultra rich.

She said the data doesn't back up claims that the wealthiest residents will leave over raising their taxes, though recent census data indicates more high-income New Yorkers including billionaires have moved out.

"But guess what? The people who are moving out of the city are not by and large the wealthiest people. They're the working class. They can't afford to live here any more," she said.

That's often the argument that conservatives make, arguing that New York's higher costs ranging from taxes to housing to regulations pushes New Yorkers of all means to move to lower-tax, lower cost states such as Florida.

Soooo out of touch. Most virtue signalers are though I suppose. Pushing for handouts like California?

Something is not squaring up with this. There is a shortage of high-end apartments:

A shortage of luxury apartments in Manhattan is causing a surge in prices at the top of the market.  The supply of luxury apartments has plunged 24% compared to pre-pandemic levels , according to Miller Samuel.

.

The Luxury Apartment Dilemma in Manhattan: Rising Prices Amidst a Shortage

It seems more like the rich are moving in.

Also, there is just a shortage of apartments in general:

While the city always seems to be building and expanding, experts say it is not fast enough to keep up with demand.   Zoning restrictions, the cost of building and the ability by politicians to come up with a solution   are among the barriers to increasing the supply of housing. Aug 2, 2022

.

There is truth to the fact that two things can both be true.

Explain to us what all this jabbering about billionaires leaving NYC has to do with what AOC said.

I'll explain it to you - nothing.

New York has lost 10 billionaires in the last four years — three of whom fled to Florida — leaving tax coffers lighter by tens of millions of dollars annually.

This year 62 New York-based billionaires appeared on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans, compared to 72 in 2019 and 65 last year.

Investor and Washington Commanders owner  Josh Harris , whose net worth was valued at $5.7 billion last year, has grown his fortune to $6.9 billion — but he packed his bags for Florida.

Other billionaires who have relocated from Gotham to the Sunshine State in the last four years include  hedge funder Daniel Och  — whose net worth now stands at $3.6 billion — and  investor Carl Icahn , who’s worth $6.9 billion.

New York City's 2024 budget is 107 BILLION dollars. A loss of even 100 million ( tax coffers lighter by tens of millions of dollars annually.      because of leaving billionaires would be roughly 1/1000 of the budget.

In other words, the attack on AOC for saying the city is too expensive for lower income people is devoid of reality.

That wasn't the point. The point is, she is saying that none of the rich are moving and that is wrong. And why did you restrict your commentary to strictly billionaires?

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes working class New Yorkers are leaving the Big Apple because it's too expensive. Recent census data indicates more high-income New Yorkers, including billionaires, have moved out.

The defense of her ineptness doesn't seem to hold water.

And yes, lower income people are moving. That is the only part of her commentary she has right.

Guess what, sweetie pie? It's not just the cost of living that's caused people to move out of NYC. It's also:

  • Defunding NYPD
  • High crime rates
  • Rioting, "protests" that shut down bridges and major thoroughfares
  • Failing, unsafe schools
  • Draconian mandates
  • Small businesses forced to close because of high crime
  • The stench of pot, urine, feces, and garbage

No one defunded nor suggested that the NYPD be defunded.

That's where you are 200+% wrong.

For 2023:

T he NYPD’s force will be reduced to just 29,000 cops by the end of fiscal year 2025 — the lowest level since the mid-90s — amid a slew of city-wide budget cuts revealed by Mayor Eric Adams Thursday as the Big Apple grapples with its multi-billion-dollar migrant crisis.

2021:

For the 2021 fiscal year, the $1 billion reduction in the NYPD's operating budget includes $484 million in cuts to the department; shifting the command of school officers to the Department of Education; eliminating two of the four NYPD training classes this year, which reduced headcount by 1,163 uniform officers; and reducing overtime spending by $352 million, according to the city council.

Need more evidence? Look it up yourself.

The Honorable AOC may be missing the big picture - people of all income levels and businesses big and small are leaving NYC and or simply folding because of high crime, high taxes, high rents ......

And it is not just NYC Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago and other major cities are seeing similar emigrations of people and commerce

As little as I think generally of AOC, I'm not sure she's very wrong here.  The sheer number of working class people vs the number of billionaires would make it extremely probable that more of them would react to economic pressure.

I do not disagree with your premise at all, merely pointing outing that this is not the problem, it is a symptom of many things that are wrong in NYC that the outflow of citizens and businesses to the suburbs, to other cities or to oblivion will continue until the root causes of NYC's problems are dealth with appropriately.

Hello Robert.  Are you new to the platform here?  If so, welcome aboard.

Yeah... I'm sure NYC has its share of problems, but then that's not really new.  I'm just making the point that her math is probably not wrong... which would be unusual for her in my experience.
