Democratic mayors blame Greg Abbott for immigration 'chaos' in cities | Washington Examiner
Democratic mayors in Chicago and Denver are blaming Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) for the "chaos" surrounding the influx of immigrants to their cities, calling for "better coordination" to address the issue.

Democraticmayors in Chicago and Denver are blaming Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) for the "chaos" surrounding the influx of immigrants to their cities, calling for "better coordination" to address the issue.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said in a Sunday interview with CBS News's Face the Nation that local governments are feeling the pressure of the crisis at the southern border as Abbott continues to bus thousands of migrants to cities across the United States.

"What we have is clearly, clearly an international and federal crisis that local governments are being asked to subsidize and this is unsustainable. None of our local economies are positioned to be able to carry on such a mission," Johnson said.

"Unfortunately, the governor of Texas, Governor Abbott, is determined to continue to sow seeds of chaos. And last night, and several nights before, a number of buses continue to arrive in the city of Chicago, throughout the country, without any coordination," the Chicago mayor added.

More than 14,000 migrants are living in 27 city shelters in Chicago, with over 26,000 immigrants having arrived in the Windy City since August 2022. In Denver, over 35,000 immigrants have arrived within the last year.

The buses "that are being dropped off across this country in the middle of the night, leaving people with no real support at all, no coordination with the local municipalities — that type of chaos is certainly dividing our country, and we need better coordination between all levels of government to be able to respond to this mission," Johnson said.

Johnston, the Denver mayor, said he is pushing for a system that is humanitarian for both the "new folks that are arriving" and city residents and employees.

"What we don't want is people arriving at two o'clock in the morning at a city and county building with women and children outside in 10-degree weather and no support," Johnston said.

"We understand the flow is coming. We just want it to be coordinated and in a humanitarian way which we think makes it effective for the city and for those newcomers," the Denver mayor added when asked about Denver looking to impose bus restrictions similar to those in Chicago and New York City.

Both Johnson and Johnston said they have communicated to the White House about what their cities need to handle the influx of migrants, with the Denver mayor stating that he thinks this is a "solvable problem."

"We need federal dollars to help support our work here in the cities. We also need federal dollars for more support at the border, the ability to adjudicate asylum claims more quickly so they can be done in 90 days and not in four to six years — that makes a massive difference," Johnston said.

Johnston added that having the resources to expedite work authorization so cities can put migrants to work, "which is what they want," would be a better option for cities now bearing the brunt of the influx.

Cities need "a coordinated entry plan where it's not just the governor of Texas deciding what cities to send people to, but it's actually the way we've welcomed asylees in this country for years," the Denver mayor said.

That should have been:

"We need federal dollars to support our own fucked-up policies and those of this Administration".

Stop your damn whining, Democratic mayors of sanctuaries.

You wanted these policies--PAY FOR THEM YOURSELF!

I am getting tired of these Democratic mayors expecting us all to pay for their policies which put immigrants in front of Americans.

I wonder how many Americans living in the streets would love to get free food, shelter, etc.?

How 'bout tens of thousands more people in the U.S. were homeless in 2023 compared with 2022 as high costs of living pushed some of the most vulnerable Americans into shelters and the streets. Homelessness shot up by more than 12% this year, reaching 653,104 people.

I think they deserve support much, much more than Illegal Aliens.

But, the Dems/Libs don't care for U.S. CITIZENS - only future voters.

Yeah, he'd have to admit his policies have been a disaster, reinstate the Trump EOs, work with states who are trying to solve the problem rather than suing them, and tell his party he supports  an end to the toxic asylum policy and support legislation fixing it.  It  won't happen though

It will NEVER happen under a Democratic President and Senate or House.

Dems will demand amnesty for illegals, which should be a non-starter.

I hope the GOP will never be bamboozled by unscrupulous Dems again as they were in Reagan's day.

Is there any doubt that the Governors of Texas and Florida pulled off a HUGE political move that forces Democrats to deal with the disastrous policies they overwhelmingly support?

And now these mayors in big blue sanctuaries are crying about it to Biden?

Tough shit.

Or when taxpayers in those sanctuaries realize how stupid they have been, electing idiots.

I think that’s a fair complaint. Abbot could have shown some integrity and directly coordinated with these mayors. If he really believed in the virtue of what he’s doing, he’d be open and honest about it.  Instead, like a criminal, he smuggled migrants into town, under dark of night, dumping them at random street corners. He’s no better than the coyotes that smuggled them in from Mexico.

Greg Abbott pleaded and begged the Biden Administration to do something long ago.

In typical Biden fashion, he was ignored.

I feel nothing for the dumbass Democrats who instituted sanctuaries and are now actually having to deal with what they thought they were safe from.

I say integrity and courage is doing something vs. ignoring the problem.

Perhaps if Biden had done something, Abbott wouldn't be shipping immigrants anywhere.

I guess this means Biden has absolutely no integrity or courage. since he has done zip.

It is shortsighted ignorance to ignore Biden's role in this. Had he been doing what he was supposed to, there wouldn't be buses and planes to sanctuaries.

Abbott and DeSantis didn't do this in a vacuum.

Maybe Abbott is coordinating in the way the Biden example of coordination taught him!

Sorry, but I won't pretend that the problem is Abbott.

Abbott didn't ask for this mess. He asked for help repeatedly and it fell on Biden's deaf ears.

Maybe the squeaky wheels of Democratic mayors and governors begging for federal help will be better received than Abbott's pleas were.

Abbott is doing the ONLY thing that seems to have any chance at getting the attention of Biden. Seems he'll care when Democrats are whining and threatening to not vote for him

I don't know what he has or has not tried as far as communicating with the places he was sending people just as I do not know if the people that must know by now that he is sending them may or may not have tried reaching out to him asking for a heads up.  What I do know is if they spent as much time talking to each other as they do in order to get their sound bite or newspaper articles there would already be a smooth process in place.

Maybe no one really wants a smooth process in place just like they don't seem to want a workable immigration policy in place.  The left and right have made that clear for 50 or so years
