Denver's food bill on feeding migrants skyrockets
By: Shirleen Guerra
While the continued influx of migrants comes at a cost of more than $61 million, resources for feeding those in the shelters are running low, and the city is looking to amend two contracts at the city council meeting on March 20.
In December 2023, the city of Denver agreed to a $100,000 contract to feed incoming migrants with Colorado Hospitality Services.
After a year, that contract was increased to $475,000 in January 2024. Then, the city had to pay another $450,000 in February 2024.
Now, Denver City Council is looking at another $500,000 to pay for food costs through June, raising the total to $1.4 million.
The city is facing the same issue with the other food provider for migrants that was contracted. Michaels of Denver Catering, Inc., started out with a $500,000 contract to feed the incoming migrants in May 2023. That increased to $1 million in October. Now, the city will review another $350,000 that will cover the costs through June.
"Due to the sustained high volume of newcomers, the current purchase order is exhausted and we are seeking to increase it again," the city stated in a memo to the council explaining the reason for skyrocketing costs.
Denver has continued to receive an influx of migrants, with nearly 40,000 arriving in the city over the past year due to its status as a sanctuary city, and the cost is continuing to grow.
Since the beginning of the migrant crisis, the city has served 39,605 migrants and asylum-seekers. Still, it faces a growing deficit as Denver continues to receive newcomers and offers food, shelter, and other services.
The city continues to shelter 1,150 individuals while phasing out some services this week by closing one of five hotel shelters currently in use.
Denver recently received a $3.5 million reimbursement from the state of Colorado and a $1.6 million advancement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, with $12.2 million in potential federal reimbursements currently pending, according to a Mar. 18, 2024 update from the city.
Denver currently faces a nearly $60 million budget deficit, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has said for the city to maintain current services that are provided for migrants, it would cost taxpayers well over $100 million over the next year, as previously reported by The Center Square.

And we are told that illegals are a burden on the citizens.
All at the hands of the Democrats Sanctuary Shithole and open border policies.
They aren't Democrat bastions of stupidity for nothing.
Hope the leftists like paying for all of the illegals their government has let into the country and coddles.
The sad part it, that it's been pointed out many times and they still choose to be ignorant.
That is a great bumper sticker. Choose to be ignorant, vote dem.
I tihnk I've seen that one driving around Raliegh NC.
I have a plaque in the front of my truck that says "YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!" I get my share of looks and comments from that in my small border town. Some negative by obviously out of town clueless snowbirds the positive ones by the locals.
Colorado chose be a sanctuary state. This is the cost of such progressive leftist liberal folly. We as a country should be more concerned about taking care of our own citizens and legal residents first!
And with that they should get the amount of $0 in taxpayer money from anywhere in the country.
Nobody ever claimed that they knew what they were doing or even remotely thought the whole thing through.
We should. But the idiots don't see the problems they are causing and think throwing money at it will make it go away.
This morning the New York Times has a piece declaring that we need to double our population.
On the one hand overpopulation is a bad thing but here in the US which is fully developed it is a good thing. / S
What resources are they planning on using to take care of that doubling of population- assuming most of the added population to achieve their goal will be under skilled illegal immigrants?
The Democrats are restricting what resources can be drilled for and mined; and what types of energy we can use. Green energy will not support a doubling of the US population. Especially since most of it will be purchased from China.
Green energy can't support the CURRENT US population.
That's what happens when you do all your "research" from the basement with no real idea of what's going on.
Costs a lot to feed feral cats
And they just keep coming.
I'm sure the high progressives in Denver are hoping the migrants will do the work they are to lazy to do.
Teacher layoffs will help close the budget gap.
598 full-time positions were cut at the beginning of the 2022-2023 academic year. This school year saw 374 full-time positions reduced before the start of class. DPS just announced that 461 positions are being cut next year.
1433 cut over 3 years represents around 23% of their teacher workforce.
They have to keep the population stupid so they won't catch on to what they are doing.
Those illegals must not have kids to teach.
They're bringing kids across the border. Now whether or not these kids are actually theirs is in question.
If Joe wins in November expect the fed to help sanctuary cities to foot the bill. Everyone will have to pay their "fair share". Spending other peoples money is what dems do best.
These shitholes are already begging for assistance.
And after the election if Joe wins he will say it is a mandate to help give illegals anything they want.
Why should Joe wait till then? He's already doing it now!
It will be a massive bailout and fortunes will be made by friends and family member of democrats who will administer the funds.
Of course. We need bigger government to distribute wealth and they should be well compensated for spending other peoples money.
Meanwhile, the Denver homeless have been forgotten
The same has happened in every other Sanctuary Shithole.
