Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be trailing among independent women voters since announcing her run for the presidency, per a recent national poll.

Harris has made big waves among the Democratic Party since being endorsed by President Joe Biden to take his place at the top of the party's ticket this November. As of Monday, her campaign said that she has secured enough support from delegates to be her party's presumptive nominee, and the last 48 hours have brought in a record number of donations for Democrats.

According to a poll conducted by NPR, PBS News and Marist, however, Harris is likely in for a neck-and-neck battle against former President Donald Trump, who formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination last week. The poll released on Tuesday found that Harris trailed Trump by 1 percentage point (45 percent to 46 percent, respectively) across nationally registered voters. In such a close contest, either candidate will have to rely on key demographics—such as independent women voters—to push them to victory in November.

Trump, according to the Marist poll, surpasses Harris in this crucial category. Forty-six percent of independent voters surveyed this week said that they would pick the former president in a hypothetical matchup between him and Harris, compared to 32 percent of independents who said they would back the vice president. Breaking down even further, Harris only gained the support of 29 percent of independent women, compared to the 43 percent that said they would back Trump if the election was held today. The poll was conducted on July 22 and includes the response from 1,117 registered voters nationwide.

The results are a significant step back from how Biden, who dropped out of the 2024 election on Sunday, was faring among independent women. In an NPR/PBS/Marist poll conducted between July 9 and 10, 48 percent of independent women said that they would back the president if the election was held today. That result followed Biden's rocky first debate performance on June 27, which ignited concerns among Democrats about the president's ability to defeat Trump in November.

Newsweek sent an email to Marist Poll for comment on Tuesday.

Polling prior to Biden dropping out of the race showed that Harris may have a tough time winning over independent and moderate voters. According to the compiling of polling data conducted by NBC News in January, April and July, Harris has a lower net score than Biden among independents—while Biden's net rating was negative favorability review by 25 percentage points between the three months reviewed, Harris had a net negative of 29 points among independents.

NPR pointed out, however, that the most recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll found that a growing number of independents may be up for grabs following Biden's exit. Nearly 1 in 5 independents indicated in the survey this week that they are undecided when given Harris and Trump on the ballot. Earlier this month, when voters were asked to choose between Biden and Trump, only 4 percent of independents indicated they were undecided.

Harris hosted her first rally as the presumptive Democratic nominee in Wisconsin on Tuesday, a pivotal swing state that Biden flipped in 2020 against Trump. Much of her campaign messaging has focused on protecting women's rights and access to abortion, a winning issue for Democrats since the overturn of Roe v. Wade that could help the vice president's popularity among suburban and independent women voters before November.

Harris told her supporters in Milwaukee on Tuesday, "We who believe in reproductive freedom will stop Donald Trump's extreme abortion bans because we trust women to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do."

"And when Congress passes a law to restore reproductive freedoms as president of the United States, I will sign it into law," Harris added while the crowd cheered.

The key to Harris's success, Sleep with the boss while his wife is home faithfully taking care of the kids, that should go over well with suburban housewives.

Gee less than a week ago, according to Republican pundits, Trump was on cruise control. Now it's neck and neck?  That seems like a swift downfall for Trump.

This election is about one thing only, Trump's massive unfitness to hold public office. If Harris and the Democrats PROSECUTE this case properly we will be rid of Trump on Nov 5th.

In your dreams, this election is also about the democrats lying and duplicity, they have lied to us for months about Joes fitness to serve, they have lied about their ability to fix the border issue's, they held a sham primary knowing full well that Biden didn't have the mental capacity to continue or they are fucking idiots for not knowing it have been obvious for months to non-partisans that Joe is unfit.

No, this election is about the direction of the country for the next 4 years. Do we want to continue down the same path as the last 8? Of Democrats weaponizing government against their political opponents. Of wide open borders with millions of illegals flooding in sucking up resources intended for US citizens. Of a President that will ignore Supreme Court rulings; and will try to alter the way the size of the Supreme Court, and the way it operates. Of a President that will continue the war on our energy resources and increase prices for US everyone. Of continuing to throw money and resources away in the sink hole that is Ukraine.

Democrats can try to run this election like one of their kangaroo courts; but they are not the sole arbitrators- and if they try they will rightfully be removed.

There will be all kinds of rumors.

There are two stories here.

The first is the ineptness of the Secret Service Director and her lie about not denying the Trump campaign's requests for more protection.

The other is the tight grip the FBI has on the details.

Until 1970 the majority of States did not hold presidential primaries, is it your thesis that democracy did not exist in the US until then?

Secret voting arrived in 1888 and the first state around the turn of the twentieth century. Both reforms were meant to reduce the power of Party bosses who traded convention delegate floor votes for power, patronage, or cash.

is it your thesis that democracy did not exist in the US until then?

Is it your thesis that the candidate selection by party bosses instead of citizen voters makes for democracy?

I hate to have to inform you of this, but this is about as good as it's going to get for Kamala, once her record as a Senator comes under intense scrutiny. Most voters have no interest in identity politics, of which she is the worst example imaginable. Being a woman of color won't take her very far.

Harris and Biden always polled very similarly. She’s still losing.  The democrats believe that she can add net voters to that total, while no one thought Biden could.  That’s why they ditched him.

It is the expected bump Harris would get for not being a doddering old man.

As much as the media attempts to prop her up it will not last.

The Trump campaign only needs to roll out her statements from the 2019 DNC debates when she ran in the far left lane.

New one from CNN just came out.

Trump holds 49% support among registered voters nationwide to Harris’ 46%, a finding within the poll’s margin of sampling error. That’s a closer contest than earlier CNN polling this year had found on the matchup between Biden and Trump.

Yes and there is often a spike the week following the convention too, but not always. Trump got a small spike after the shooting, but nothing after the RNC. I'll be interested to see where Harris falls by mid Sep. I mean nothing about this is normal anymore, but up until now we've been expecting a nailbiter race so I have no idea where this will go now. Filtering out all the partisan noise I don't think anyone else does either.
