US Border Patrol and Mexican cartel members trade gunfire at southern border: report
US Border Patrol agents and suspected Mexican cartel members traded gunfire near the southern border Monday as a group of migrants tried to enter the US illegally, according to a report.

Suspected Mexican cartel members were caught on video opening fire on US Border Patrol agents near the southern border Monday - as a group of migrants reportedly tried to enter the US illegally, authorities said.

The ordeal unfolded at about 1:30 p.m. near Fronton, Texas, Customs and Border Protection said in a statement without revealing more details.

The apparent cartel members had started firing as the group of migrants were trying to cross the Rio Grande, Fox News reported, citing law enforcement sources.

Border patrol agents quickly returned fire, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

"DPS responded to assist the US Border Patrol after agents received gunfire from cartel members in Mexico while patrolling in Fronton," Lt. Chris Olivarez posted on X alongside a slew of videos showing the heavily armed gunman.

"DPS drone operators captured the gunmen fleeing Mexico due to military presence and seeking refuge on an island between the US and Mexico," he added.

The footage showed at least four gun-toting men walking along the river bank and trying to seek cover in the shrubs as the drone tracked them.

Several were repeatedly caught aiming their weapons directly at the drone, the clips show.

"The State of Texas will continue to monitor the area closely and use every resource available to prevent transnational threats to our law enforcement partners and the homeland," Olivarez said.

The scene where the shooting took place remained active with the Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility, DHS Office of Inspector General, the FBI and Texas Department of Public Safety all involved in the probe, CPB said late Monday.

No injuries were reported, according to authorities.

Meanwhile, the migrants who were trying to cross at the time of the ordeal reportedly didn't make it into the US.

The shooting comes as President Trump makes cracking down on illegal immigration and fortifying the southern border an early hallmark of his second term in the Oval Office.

US officials said last week the Pentagon would start shipping up to 1,500 active duty troops to the Mexican border to join about 2,200 US National Guard and Reserve personnel already in place.

Trump was also considering sending up to 10,000 troops to the border as part of the country's effort to seal the borders, the Washington Post reported last week.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it arrested 1,179 people and lodged 853 immigration detainers Monday - a day after it carried out 956 arrests and issued 554 detainers.

An observation.

Back when running during the election , the situation at the southern border was called an "invasion".

What does every president have that COULD be used in such a situation? Keep in mind , an invasion can be seen as an act of war. and not just countries can initiate acts of war .

Trump has pretty much declared the situation on the southern border is an invasion .

Back in the 70s , Congress passed an act , against a presidential veto that has been in every presidents back pocket since . and congress doesnt have much it can do if its used .

Presidential war powers act , food for thought with the way things are developing and shaping up.

According to Chief Bovino, the attack happened at approximately 11:00 a.m. on January 22 in the Jacumba Mountains Wilderness area, specifically near the Moon Valley Trailhead.

“There was a group of 10-12 hikers in that area, and suspected cartel terrorists opened fire indiscriminately at that entire group of 10-12 hikers, injuring one,” said Chief Bovino.

The majority of the hikers were American citizens, with one member of the group identified as a Canadian visitor, he said.

An initial wave of 1,600 troops was deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border by Monday following a mobilization that started last week.

The border mission has become the Defense Department's top priority as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also entered the Pentagon for the first time Monday after being confirmed by an  unusually close Senate vote late Friday . And the 1,600 may likely be just the beginning as President Donald Trump eyes a historic crackdown on immigration.

If you think the wall stopped people from going over, under, or through, you need to study history a bit more.  You don't think the hundreds of armed soldiers made a difference?  You don't think that North Korea would have just built a wall if that was all it took to stop crossings?

A 10-foot wall across the entire southern border would make it quite easy to police. No matter how determined someone was to get over it, border patrol would have enough time to drive over to where someone was attempting to get over it.

Fortunately, the word is out, and we don't have swarms of people thinking they can simply walk in any longer.

Really?  That wall would not only block them from seeing our side, but it would block us from seeing their side.

No matter how determined someone was to get over it, border patrol would have enough time to drive over to where someone was attempting to get over it.

In your mind are you picturing a border patrol agent every 20 feet or so walking back and forth ON TOP OF the wall?

How does the wall prevent people from going through it or under it, or flying over it???

Fortunately, the word is out, and we don't have swarms of people thinking they can simply walk in any longer.

Biden did nothing to stop a heavy flow of illegals for 4 years.

Trump stated his plan for mass deportation and the illegal per day number dropped from several thousand to about 500 in one day. And that was the day after his announcement and EO signing.

The thank you belongs to President Trump.

Neither did Trump or congress, or any previous POTUS or congress.  Biden did act when congress failed to pass the bipartisan immigration bill (thanks Trump for blocking the bill).

either did Trump or congress, or any previous POTUS or congress.

What a dishonest argument.  After inviting illegals to enter the country during his campaign Biden immediately signed EOs to repeal Trump's actions to help secure the border. He pulled out of international agreements that Trump signed. If Trump did nothing, there would have been no EOs to repeal or agreements to withdraw from.

do these sort of flagrantly dishonest claims work on anyone?

Neither did Trump

Trump made one hell of an attempt with building a wall, but was met with ass wipe resistance from the left in Congress. They wanted then, and now, the unabated flow of illegals so they can one day keep power permanent.

" Citation, or am I just supposed to take your word for it?"

Sorry, I forgot your google is broken

Only 582 crossed into the U.S. six days after Trump was inaugurated: sources | Fox News

From the article

Less than 600 people crossed illegally into the U.S. from Mexico on Sunday – a stunningly low number since  President Donald Trump  took office. For comparison, the daily number of border encounters during the final days of the Biden White House teetered between 1,200 to 1,400 per day.

" Biden did act when congress failed to pass the bipartisan immigration bill ( thanks Trump for blocking the bill )."

If he did something, he finally did after his handlers realized he was getting his ass handed to him in the election and they HAD to do something. If polls showed Biden leading (they never did), he would have done nothing.

BTW....you never answered any of the previous questions I had asked of you, to wit...

How many illegals have you taken into your home to help your fellow taxpayers reduce the cost of paying for them?'

Why do you get so emotional over these illegals? Do you have a personal interest in the subject?

I think the Republicans need to legislate an immigration reform law. That law needs certain provisions:

In order of priority:

1) Those migrants who have committed crimes in the US must be deported. (Those officials who try to obstruct must be prosecuted for treason.)

2) Those who have had their asylum hearing and have been denied asylum must be the second group to be deported.

3) Those who have entered illegally or accepted aid in the past 5 years are the third group that must be deported.

4) Those who have been here prior to the Biden years and committed no crimes may stay and may be permitted to have a green card only. Nobody who enters illegally should ever be allowed citizenship.

The "issue" I have with the Dreamers and little kiddies is that - "most" of them claim that they were BABIES when their Illegal Alien parent/s brought them to the States.

So, you're drug across the border at the tender age of 2 and, at 18, you apply for "Dreamer/Kiddy" status and just can't understand why agencies frown on you and deny your application - just because you had 16 - 20 years to complete an application for Residency and you were to friggin' stupid/lazy to fill out the two page document.

Then, due to your laziness, you call the U.S. government "RACIST"?????

Perfectly agree. There are some shady ass hats who will claim they came here as babies but really crossed the border 2 weeks before.

Problem the Trump admin will have to work out is which of these are telling the truth and which are not. Not sure how to do that but if the Biden admin had kept track, then it may have been much easier,

The other problem is that I'm not sure minors can complete the paperwork for becoming dreamers. No way their parents would do it because they would most certainly had gotten booted out.....well, not by the Obama or Biden admins.

There will probably be some sort of compromise where all sides will be satisfied.

Another IMHO comment - Many of the kids/children were SENT here by their parents, with the kids being 4 - 16 years old - BY THEMSELVES.  No parental guidance/support/protection and only a note telling someone/U.S. CBP to "call this number" so the kids can hook up with a supposed relative/whomever.

Those parents need jail time in a very big way.  Can you imagine what the minds of such young folks are dredging up over their month or longer trip???

Why do we want them deported instead of punished here?  Do we really trust the Mexicans to prosecute cartel members?

Those who have had their asylum hearing and have been denied asylum must be the second group to be deported.

Fair.

Those who have entered illegally or accepted aid in the past 5 years are the third group that must be deported.

Why 5 years?

Those who have been here prior to the Biden years and committed no crimes may stay and may be permitted to have a green card only. Nobody who enters illegally should ever be allowed citizenship.

Fair enough.

I'm going to suggest a few more

Remove the quotas for EB2 visas.  So you don't have to look it up:

EB-2  visas are available to professionals holding an advanced degree or foreign equivalent; or who can prove at least ten years experience in a field; or those whose employment is in the national interest of the U.S. For all but the third category of eligibility, labor certification must be obtained. Family of  EB-2 visa  holders may apply for admission to the U.S. through E21 or E22 forms, if that person has an approved  I-140 (green card)  form.

Increase the quota for EB1 and EB3 visas to 250,000/yr each.  (I would be open to bigger increases than that)

EB-1  covers those with “extraordinary ability” such as business professionals, academics and researchers, scientists, the arts, or athletics. This type of visa does not require labor certification. Family of EB-1 visa holders may apply for admission to the U.S. on E-14 or E-15 immigrant status, respectively, if that person has an approved  I-140 (green card)  form.
EB-3  visas are available to those holding a bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, as well as skilled and unskilled laborers who have a non-temporary offer of employment from a U.S. employer. For each eligibility category within EB-3, labor certification must be obtained. Family of EB-3 visa holders may apply for admission to the U.S. through specific spouse or child forms listed  here , if that person has an approved  I-140 (green card)  form.

The idea being that if we intend to maintain our place as the world's best economy, we need to be aggressive as we attract talented, capable, hard working people from around the world to make up for the Americans we failed to educate properly and imbued with a sense of entitlement.

Previously, hikers were able to apply in advance for a permit that would allow them to hike across the border on the trail, but the CBSA said Monday that the rules have changed.

"Hikers from the U.S. without a permit who wish to complete the Canadian portion of the trail will from now on be required to first enter Canada via a designated port of entry," the CBSA said in a release, noting that the change brings it into alignment with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which does not allow travellers to enter the U.S. from Canada on the trail.
