Bronx residents are reportedly protesting a proposed 2,200-bed male-only migrant shelter. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has supported the influx of asylum seekers, while former acting ICE Director Tom Homan has accused her of obstructing federal enforcement efforts. Protests have featured signs stating "The Bronx Says NO." The shelter is part of New York City's plan to consolidate its migrant housing system, which includes closing 46 smaller sites and reducing total bed count by about 10,000.
Christopher Reid, chairman of the New York Young Republican Club's Bronx Caucus, has criticized Ocasio-Cortez for not engaging with her constituents. He claims frustrations over the shelter and immigration policies are shifting political support in the Bronx, where President Donald Trump saw a 22% increase in backing during the 2024 election compared to 2020.
Reid said, "We can't help anybody else until we help ourselves first. I think that's a major message that AOC and these far-left radicals need to hear."
Homan expressed concern over a webinar hosted by Ocasio-Cortez's office, which aimed to inform migrants of their rights when interacting with ICE. He reached out to the Justice Department to clarify whether her actions impede law enforcement.
Homan said, "Maybe AOC is going to be in trouble now," adding, "Impediment is impediment, in my opinion."
Homan stated, "Let's pray that she is not 'educating' the next murderer of a young college nursing student on how to evade arrest by ICE."
Ocasio-Cortez noted her commitment to educating the public about their rights and ensuring compliance with the law. She stated, "I'm glad Mr. Homan is checking with the Department of Justice to familiarize himself with the limits of his agency's authority in entering the homes of everyday Americans without a warrant."
Ocasio-Cortez concluded, "Since Mr. Homan seems to be vaguely familiar with U.S. immigration law, we also remind him that according to Congressional statute, becoming undocumented in the United States is a civil offense and not a criminal one."

AOC, suggest you get out more and listen.....................
I see Reid has pulled out the "charity begins at home" nonsense perpetrated by the D.J. Trump Foundation.
Well.....whether she's an actual idiot or just plays one on TV ... she's in congress and he's nowhere close.
This is awesome, put all the feral cats in one place and then they will we easier to find and evict.
That’s an odd criticism. Asylum seeking is legal.
Is that true? Is she being investigated for that? Charged with a crime?
Imagine thinking that advising someone of their rights under the law is somehow criminal.
Well, remember the first Principle of Toady-ness to Trump and his Supporters: All people are created equal, but some people are more Equal than others.
