DALLAS - For millions of Americans who used online tax services, their second stimulus payment may have been sent to the wrong bank account.

Tax preparation company Jackson Hewitt said the Internal Revenue Service sent payments to an estimated 13+ million banks accounts that are no longer open or valid.

These bank accounts were set up by tax companies, like Jackson Hewitt, H&R Block, and TurboTax, as temporary accounts used to deposit tax refunds for their customers who opt to have tax preparation fees taken out of their refund.

The accounts are usually closed after the remaining refund money to pass along to the client.

The problem is, the IRS still has these accounts in its records, so that's where the federal government sent millions of stimulus payments.

Tax firms said they are doing everything they can but point out this is the IRS' mistake.

Haven't Received 2nd Stimulus Check? Here Are 4 Reasons Why

In a statement, a spokesperson for TurboTax said, "Unfortunately, because of an IRS error, millions of payments were sent to the wrong accounts and some may not have received their stimulus payment. We have been working tirelessly on a solution with the Treasury and the IRS. As a result, our expectation now is that within days the error will be corrected and stimulus payments will begin being deposited into the correct bank accounts for affected TurboTax customers."

H&R Block said it "processed all stimulus payments to millions of our customers, whether via direct deposit to a bank account, check, or onto our Emerald Prepaid Mastercard."

However, for many Americans who used online tax services, it may be too late to receive an advance $600 stimulus payment.

On the Jackson Hewitt website, the company said, "Impacted banks are required to send the affected payments back to the U.S. Treasury… Jackson Hewitt and its tax preparers have not and will not receive funds from the IRS to distribute to taxpayers."

People who do not receive their stimulus payment by the January 15 deadline will have to wait to claim their stimulus check as a tax credit when they file their 2020 taxes.

To find out if you've been impacted by this IRS error, click on the IRS' Get My Payment tool to view the status of your stimulus check.

The status will show the last four digits of the bank account number the payment was sent to.

My daughter and me made the mistake of ordering things from Wish. Well that was a big mistake. Ordered them at the beginning of December and still not here yet! I guess that is consequence of ordering something sent from China and strapped to the back of a slow moving sea turtle. My daughter did the actual ordering but neglected to tell me where they were coming from as I would have said not only no, but H#*l No!

On the drive back from NV we stopped at Meteor Crater and Mrs SP was very interested in meteor jewelry.

Since the anniversary and Xmas were approaching I ordered a ring online from Etsy.  Tracking never worked but I quickly realized it was coming from INDIA !  S L O W L Y !

So I ordered from an Navajo artist in Show Low AZ  plus earrings assuming...they would be from Meteor Crater...

Well they saved my butt, but the Meteor ring from India was actually from a location in Spain ( showed up for Xmas )

and the meteorites from Show Low AZ, I assumed were from AZ actually came from Argentina.......

No matter she was pleased as punch.

Ahhh...the old..."It's in the mail" game, eh? jrSmiley_18_smiley_image.gif

Haven't found mine yet. I got my 1st one in my checking acct. The one I have my tax refunds sent to, so hopefully the same will happen this time. But, I got no notice that it has been deposited. I just found out when I checked to see if a check I wrote cleared yet and there it was.  jrSmiley_74_smiley_image.gif

I am old school and prefer to have a check in hand vs direct deposit whenever possible.

I did the 'check in hand' thing with the IRS for several years, and there were times it never showed up and had to be replaced, which took even longer for them to send. Then there were the times they got mis-delivered, and again had to be tracked down, which took some time, and again, had to be replaced. So I bit the bullet and went for direct deposit, and I have never had any problems. I also have my SS and pension benefits direct deposited, which gives me quicker access to my money.

This has been the way I have done it for many years, and I would not go back to doing the 'check in hand' method if at all possible. It just works better for me. But, I know some of my Friends who prefer the 'check in hand' method.

So.....whatever floats yer canoe. jrSmiley_13_smiley_image.gif

I didn't get a reception either of my kids. My daughter got married on the deck with a JP and we went to breakfast after and my son got married the same weekend at one of the Chapels at Lackland AFB.

I gave him $500 to pay for a NJ speeding ticket ( they don't take checks or CC )

I come home and all three are playing with new i phones.

He got out of the ticket so he celebrated but included his sisters, so how could I get too mad?

You can't. He shared and that's a good thing.

NJ must be like Maryland. My dad spent time in a county lockup in Maryland because he was speeding and didn't have the cash to pay the ticket. They do that to out of staters

When we still lived in PA and the oldest was in NC

they traveled US81 quite a bit and the same local sheriff got my son & daughter

twice each for being 5 mph over the limit, and he remember their names and the cars they were driving last time.

Martinsburg WV

The boy had to get his own policy after that.

I got clipped in some BFE texas town last september. a rental car with washington plates. 2 local yokel cops pull me over out of a crowd of vehicles just outside of town claiming I was doing 86 in a 75. I had the cruise control set at 77 and had just hit resume. 1st ticket in 6 years, $236. called 10 days later for a court date and was complaining about the tourist speedtrap town, my word versus 2 cops, and knowing what was up to the lady on the other end of the phone. she was the justice of the peace. oops. ... and I'm the guy that everybody passes on the highway.

My paper check was mailed this last Wednesday. I expect to receive it by Monday, though since mail is still sometimes slow these days it could be slightly longer. I just paid over $700 in unforeseen car repairs yesterday. More are needed so I'll be putting this in savings for that.
