Rep. Madison Cawthorn tried to board a plane while carrying a gun in February, according to newly obtained records.

The incident came to light after FireMadison.com, a campaign looking to unseat the Republican congressman, obtained audio recordings and records of the incident from Asheville Regional Airport Authority.

Records revealed that Cawthorn was attempting to board a plane in Asheville, North Carolina, on February 15 when airport security found an unloaded Glock 9mm handgun and a loaded magazine in his carry-on.

After finding the gun, airport police questioned Cawthorn, secured the gun, and wrote a report. Cawthorn was not charged with a crime or fined.

Cawthorn was permitted to pick up the gun on February 22 after returning from his trip.

David B. Wheeler, President of FireMadison.com, said in a statement that the incident was "a serious violation of the law" and questioned why Cawthorn had not been arrested or fined.

"If you or I brought a loaded gun to the airport, we would be arrested, fined $10,000, and end up in front of a judge
to answer for our illegal activity," he said.

Typically having a loaded firearm or an unloaded firearm with accessible ammunition at an airport checkpoint or on a plane carries a fine between $3,000 and $10,000 and a criminal referral.

TSA spokesperson Mark Howell told the Citizen Times that in almost all cases, those found to be improperly transporting guns face federal civil fines, and an elected official should not be excluded from the potential punishment.

He told the paper that Cawthorn's case from February was "still pending" and declined to comment on it.

Cawthorn spokesperson Micah Bock said the congressman had "erroneously" stowed the firearm in his carry-on instead of his checked bag.

"The firearm was secured and unchambered. Rep. Cawthorn endeavors to always follow TSA guidelines and quickly rectified this situation before boarding his flight," Bock said.

The 25-year-old congressman from North Carolina has gained a reputation for making controversial statements, including that Dr. Fauci should be prosecuted and that vaccine efforts could result in people's guns and bibles being confiscated.

He got off scot-free, I doubt that would happen if you or I forgot and had a handgun with a loaded clip in our carry-on.

This guy is a complete nutjob.

Now I read he was in a fight with another republican on the floor of congress, and yelled at his staffers in their office.

He is a psycho that should have never been near any halls of congress.

Why people vote for idiots that can yell and scream yet have zero ideas on moving the country forward I will never know.

In the end he supposedly sent the other congressman a note saying they need to be allies because of a common enemy.

That is the problem with some idiots. They think anyone not towing their line is an enemy.

He has lied about the car accident and the circumstances around it.

He lied about it ruining his chance to attend the Naval Academy, Annapolis - He was denied by the Naval Academy before the accident occurred.

He's been very vocally lying  about election fraud only recently admitting he has zero evidence.

No shit.  I couldn't even board a plane with a 4-oz bottle of Mexican vanilla extract (great stuff).  Got pulled out of the security line because I didn't know that the allowed size for liquids had changed.  And he tries to bring a Glock?

When I worked airport gates in AK, one night I had to work the red eye to HI.  There was this one couple and the wife was a lovely woman, but her husband who was a little tipsy made a joke about a bomb on board.  Within one minute, he was cuffed and hauled away.  I felt sorry for the wife and asked her what she was going to do.  She told me screw him and said that she had the tickets.  She cashed his in and went to HI without him.  I smiled all the rest of my shift.

Ditto, had to throw away several small Swiss Army like instruments over the years

and the ex almost made us miss a flight because they could

see a 2 inch knife in the xray but could not find it in the handbag.

I ripped out the lining to find that one

and in the trash it went.

They don't even have the decency to pretend they recycle them.

I always thought that most go home with TSA employees and end up in garage sales.

I traveled with a group to Scotland, and two of us were randomly chosen to have an enhanced check of our carry-ons.  I was fine, but the other guy had contact lens solution in a slightly larger size than allowed.  They dumped it out.  That stuff is expensive.

I don't know if LAX still does this, but they used to hold sales of the massive amounts of confiscated items that were never reclaimed by the owners.  A friend of mine owned a knife shop and got a lot of great merchandise one time.

I told  a TSA agent once that he should talk to the kiosk owner closest to the entry point.

Since I was allowed to take the offending item all the way back to my parked car

why shouldn't one of you be selling padded envelopes with postage for $ 10.00

so we poor losers could mail our nail clippers or Swiss Army knives to our homes

like they do in 3rd world countries?

He looked at the kiosk a little too long before throwing away my BSA knife.....

but that seed was planted.

Cawthorn is a dishonest young who got elected because of his wheelchair and the dishonesty surrounding that wheelchair.  Actually the most dishonest thing about Cawthorn is the voters that put him in the congress.

One more thing. Does he need the weapon because of his dishonesty or is his weapon merely a symbol of his dishonesty?
