'We're just waiting for him to die': Former GOP lawmaker admits party has no plan to derail Trump in 2024 - Raw Story - Celebrating 18 Years of Independent Journalism

... that would be an interesting DC funeral procession down Pennsylvania Avenue.
In his column for the Bulwark, former Republican National Committee spokesperson Tim Miller scorched the GOP for doing nothing to shed themselves of former President Donald Trump and instead just "humoring" him with the hope that he will go away.
As Miller notes, immediately after Trump lost the 2020 presidential election and ramped up his efforts to prove the election was stolen from him, an anonymous senior Republican official told the Washington Post, "What is the downside for humoring him for this little bit of time? No one seriously thinks the results will change," before adding, "He went golfing this weekend. It's not like he's plotting how to prevent Joe Biden from taking power on Jan. 20. He's tweeting about filing some lawsuits, those lawsuits will fail, then he'll tweet some more about how the election was stolen, and then he'll leave."
As Miller wryly noted, that prediction didn't age well as almost two months later Trump's election fraud claims culminated in a riot at the Capitol following a "Stop the Steal" rally on the national mall.
According to the columnist, Republicans are still dithering when it comes to shoving Trump out into the wilderness, in part because they need his fundraising prowess and ability to get out the vote in some races.
According to Miller, "in present-day Republican politics, that anonymous 'what's the downside for humoring him' moron actually won the day. And not just that day, but today. Because despite how brutally and blatantly their strategy in managing Trump's psychopathy failed, Senior Republican Officials (SROs) are still employing it."
"You see, back in November 2020, at least the SROs thought that there was an expiration date on their cowardice. They figured that, come January 20, 2021, Trump would be gone and they would no longer have to humor him. Today the strategy has been modified only in the removal of an expected end date," he wrote before noting a comment made by a former Republican lawmaker in Mark Leibovich's new book, "Thank You for Your Servitude."
As Leibovitch wrote, "A former Republican congressman told me recently that the party's only real plan for dealing with Trump in 2024 involved a darkly divine intervention. 'We're just waiting for him to die,' he said."
To which Miller added, "Instead they will soldier on. Playing the same big game of pretend with our democracy in the balance. After all, the downside for humoring him for just a little more time is likely to be felt by other people. And the upside of humoring? That accrues directly to the Republicans who want power," before darkly predicting, "But don't worry. Eventually they'll be able to tell the truth. Probably. As long as he's the one who croaks first."

I'm waiting and also hoping it's sooner rather than later
fast food diet, unhealthy lifestyle, old age, continuous stress... I like the odds...
his kids will be dragging his baggage around long after his corpse stops stinking. too bad.
With one exception, they deserve it.
which one? the marla spawn or the melania spawn?
That does seem to be the plan. If they have not detached from Trump by now (should have been done on Jan 20, 2021) they are not likely to do so.
The likely 'detachment' will be the result of some other candidate overshadowing Trump in the primaries (or if Trump does not run).
it's a reluctant, and very recent, tacit admission of the obvious given the current optics involved. the trick will be doing it without alienating the supporters of the nutjobs that won as big lie candidates.
Quite a trick to pull off.
meh, not impossible with that more than receptive audience.
They can't detach from him. Trump controls a large number of white nationalists, ammosexuals, and self victiminzers, who are also GOP voters. If they detach from Trump all these deplorable voters go with him.
Who are these less-than-desirable voters going to vote for? They are not likely to vote D. So they will either not vote out of protest (childish) or they will migrate to another R.
On the flipside, the GoP continues to degrade itself every day it supports Trump.
I say that the GoP should be controlled by those who refuse to sell their souls for a lying sack of shit who attempted to steal a US election, among many other things. They should detach from Trump and work to restore the GoP to a party that at least has integrity. The Liz Cheney's of the party should be in control, not the Josh Hawley's.
there's a lot of GOP psychological traits about to collide head on in the next 100 days.
There are Obama voters that voted for Trump and Independents, like suburban mom's. Biden got their vote in 2020 which I why Trump lost.
Not sure what point you are trying to make here. How did you explain what the Trump supporters will do, in terms of voting, if Trump is detached from the GoP?
Will they vote D? Explain why.
Will they not vote? All of them will just sit on their thumbs?
Will they find another R to vote for?
please stay on topic.
The same people they used to vote for before Trump. Some will vote for whoever has an (R) next to their name, but a lot will just not vote, just as you pointed out. But the GOP is having all sorts of problems winning popular votes, they cannot afford to lose the "deplorable" ones.
GOP voters are the epitome of people voting against their own interests.
lemmings in search of a cliff...
they could read the Cliff notes , on the way down.....
Trump lost because he was a HORRIBLE president that literally lied on average 8 times a day.
But I hear his health care plan is coming out in two weeks.
So would you agree that the GoP should not be concerned with alienating Trump supporters and should instead focusing on rebuilding the party and restoring (to the degree possible) its integrity?
I agree that they "should". But I do not believe they "will".
The GOP is after one thing, power, and they do not have the patience to play that type of long game anymore. If the GOP rebuilds and restores its integrity, it will lose votes and most elections until it overcomes the authoritarian reputation it gained after Trump. It will be generations before any democrat would think of voting for them, and in the mean time they will lose over 1/3 of current republican voters.
SCOTUS knee-capped them, and J6 will finish them off, right before the midterms.
Which is why the GOP leaders are likely hoping he has a massive heart attack and dies so they can turn him into a martyr for the right so they don't lose his loyal mindless gullible sycophants while at the same time not having to put up with his toxic personality, extreme narcissism and unhinged behavior. If I had a nickel for every time a republican legislator had to compromise their conscience to keep the Trump Troll and his sycophants happy I'd have 'all' the nickels.
look for my van. I'll be selling eggs and tomatoes at $19.99 per dozen. please aim only for the casket.
The day cannot arrive soon enough
there has to be a wagering line on the odds somewhere...
Make sure the eggs and the tomatoes are rotten. No sense in wasting good produce on that thing
The Republicans had a chance to get rid of him but McConnel passed on it and now they are stuck, but what can you expect from those that hold their positions higher than our country.
the unrelenting quest for greed and power.
Jesus, trump looks like 280 pounds of assholes stuffed in a 200 pound sack.
Kind of a gamble considering most of them are donald's age or older...
definitely a distressing side effect of medicare.
