R OSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to crush an armed mutiny after the private army of mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin seized control of a southern city as part of an attempt to oust the military leadership.

In Russia's first armed insurrection since the Chechen wars decades ago, heavily armed fighters from Prigozhin's Wagner militia were in control of the streets of Rostov-on-Don, a city of more than a million people close to the border with Ukraine.

Unbelievable, are we seeing history being made?

How will the Russian army and their National Guard respond?

What is Putin's next move?

The concern is that Prigozhin, who heads the "Wagner Group" and is leading this rebellion, is just as bad, if not worse, than Putin.

anything is possible. putin can't fight a war on 2 fronts and he certainly can't afford to piss off the mercenaries. it was a really smart move on lukasheno's part to either protect himself or to trap the animal for putin.

Well, I am sure that he made contingency plans for this scenario.

But it makes one wonder what tipped the balance in the mercenaries minds to make them change.

There has been a battle between Wagner and the Russian military for months. The final straw was the demand by Russian that Wanger put all it's troops under Russian command, they refused and this is the result.

A report a few minutes ago stated that Russian helicopter fired on Wagner troops on their way to Moscow.

Rumor has it Wagner was planning it for months and had been building up resources at the border for the move. What we need to know next is how many of those mercs are going to Belarus with Prigozhin and how many are taking Russian military contracts? As long as Prigozhin breaths he's dangerous.

That will be critical to both sides and don't forget that Wagner has thousands of troops in Africa and Syria. Also, the separate minority regions of Russia who have been chaffing at the troops lose from their area while the ''pure Russians'' mostly avoid the fighting. Also, the Central Asian states looking to choose sides soon, IMO.

I'm sure that he is but remember that China gets millions of barrels of discounted oil from Russia. I don't think that Xi wants to see that stop. On the other hand, Russia has become dependent on China for their trade and buying of oil. Actually, the Central Asia states are more aligned with China than with Russia so we may see some move in those countries.

The latest reports are bizarre. Wagner has called its troops back from taking Moscow to stop bloodshed but has increased its hold on Rostov on Don and some of the citizens are supplying the Wagner troops with food and water.

I need another box of popcorn.

Putin flew to St Petersburg. In the meantime Lukashenko mediated a deal between Prigozhin and Putin for Wagner troops to turn and go to Belarus instead. Something kind of fishy there. Lukashenko is as crooked and tyrannical as Putin is as well as being good buds with Vicious Vlad. In my mind, what is to keep Lukashenko from handing over Prigozhin and his band of cutthroat mercenaries right over to Russia to score points with Putin? Something does not add up here.

Prigozhin is in exile. The Wagner Group is done. Russia, and thus Putin are weaker.

“I honestly think that Wagner probably did more damage to Russian aerospace forces in the past day than the Ukrainian offensive has done in the past three weeks,” Michael Kofman, director of Russia studies at the CNA research group, said in a podcast.

I also read the second richest guy in Russia has fled to Turkey while another oligarch fled to Azerbaijan.
