Karma is a botched interview plagued with technical problems. Donald Trump's livestream with Elon Musk on X Spaces failed before it even began. On Monday evening, a major glitch on the Musk-owned platform delayed the event by over 40 minutes.

The service troubles echoed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis'bumpy campaign rollout on X (formerly Twitter) last year, which Trump mocked at the time, writing on Truth Social: "Wow! The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER!"

As the tables turned on Monday, Musk assured listeners that "worst case, we will proceed with a smaller number of live listeners and post the conversation later." The interview with Trump eventually began around 8:40 p.m. E.T. and the former president proceeded to rollout his usual laundry list of bigotry and rambled about immigration, crowd sizes, and his chummy relationships with dictators.

During the bumbling interview, Trump bizarrely cheered the Tesla CEO for firing striking workers. "You're the greatest cutter," praised the former president as Musk chuckled. "You just walk in and you just say, 'You wanna quit?' They go on strike, I won't mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, 'That's OK, you're all gone … Every one of you is gone.'"

As Trump rambled about his crowd sizes and desperately attempted to attack Vice President Kamala Harris, Musk proved to be an unskilled interviewer and struggled to get a word in — making for a weird, meandering conversation that lasted over two hours.

Shortly after the interview ended, the vice president issued a statement on "whatever that was."

"Donald Trump's extremism and dangerous Project 2025 agenda is a feature not a glitch of his campaign, which was on full display for those unlucky enough to listen in," read the statement. "Trump's entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself — self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024."

The high-profile interview — which Musk advertised as "unscripted with no limits on subject matter" — comes at a delicate moment for Trump's presidential campaign, which seemed like a juggernaut before President Joe Biden ceded the Democratic nomination to Vice President Harris last month. Trump now finds himself trailing in several key polls, and on the defensive as the insurgent Harris — with the help of running mate Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota — have taken control of the narrative around the race.

Musk is one of Trump's most vocal public allies, but the former president and the X owner haven't always gotten along. Musk said in 2022 that Trump needed to "sail into the sunset," to which Trump responded by taunting Musk over his "electric cars that don't drive long enough, driverless cars that crash, or rocketships to nowhere, without which subsidies he'd be worthless." A few months later, Musk said he would support Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the Republican primary.

DeSantis' primary campaign went down in flames, and Musk has now been cozying up to Trump for months, at least. The New York Times reported in March that the billionaire met with Trump and other prospective donors in Florida. Musk responded by writing that he would not be donating to either presidential candidate, but in early July, Bloomberg reported that he had donated a "sizable amount" to a pro-Trump super PAC.

Musk stopped playing coy following the assassination attempt against Trump in July, writing on X that he endorses Trump "fully." Soon after the endorsement, The Wall Street Journal reported that he was donating a whopping $45 million per month to a pro-Trump super PAC, a report Musk later denied. Musk — who has long been spread right-wing propaganda and misinformation on X — has since been praising Trump and attacking the Democratic ticket.

Trump, meanwhile, has been speaking fondly of Musk. "We have to make life good for our smart people," he said at a rally on July 20, referring to Musk, the world's richest person. "I love Elon Musk," he added, touting the report about how much money Musk was supposedly planning to give him.

It isn't surprising, then, that Trump gave Musk an interview, or that, in anticipation of the interview, he's resumed posting on X, posting some campaign videos and a missive lamenting how "America is in decline."
Trump's only other X post since he was banned from the platform following the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol was his mugshot after he was indicted in Georgia last August. Trump regularly posts on Truth Social, of course, and the stock price of TMTG, the company that owns the social network, started to tank after Trump dusted off his X account on Monday. Trump has a massive stake in TMTG, so posting on a competing social network and hurting the share price is notable.

I've read 2 different things this morning. The first is that Trump told Musk in the interview that if he loses they can do the next interview in Venezuela next year. Second there's a rumor that Putin and his inner core cronies have made a plan to run to Venezuela if Russia loses in Ukraine. Maduro could open a Political Pirate's Old Folks Home on the beach in Caracas.

There are many reasons why Trump should not be running for office again but this is not one of them. Tesla is a private company and the workers were not unionized. Every attempt by the UAW, the United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Workers United failed. And what does it take for workers to successfully unionize?

Have at least 30% of coworkers sign union authorization cards. File a petition for a union election with the  . Under the  , workers have the right to form unions several ways—but  voluntary recognition and NLRB union elections are the most common paths . steps-to-forming-a-union-final-412.pdf (nlrb.gov)

Simple fact that they couldn't get 30% of the workers to agree to unionize is telling.

So a private company fired workers who were striking (while not part of any union) and a political candidate applauds the act. Trump didn't help fire the workers, he simply applauded the act. Why are you against private companies doing what they decide to do? Do you think it would be better if the federal government stuck it's nose into all private business?

Were you upset when Reagan fired the striking air traffic controllers also?

Has it occurred to you that Tesla workers did not want to form a union because they had fellow workers who were being fired for wanting to unionize ? .  Very common management tactic.

Under federal labor law, it's illegal to fire workers for trying to form a union or taking other steps to improve their working conditions. The complaint will now be investigated by the NLRB, which can go to court to get the workers reinstated if it determines that Tesla broke the law. Tesla organizers say they were fired a day after launching union drive - CBS News

Tesla has fired more than 30 supporters of a nascent union at its Buffalo facility, just days after the organizing effort was announced, according to the union.

The union, Tesla Workers United, has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board alleging the company illegally fired its supporters.

The complaint lists the names of 18 employees it charges were fired “in retaliation for union activity and to discourage union activity.” But a statement from the union said that more than 30 employees were fired. It said the firings came on the heels of the   union organizing effort   announced earlier this week.

A U.S. carmaker that is not unionized ? Say it aint so Joe.

Should have looked harder as the investigation was completed and dismissed. Your link is a year and a half old, here's the followup.

The U.S. National Labor Relations Board  dismissed the claims Friday , finding that there was no merit to them, NLRB spokesperson Kayla Blado told The Messenger. Tesla, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment, has  denied  the accusations and said the employees were fired as part of a routine performance review process.

The Workers United union  filed  the case against Tesla in February, saying dozens of workers were fired from its Buffalo, New York, facility shortly after announcing a campaign to join Workers United. The workers were in the department overseeing the autopilot feature for the cars.

As I said above, there are many reasons why Trump should not win in November but this is not one of them. You have your opinion and I have mine. IMO the federal government has gotten too big and intrusive into our lives and needs to butt the hell out.

BTW, a president of the United States should never cheer on the firing of workers because they went on strike.

And a president of the United States should never join a picket line of striking workers.

But tell me, which one is worse? An ex-President applauding a private business owner for actions he took or a sitting President who joined a picket line with striking workers against a private business?

I'm not that old.

Reagan operated on the same principal with the striking ATC.

They were underpaid and seriously overworked. They were treated like dirt and in charge of thousands of lives. Reagan should have forced changes to help them and improve the whole system. Instead he took the easy way out and discarded people to make the whole system worse.

Yes they were but he also used them to make the point that federal workers are not allowed to strike.

At 7 a.m. on August 3, 1981, the union declared a strike, seeking better working conditions, better pay (PATCO sought a total raise of $600 million over three years, compared to FAA's offer of $105 million) [ 9 ]  and a 32-hour workweek (a  four-day week  and an  eight-hour day  combined). In addition, PATCO wanted to be excluded from the civil service clauses that it had long disliked. In striking, the union violated 5 U.S.C. (Supp. III 1956) 118p (now  5 U.S.C.   § 7311 ), which prohibits strikes by federal government employees . Anthony Skirlick of the Los Angeles Center warned that these “Unrealistic demands in the face of this change is suicide". [ 9 ]  Despite supporting PATCO's effort in his 1980 campaign,  Ronald Reagan  declared the PATCO strike a "peril to national safety" and ordered them back to work under the terms of the  Taft–Hartley Act . Only 1,300 (10%) of the nearly 13,000 controllers returned to work. [ 4 ]  At 10:55 a.m., Reagan included the following in a statement: "Let me read the solemn oath taken by each of these employees, a sworn affidavit, when they accepted their jobs: 'I am not participating in any strike against the Government of the United States or any agency thereof, and I will not so participate while an employee of the Government of the United States or any agency thereof.'" [ 11 ]  He then demanded those remaining on strike return to work within 48 hours or officially forfeit their positions. Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (1968) - Wikipedia

The union violated 5 U.S.C. (now 5 U.S.C. § 7311), which prohibits strikes by federal government employees.  Issues started between the Union and Carter's FAA, the union didn't endorse Carter in 1980.

As a condition of employment, the strikers had previously sworn, 'I am not participating in any strike against the Government of the United States or any agency thereof, and I will not so participate while an employee of the Government of the United States or any agency thereof."

PATCO then violated a federal court order to end the strike.

I'm a federal worker and a mandatory member of the  AFGE is the largest federal employee union.  I don't think that I should be able to strike and walk off of my job at the Pentagon.

Yes they were but he also used them to make the point that federal workers are not allowed to strike.

I don't think all the demands PATCO wanted were fair, but Reagan didn't even try to help. He just used his position to fuck the workers over. So, yeah... dick move. And it made things worse and cost more money to fix.

On August 5, following the PATCO workers' refusal to return to work, the Reagan administration fired the 11,345 striking air traffic controllers who had ignored the order, and banned them from federal service for life. In the wake of the strike and mass firings, the FAA was faced with the difficult task of hiring and training enough controllers to replace those that had been fired. Under normal conditions, it took three years to train new controllers.
