Here's your answer. I know I used Wikipedia as a source but I'm referencing one of the documentaries I watched over the weekend. I also watched "Bad Faith"

God and Country is on Prime. Bad Faith is on MAX. I highly suggest both. They will send shivers down your spine

God & Country is a 2024 American documentary film directed by Dan Partland and produced by Rob Reiner. The film discusses the emergence of Christian nationalism and its close relationship with far-right politics in the United States, exploring its perceived threat to democracy and the politicization of Christianity. The documentary is based on Katherine Stewart's book The Power Worshippers (2020). [3] [4] It is distributed by Oscilloscope Laboratories. [5]

Development

[edit]

The film is based on the work of author and journalist Katherine Stewart. Her nonfiction book, The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism (2019) [] concerns the rise of Christian nationalism in the United States and its close connection with right wing politics which supports the politics of Donald Trump. [3] Katherine Stewart signed with Anonymous Content. Steve Okin, who worked in the Christian film industry sector for Sony, whose brother, Jeff Okin, is a manager at Anonymous Content, brought it to the attention of Rob Reiner. Reiner read the book and brought Dan Partland on board. [6]

Before coming on board as director, Dan Partland worked on similar themes in his previous film, Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump (2020). [5] Partland chose to work on the film because he believed that Christian nationalism threatened both democracy and Christianity. "The problem is the intertwining of a Christian identity with a political identity such that it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The danger to democracy led me to explore this topic, but what I learned in the process is that the threat may be even greater to the Church itself." [1] Oscilloscope Laboratories acquired the domestic rights to the film in September 2023. [1]

Release

[edit]

God & Country was shown at a private screening organized by the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty at the United States Capitol Visitor Center on January 11, 2024, [3] followed by its world premiere at the 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 10, [7] and its theatrical release on February 16. [3]

Reception

[edit]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 89% of 27 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The website's consensus reads: " God & Country offers a chilling and bracingly effective look at political forces aligning in an effort to erase the barrier between church and state." [8]

Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "It's not surprising that Dan Partland's documentary about the increasing influence of Christian Nationalism begins and ends with footage from Jan. 6., 2021. Christian Nationalists were among the principal organizers of the insurrection that occurred that day, which featured a trespasser carrying a Christian flag onto the Senate floor. God & Country , which counts Rob Reiner among its producers, delivers a bracing primer on the rise of this political movement that should thoroughly scare the large majority of American adults who don't embrace it." [9]

The film opened on the weekend of February 16, 2024, in 85 theaters and brought in $38,415 over an extended four-day weekend. [10] [11]

Emphatically. They fly it under their personal righteousness banner. They are emboldened. In part, it is due to liberals who are generally apathetic about what some conservatives do (in their daily lives). But it is a mistake, as some conservatives make good use of the time (and indifference) to mount robust defenses and support from others tittering on the edge of acceptance of the truth or its nemesis - negative propaganda.

There are Christians who are practicing their faith in sincerity. Unfortunately, not many of them appear to be White Evangelical Right church goers. I could tear those folks a new one. . . but they are intent on NOT listening to anybody who would aid them in a return to niceness. They seem to be determined to 'run' people down and reestablish the America that could not sustain itself (because it was ignorant/unsophiscated/in danger of being 'forgotten' and passed over by other sophisticated nations moving onward.

I'm hip. my last real date more than a decade ago invited me to attend church with her after we woke up the next morning. I sort of felt like I probably should after her performance the night before, so I agreed. it was tolerable the first 20 minutes or so, then the preacher went off on a political rant about obama and I had enough and told my "date" I wanted to leave. she didn't want to so I told her I was leaving and after a few minutes I stood up, the preacher looked at me, and I flipped him off old school against my chest and left. my date, which had been a work colleague for 20 years, hasn't spoken to me since. bfd

The danger to democracy led me to explore this topic, but what I learned in the process is that the threat may be even greater to the Church itself.

The threat to the Church (itself) is it becoming irrelevant once people realize that something 'shady' is going on with what Churches are messaging. You can not teach against killing while committing murder as a zealot. And you can not teach love to people who can see clearly that they are being suppressed by those who 'SAY' they do it for the good. And, you damn sure can't convince a generation of people who have gotten away from under the suppression that they should ignore watching the REESTABLISHMENT of the 'box' they departed being put around them again.

There won't be much of a country left with the planned destruction of it under the new "TV Host" administration. Really crazy that the so called "Christian" right didn't have a meltdown over Trump abandoning the National Anthem for the criminal J6 Anthem he played instead on the campaign trail. Trump a reality show star,  Elon Musk a South African guest of various TV shows and movie cameos, Dr. Oz a Turkish Muslim TV doctor, Fox News array of failed hosts with no qualifications to serve Americans, repeat of Linda McMahon of WWE fame being investigated for aiding the sex abuse of young men along with her husband, the sex abuse scandals and ties to Jeffrey Epstein alone throughout this administration is enough proof that right wing voters care nothing about America, the National Anthem, true patriotism or morals.

Wow. That is heavy reading, G2. I don't think the "Christian nationalists (CN)" on TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network) got the memo that CN are anti-Semitic, because those right-wingers are 'close' to Israel and even send yearly tours and "teams of worship leaders" to Israel directly to do shows there. Also, they support Jewish citizens in Israel. They are 'friends' of Israel in this current war and stand against Hamas. (Even doing local broadcasts from Israel and supporting Netanyahu in his hard-liner stance) against Hamas and Palestinians.

Their "support" for and "friendship" with Israel rings hollow.  It's based strictly on their "End Times" theology and has nothing to do with whatever might really be their feelings and opinions about the Jewish people.

I 'feel' your position, but to be frank I am confused about this Jewish 'take' on this. As I have never in my life (a long time - as I have crossed the old-age line now) heard anybody dispute the "end times" as against Jews singularly. My understanding of the end times in Christian theology is the end of the world, literally. That means all of us. Everybody done and gone to judgement.

Frankly, I am shocked to hear the end-times explained any other way than that I gave. I simply have not heard it in or outside of churches. I would never attend a church that teaches us to hate 'anybody' or wish death upon others either. Which is why I am a fierce defender of others on this site-even against the Right-wing that has its "selected groups" to demonize, in my opinion.

Finally, (sigh) I am a staunch believer that people are more familiar and firm in their positions which they study and/or live through. So I do not doubt your resolve. I simply don't know how to take it. . . and couple it to my understanding of the Church and Israel.

Lastly, I remember hearing (maybe even reading) about the 'conflicts' that the Church had with Jews over the crucifixion of Jesus in the Bible text (still today). But, I have never heard any preacher - blame Jews expressly as in wanting them to pay for it by hating them.

To be clear, I have heard people make retorts of the kind about 'Jewing someone down' - in the ignorant years of the 60-70's more than in later years- but that was isolated and very UNCOMFORTABLE discussions for them. . . .  You may know the 'type' of people that say awkward stuff and you can't get them to stop it.

As this subject is somewhat awkward to address, I hope that I have not offended you my friend. I will say this, it is time to touch this third rail - however briefly at first, but to get some understanding. . . because some of us Christians don't see it negatively as it may be suspected or believed by some Jews.

On a more upbeat of sorts note: Should GOP Huckabee become the ambassador for Israel we will get to see how he honors (or dishonors) the position, because Huckabee is proliferate in whatever position he holds. (In his own way he is 'loud and aggressive" using a passive style of community.) We will hear from him. He is very comfortable in the spotlight.

That said above, I wish to be clear. Several positions can be held at the same time. I do not agree with what Netanyahu is doing to the Palestinian civilians. That is wrong. That is too much. I can not support the lack of proportionality and a lapse into vengeance upon innocent people. But I will defend Israel's right to exist as a people free of attacks and able to prosper as other do! John Hagee, the  controversial  Texas televangelist and founder of Christians United for Israel, an influential Christian Zionist advocacy group,  long has been  one of the most visible and powerful proponents of this ideology. On Oct. 15, Hagee preached at Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia, a megachurch pastored by televangelist Jentezen Franklin. Speaking in front of a cartoonish mural that purported to depict the events in the  Book of Revelation , Hagee  maintained  that the epic showdown at Armageddon, or the Mount of Meggido in Israel, will be “the most bloody battle ever recorded in the history of the world.” He claimed the Bible prophesied that for armies that “come against Israel” from China, Russia or Iran, “God is going to wipe them out.” After that, he predicted, “there will be 1,000 years of perfect peace, no presidential elections, no fake news, none of all of this nonsense.” Instead, there will be “one king, and one leader, Jesus Christ the Son of God. One law, it will be his law.

At the heart of Christian Zionism is not a love for Israel but rather Christian nationalism. Christian Zionists maintain that the Book of Genesis says that God will bless those who bless Israel, and curse those who curse it. They  insist  that if America, as a country, does not “bless” Israel (that is, offer its government its unconditional support), God will curse America. Conveniently, those who Christian Zionists claim are insufficiently supportive of Israel are usually Democrats. In his recent sermon, Hagee baselessly accused President Biden of “treason,” without specifying why. He also urged his audience to “vote for someone who at least loves America” and to “blame Biden for their [sic] corrupt betrayal of America and the American people.”

-MSNBC (your comment link)

G2, I understand where you are going from now!  Just to be clear, it is not all Christians who take that type of understanding of the end times prophecies, as the Church is not a unitary agency.

But, I can see where Christian Right can get (and has gotten) itself in trouble, because it does this kind of 'leaping' in all its meddlings in the affairs of "Others." I, guess, I am obligated to see why Jews would be offended in our faith in Jesus! :)

That said, at the end of the day, the "end time" prophecies though rich in violent imagery. . .is actually a statement about coming joy for the world in that finally the world will cease from groining under the 'burden' of men's imperfection. . .because GOD will be with man/kind in tangible ways.

Romans 8:

22  For we know tha t the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain togethe r until now.

23  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Now, I can see from the perspective of 'another' how this could feel offensive. But, yet I caution, that the point of the 'end times' is a COMBINE of Jews and Christians dwelling together in the PRESENCE of God (after the Judgement).

Point make. Point taken. Now then, let me 'chew' on what these "evangelicals" are doing for a while. (They are always, always, always, up to something in the larger scheme of life!)

I did not read the "Left Behind" books. However, I did see the video version once in 1993 thereabouts. I was not impressed, even though I watched it in a church-setting with others. Don't get  me wrong, I considered its message but was not 'consumed' by the presentation (too many questions). I have been reading about 'end times' since writers and 'theorist' proposed that the mark of the beast was. . . BARCODES. Also, remember the people who used to walk around with "The End is Near' billboards standing on street corners?

The 144,000 "witnesses" is a symbolic expression about 'wholeness' of those who come to faith. The bible is not clear on how to understand the mention of them (although, I must apologize as I have not refreshed my memory on that topic right now).

Should Christians be open to other faiths as equally valid? Excellent question!

Christ clearly stated that He was the only path to salvation... but what does that mean? A path is something to be followed. So "following Jesus is the path to salvation". What is Jesus's path? He was pretty explicit: "love one another".

Now then... If one arrives at "love one another" from a starting point other than Jesus... haven't they "followed His path"?

Now then... If one arrives at "love one another" from a starting point other than Jesus... haven't they "followed His path"?

You're describing the concept Christians recognize as "inclusivism".  Inclusivism affirms that Jesus Christ is the sole source of salvation but allows that people of other religions may be saved through Christ, even if they do not explicitly know or profess Him.

Not all Christians believe this, but it's probably more commonly accepted than not.

It's difficult to reconcile the concept of a forgiving God who loved the world so much so that he sent his only son to die on the cross as redemption for our sins while simultaneously thinking that some poor Polynesian who died in 400 AD is consigned to hell simply for being born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Your comment (overnight/sleeping on it) gave me a new thought:

G2, can you help me follow the logic to how Christians can believe in Jesus as Lord and "End time prophecies" adjoining. . . without being "anti-semitic" in the sense expressed at 6?

(I know this is going the extra mile and I appreciate the effort to get to substance on some of these matters of discussion.)

Respect for our 'host' who permits this endeavor.

Well, it is not like there is any 'Go-to' living to interview! :) Moreover, languages are whatsoever they are. That is, it can't be helped to make the book 'make sense' because of the nature of languages. People do the best they can with it. The real problem comes when and with people who take up the Bible and wield its content for their own indulgent (unreasonable) purposes.

Should Christians be open to other faiths as equally valid? Excellent question!

That's not a question for me to answer.  That's a question for Christians, I guess, and frankly, I couldn't care less if they do or they don't. The only thing I'm really interested in is that they mind their own business and leave everyone else alone.

Thank you for a response. Honestly, I thought you have just 'spurned' the question. . . for which I was perplexed as to why it would be so, but can accept. . .  . It does perplex me that Jews would think 'bad' of Christians (in general) at this point. That said, I probably should not EXPAND and combine the issues of Christianity in general with Christian Nationalism specifically. I will 'look' for a different discussion and try to understand the question I asked 'there' when it happens.

I don't believe that's the case.  I know lots of Christians that I don't think badly of at all and I'm great friends with.  Every other Jew I know is the same.  I'm married to a devout Catholic who I love very much, and I'm good friends with all of her family.  I like Christmas music!  Of course, much of the best Christimas music was written by Jews, but that's a whole other story.

You are a good Christian man and don't ever think that CN is the same as real Christianity. I'm a recovering Catholic and I do believe my former parish priest would not recognize the Christianity that the CNs are spouting

I think it's similar to the effect many dieticians have identified with their patients thinking about their diet too often which leads to unhealthy behavior.

" Yes, many dietitians agree that constantly thinking about your diet and becoming overly preoccupied with food choices can be detrimental to your health, as it can lead to stress, guilt, and potentially disordered eating behaviors"

These so-called Christians obsess over NOT sinning, but in doing so they think about that sin all the time which of course can lead to an "unhealthy obsession" and potentially "binging sins". The list is too long to put here but if you look up "rightwing" or "Republican Christian crime" you'll find many lists and articles like: The Devil You Know: The Surprising Link between Conservative Christianity and Crime - Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Book Reviews

“…my first date…”

September 25th, 1976…

Asked an A-lister to the homecoming dance. She said yes but was having a miserable time. Asked to take her home,  she said please, and our mutual friend was sitting on her stoop waiting for her.

Went back to the dance, asked my true love to dance…Nights in White Satin…and it was the best thing ever, and led to the best 42 years of my life. I miss her so.
