The memo was issued the same day the White House urged Cabinet members to "aggressively" urge staffers to return to in-person work.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services told hundreds of California-based employees to work from home for the foreseeable future due to rising crime in the area surrounding the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building in San Francisco.

In addition to HHS, the 18-story building also houses the Labor Department, the Transportation Department and the office of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

HHS Assistant Secretary for Administration Cheryl Campbell advised employees to stay home in a memo to regional leaders earlier this month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"In light of the conditions at the (Federal Building) we recommend employees … maximize the use of telework for the foreseeable future," she wrote in the memo.

"This recommendation should be extended to all Region IX employees, including those not currently utilizing telework flexibilities," Campbell also wrote, referring to the federal zone that encompasses California and other Western states.

The memo was issued on the same day that White House chief of staff Jeff Zients wrote an email to the Cabinet calling for members to "aggressively" urge staffers to return to in-person work in order "to deliver better results for the American people," according to Axios.

It is unclear whether other agencies in the building issued similar orders. Officials with the Labor Department and Pelosi's office said they are working closely with law enforcement to ensure safety, but they have not issued a work-from-home advisory.

Next to or across from the building, dozens of dealers operate in shifts as buyers use their newly-purchased drugs, according to the Chronicle. The concrete benches on the property are popular for people to use drugs or socialize.

Data from the San Francisco Police Department shows that homicides and robberies in 2023 have increased more than 10% from this time last year in the city.

Just got to love Democrat policies.

One would think they would see the problems and actually try to make the necessary changes.

Coming from a city that absolutely refuses to clean up it's city or it's act, why would this be surprising in the least?

It's not surprising in the least.  However it is funny the timing with the WH Chief of Staff trying to get everybody back to work in the office.

Perfectly normal and not evidence that crime is out of control and that the local prosecutors/ police hands off approach to crime has completely foreseeable consequences, that’s for sure.

In fact, to get rid of crime altogether just keep  electing soros funded district attorneys in San Francisco and crime will cease to exist. Everything will be legal and/or no one will report crimes because nothing happens when you do.  Crime Problem solved.

Foreseeable future meaning until the dems are kicked out of office.

San Franciscans face about a  1-in-16 chance  each year of being a victim of property or violent crime, which makes  the city more dangerous than 98 percent of US cities , both small and large. To put this in perspective,  Compton, California , the infamous home of drug gang turf wars, and which today remains more dangerous than 90 percent of all US cities, is almost twice as safe as San Francisco.

It is so sad that what once was such a beautiful city could become such a hell hole.

Didn't take long either. When things go bad, they can go bad quick. Similar to what happened to Detroit between the 50s and 70s.

Detroit in those days was a perfect storm for disaster.

San Francisco owes it all to its "Board of Supervisors."

Even the big money is calling it quits on the core city.

Remember San Francisco fondly from the years I lived and worked near San Mateo. Saddened to see its deterioration.

I assume the worst that happened to it in those days was the San Fransisco Chronicle receiving a letter with the greeting: "This is the Zodiac speaking."

I had numerous visits to SF.  My first visit was in 77, then I lived in Monterey in the early 80's and my last visit was in 95.  Union Square was a thriving commercial hub of downtown then. Today:

"The bottom line? Approximately 203 retailers were open on the streets surrounding Union Square in 2019. By May 2023, only 107, or 53%, were still in business."
