Guantao county of Handan, Hebei province, is known for its black pottery, which was listed as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Combining traditional black pottery artistry with lacquer painting, local artisans create a multitude of pottery products.

There are more than 10 black pottery companies in the county, providing jobs for more than 1,100 rural residents. Each worker can earn an annual income of about 20,000 yuan ($2,800).

We have one piece of black pottery that holds a small supply of incense sticks that we keep on our shrine to GuanYin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

I'm surprised that the artisans only earn 20,000 yuan a year.  I guess it is very inexpensive to live there, or else it is only a part-time job for them.  However, since abject poverty has been eradicated in China they must still enjoy the necessities of a decent roof over their heads and good food on the table.

Very nice.  The Chinese aesthetic is so fantastic.  I truly appreciate all aspects of Chinese art and the Chinese peoples' artistry.

Having born and lived most of my life in a relatively young country, I have been captivated in spending the past more than 16 years in a country with 5000 years of history, tradition, culture and fantastic artistry.
