Huang Yongyu, one of the most productive and best-known artists in the second half of the 20th century in China, died on Tuesday, according to a statement from his family. He was 99.
Huang was recognized as a legendary figure in Chinese art and design. He basically taught himself to paint and write. His versatility has been acknowledged in woodcuts, ink painting, composing poems and essays and novels, and designing postage stamps.
The comprehensiveness of Huang's artistic ability arose from his perseverance, self-learning and long-term accumulation of experiences by taking on different jobs in his early years and extensive traveling at home and around the world.
Here are some of his works.

Artist Huang Yongyu is known for his great vigor and versatility. He paints, writes, designs, creates prints and draws comics. And at 94, he has fallen into a new habit of art creation: carving figures on earthen "zisha" teapots. [Photo provided to China Daily]

Although I'm not particular about his postage stamps designs, I kind of like his other works, which seems to be fairly varied. I think that the figures in the Food Stands in Taiwan woodblock image have a kind of Picassoesque look.
Traditional and contemporary. Nice.
Best of both worlds.
The cranes are great.
That image made me think of meerkats.
I like them all but especially the girl from the Sani ethnic group.
There are so many different ethnic groups here, and their dress differs but all are colourful.
Love the cranes. I bet that is worth a pretty penny.
I couldn't find a specific answer, but I did find this:
It would be worth it. Only going to be worth more. If I could, had the money or the means, I would purchase it at that price in a second.
I kinda like the owl too.
What price?
7k USD. If I had the cash I would in a second.
I can't find a site that gives a sale price for any of the paintings in the article, but I did read that his paintings have sold for as little as $178 to as much as a quarter million dollars.
The quarter mil sounds more about right.
Just goes to show what one could buy from someone originally and not pay so much yet their worth skyrockets.
Will post a link to this shortly.
Thank you. This artist has already deservedly received praise. Having also opened sites with many of his other works I am impressed as well by his versatility - the skill he displays notwithstanding the variety of his styles.
