Butterflies come from a chrysalis and moths come from a cocoon, and that is neither.

Okay, if it's not a butterfly or moth, or maybe even a baby caterpillar, then if that's its mouth it's either eating something or regurgitating something it couldn't digest, or if it's the other end, it's one big fancy poop.  Have I covered the waterfront?

5.1.3  Hal A. Lujah  replied to  Buzz of the Orient @5.1.2    9 months ago

So I looked into it further, and apparently it is a caterpillar molting its skin.

Monarch caterpillars molt (shed their skin) five times throughout their larval stage. The "skin" that is left behind is actually the caterpillar's exoskeleton. An insect's skeleton is on the outside, as opposed to on the instead like mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Endoskeletons provide support inside the body in the form of bones and cartilage, whereas As caterpillars grow, their exoskeleton gets too tight, so they need to shed it in order to continue to grow. Each molt results in a new "instar" stage. Therefore, when the egg hatches, that tiny 2 mm caterpillar is in its first instar stage.

It will molt three more times and grow exponentially over a couple of weeks. Each stage lasts 3-5 days. The fifth and final molt is when the fifth instar caterpillar becomes a chrysalis.

Is it the colours etc that look similar to the blankets?

According to some legends, it comes from the Navajo blanket weavers and one weaver in particular because of the bright colors of both the flower and the blankets. The legend states that the weaver's grave is covered in the flower like a blanket to honor him.

It gets its name from the Navajo blankets which are very colorful. As the legend goes a Navajo weaver who was famous and when he died the flower covered his grave like a field of the flower would do. Original Navajo blankets are very expensive and highly sought after by collectors. The number is limited and the weavers produce very few in a year.

The oldest one known is dated around 1804 and has a very sad history.

The oldest surviving Navajo rug is a so-called  Massacre Cave blanket , dated to around 1804, when a group of Navajo people seeking refuge in the holy cave, Canyon de Chelley, were shot and killed by the Spanish.

This is a photo of a Navajo weaver. As you can see it is all done by hand looms no power of any kind is used and the art is passed on from weaver to weaver which is generally a family member.

Critters from down under. The Quokka is the cutest and friendliest of all the interesting critters from OZ.

I believe that the only area they are now found in is Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth.

Morning..yes Quokkas are found on Rottnest Island and a small area on the mainland on WA...

Foxes and feral cats which my brother shoots on sight here have decimated the population..approx 10,000 live on Rottnest..

But given evolution I am sure it's just a matter of time before it bites, stings, eats, kills ya etc etc ...

We have a reputation to protect and cute little furballs don't cut it here..😁

Rottnest Island is where I saw them. A funny story about that venture. Red and I took a tour on a small bus and Red had this super duper camera with long-range telescopic lenses I told her that she should have the super long range lense because the Quokkas are very small and would be a long way from us if we even saw any so with the biggest long-range lens off we went. The driver stopped the bus and opened the door and there were dozens of Quokkas waiting for us and within 5 feet of us...LOL and here we are trying to get the damn long-range lens off so we could get a photo. Talk about a three-ring circus we should have seen us...We finally got the lens off and were able to get a number of good photos since they were so close we had to be careful not to step on one.

LOL
