cool photos, amac. here's my blue heron story ...

a few decades ago I went to a clients home that he had just bought so that I could measure it for some home improvements. I didn't get an answer at the door, so I called him and he told me he was in the backyard and to come around back. I went thru the gate and there he stood next to an overgrown water feature in his yard with a net in his hand.

he was removing the goldfish from basically a mud hole now with a small pile of rocks on one end that was once a small waterfall, long unused and abandoned. we moved the rocks and then we started removing the fish with a net and putting them into a tub of clear water. his backyard had an unobstructed view that overlooked a large reservoir in the north suburbs.

as we're clearing the little pond of now pretty big goldfish, a blue heron swoops in and lands not more than 6 feet from us. we look at each other with WTF? on both our faces. the blue heron takes a step closer to the tub and then starts helping itself to the fish we had collected in it. after it emptied the tub it took off and we looked at each other and cracked up. neither of us had ever been that close to a usually very wary of humans type of bird.

we didn't find any more fish in the pond with the net, so we tossed all the water feature rocks into the hole and filled it with potting soil he had bought. we went back into the home afterwards and while I measured the project and calculated the price, he got cleaned up. he comes back down to the kitchen and I hand him the bid. he looks at it, asks the usual questions, and then tells me to draw up the contract. to this day, I'm convinced that blue heron closed that large lucrative deal for me.

The light from my office window illuminates the water in the new paludarium beautifully in the mornings. If you look close you'll see 2 male Endler's Livebearers. I put 3 of them in yesterday morning.

Morning evil..so you plonked in 3 but can only see 2... so does that mean someone ate someone...or 1 is in hiding?

You do a fantastic job setting up the tanks..look great...

The mysterious disappearance of fish from an aquarium only happened to me when I tried to keep goldfish.  I think one of thm was a piranha in disguise.

No drama Mac...you have alot on your plate and just go with the flow..

We are all big enough and ugly enough to look after ourselves on here.

Just remember to look after yourself and Mrs Mac, take it a day at a time and slow and steady as you go..

My motto..sloth out when needed.

It has been very dry and hot here, things are a little behind.  I have been watering every 2-3 days.  I am getting a few tomatoes but cukes and squash dried up.

I use old swing sets as trellises 256

Bailey does a good job keeping pests out of the garden.

My wife brought home a huge cucumber from her mini-farm today, made a delicious soup with it.  Back in Toronto we  named our dog Bailey as well, because she was the colour of Bailey's Irish Cream.

Surpisingly it has hardly been the furnace Chongqing is reputed for being this summer, hardly ever requiring us to turn on the air conditioning, so generally we ARE staying cool.  There has, however, been floods in Chongqing, but far from where we are, where the rain has not been that big a problem.

We are quite well down on rainfall so far this year which is very unusual for Victoria..but we have along way to go yet with winter and have a feeling it will bite us somewhere along the way..

We haven't copped the wind either so far normally we have been blown off the face of the earth not that I am complaining..I hate the wind..

I have never minded the wind unless it rises to a dangerous level, or even to one that disturbs something in a negative way.  In fact, at home, when we're not using the air conditioning I position a fan to blow on me, even when i'm in bed.  I find it easier to breathe than stagnant air.
