I've spent a lot of time in the desert over my life and it never made me feel small and insignificant.  Maybe you've been to a different desert.

probably the wrong choice of words on my part. I used to go to lake powell and spend time on my boat in the summers, to get away from my everyday world and to help me adjust my perspective in it. here's a few youtube videos that illustrate what I struggle to find the words to describe.

pretty hard to find something wrong with a place where any direction you travel always ends up on the beach.

I once knew a girl named Iris, but she wasn't so subtle, however your iris is quite lovely - I played a little with mine.

It’s from my iPhone in portrait mode, then sharpened with basic photoshop functions.  Then I finished it with the Picsart app, adding the vignette and borders.  All done on my phone while watching tv (the bottom one too, but it was way more complicated).  Smartphones are like a paradigm shift in creativity.

What I think makes the top photo special is the mountains in the distance, and as for the bottom one, the contrast between the living and the dead - the Joshua tree and the unusual rock formation.  Good work.

Thanks, Dig.  Joshua Tree National Park is an amazing place.  Really beautiful.  I first started going there to camp out with friends when I was a teenager.  Back then it was still called Joshua Tree National Monument.  We even had our own hidden camping spot at a site called Jumbo Rocks, away from the other campsites.

The most incredible experience I had there was one spring after a lot of rain.  We were there for a long weekend.  As the weekend progressed the entire desert floor, for as far as you could see, was blanketed in flowers, and it just kept getting more and more almost with each hour.  I will never forget that.

I actually used to go with my family to Palm Springs, even when I was young.  Palm Springs was just a village back then.  My grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins would all go.  It was a blast.  Joshua Tree is north of Palm Springs.  There are very beautiful canyons where you can hike in the Palm Springs area that have streams and waterfalls.  They are all on property owned by the local Indian tribe.

The big one in the middle is a famous Australian landmark.  It was named Ayers Rock by a non-indigenous person, although the indigenous people's name for it is Uluru.  Right, shona?  I prefer that.

Arvo G...yep you are spot on.. Ayres rock was named by an early explorer in the 1870s..the first white person to ever see it...

But the local Kooris have known of its existence for 60,000 years..

I to prefer the name Uluru and the local Kooris have now taken possession and guardianship of the rock once again..

The first thing they did was stop people climbing up it and desecrating it..

All trace of human activity has been removed off Uluru and it has been left to return to its natural state..as it should be...

My best mountain experience here was for my wife and I to climb the Sacred Buddhist Mount Emei in western Sichuan Province.  To take us partway up, a cable car delivers us above the clouds:

Looking down on the way up, the view was breathtaking:

As Joni wrote and sang, we looked at clouds from both sides now:

.

Many tourists on the rest of the way up.

But the biggest thrill was to see the snow-capped mountains of Nepal far to the west.
