On January 29, 2025,  American Eagle Flight 5342 , a scheduled domestic passenger flight operated by a  Bombardier CRJ700 series  airliner collided mid-air with a  United States Army   Sikorsky UH-60L Black Hawk  helicopter while on  final approach  to  Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport  near  Washington, D.C. . Both aircraft crashed into the  Potomac River , killing all 67 people on board the two aircraft.

Post what you wish; I just felt this should take precedent at the start.

In my case it's noon, and I'm wishing everyone safety.  What bothers me is why it is necessary to be flying helicopters around so close to a civilian airport.  can't the training flights be done somewhere a little more remote?  I'm hearing that blame is being put a shortness of flight controllers, but why put them to the test of having to deal with helicopter training flights?

The helicopters are MILITARY Blackhawks; these fly around Washington D.C. because of the need for. NATIONAL SECURITY. While the crash details are under investigation, the LIKELY PROBABILITY OF SUCH AN ACCIDENT is directly CONNECTED TO DECISIONS EARIER IN THE WEEK BY THE WHITE HOUSE TO gut the key aviation safety advisory committee, leaving it without members once tasked with examining safety issues at airlines and airports & Elon Musk fired an FAA adminisitrator to avoid his SPACEX violation resulting in a $283,009 penalty. The company was given 30 days to appeal the fines, which totalled $633,009.

THIS IS NOT FOR DISCUSSION. I posted the information only because of Buzz's inquiry.

It is a somber evening, and at some point in the next four years there will more similar to this in some way. Tragedy is a part of life and no one is guaranteed tomorrow.

We arent going to get sincere condolences from the White House for any of it, so its good we can show it towards each other and the victims.

It is very sad.  Our hearts are broken for the victims of this tragic accident and their families and friends.

The Japanese poet, Kobayashi Issa, wrote the following haiku when confronted with his daughter's death.

I put this together on Saturday and then on Sunday took it all down and started over. I moved the wood further back to give more room up front and swapped out the dragonstone with some locally granite. I have got a new light and baby canister filter that I'll be setting up tomorrow. This one is really difficult to get good photos. There are a lot of reflections and illuminating under the water line overexposes everything above the water line.

Just stepped out my back door..

The sky is orange and the sun is red..it will be from the bushfires 200 kms north of me..the next few days the temperature is heading to the high 30s again..not good if anything is in its path..

This is what it's like and gives an eerie feel and rather unnerving...

Not my photo this was last month up the Grampians and the fire is still burning... very rugged and inaccessible much to the area's detriment...

THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 4 TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS AND GOING FOR WHAT WAS THOUGHT TO BE IMPOSSIBLE, A THREE PEAT.

512

There are two Native Americans on the Chiefs, this is a photo of the All Pro Center Creed Humphreys and the other is James Winchester (yes that is Winchester as in rifle)

Of course the Eagle is a symbol of NAs and we hold it great respect so when you are awarded an eagle feather it is the moment of a life time. How we get eagle feathers, you cannot kill an eagle that would be a huge disaster and you would be banned for life from the tribe, you had to take a tail feather while the eagle was very much alive and ready to fight. Most would find an eagle nest high in a tree, skinny up the tree and snatch a tail feather from the eagle.

The game will be a tough one but in the end the mighty Chiefs will prevail.

The only US accent I've ever had understanding was a heavy Cajun accent, but I don't think you hear that much anymore.  Broadcast English has softened accents.

Broadcast English has softened accents

something sure has. my guess was going to be attending out of state colleges or the more mobile nature of job seekers dispersed in the last 50 years. I have relatives with younger adults and I've interacted with college kids born and raised in the south without any perceptible regional accents at all. I've had people tell me they hear the south in my mouth, but I only lived there the first 8 months of my life. yet my mom was from PA and my dad was from denver. grandad lived in NYC till he was 16, then WVA, then northwest PA, and I never heard any of those in his voice. go figure ...

I sound southern.

I remember a while back I was listening to NPR on the drive home, and the narrator of the story airing at the time was describing her hometown of New Orleans.  I would never have guess she was from the south at all, let alone New Orleans.  She really had no detectable accent at all.  I was a bit disappointed.

I have an aunt who has lived in Texas for decades.  She sounds almost like Rue McClanahan.
