This video is of the Western Grebe, the bird that runs on water. There is a smaller version of the bird as well that stay in large flocks and do the same thing. I used to seem them all the time when I was fishing in California. Amazing birds.
I was watching one of the Planet Earth shows on BBC. They were showing, I think they were Albatross, and their nesting habits. The young when learning to fly would get tired and land on the water. When they did sharks would be waiting and grab them.
Something a little different. Before and after, a couple of months apart.
Not the best pics but I can tell a difference. I was originally going to do a small reef tank but that was looking expensive. I have never grown plants before. They seem to be doing good.
No, it is smaller. Only a 20 gal. long. It was an old tank from my Niece that I had sitting in a closet. Thought I need to either set it up or get rid of it.
Those things though I worried they would get to big. I do have some kind of little sucker in there. He did great at first, I had a brown algae bloom and he loved it. Cleaned it up in a couple of days. He doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the green algae.
I think I have a pic of his underneath. It is only like two inches long.
Pleco are a hard core fish. I had a Oscar over a foot long that hated my pleco that was over a foot long, in a 150 gallon tank. They would go at it. My scum sucker would eat a slow moving feeder if he got the chance.
Yeah that was my worry, the size. They do look prehistoric though. I was going to get a couple of bottom feeders to throw in there and add another little sucker or two like the one I have. I read that they actually like to be around a couple of their own.
I had a couple of plans then the crap went down. Now kinda stuck with what I got.
My father had an Oscar when I was a kid. I remember it kept jumping out of the tank.
Leaves are just starting to come out on the Maple trees, so I'm expecting the Hummingbirds back within a couple of weeks. Until then, here are a couple that got here last week. I'm pretty sure they're part of the same family that has been nesting here for many years now.
They are Robins, MALES, which have darker heads than do the females.
Their colors are also much brighter, since their job is to draw any predators away from the nest. One of these kept trying to get close to a female today and she kept driving him off. I'm not an expert in the psychology or sexual practices of Robins, but I don't think that she was ready to mate yet, at least not with him.
In my photo archives I have a whole series of close up pictures of a Robin nest that I took about 20 years ago. I suspect that they were the ancestors of these birds. Maybe, over the next few weeks, I'll put in a couple of samples of each stage of nestling growth. I got lucky and had the Robins build their nest on the window sill of my upstairs bathroom. All I had to do was poke the lens through the blinds and snap the shutter. I got some shots every day from the eggs until the nestlings figured out how to fly and left the nest.
Until I told her about the nest, my wife thought I was going a bit weird, hauling a camera into the bathroom every day. She loved the picture series though, as did the fourth grade teacher at the school that was across the street. I took a CD with the series on it over to her in time for her to use it in her science class.
When I was in Canada, the first appearance of Robins was a sure sign of Spring. Neve seen a Robin here - one would think that their RED breasts would make them welcome. LOL
Great in-flight catch, Mac. Very striking. Looks like a male and female pair. Hard to tell in a way as the rest of the one sitting is hidden by whatever the bird is sitting on, so not sure of the different genders of the two.
Another disappearing comment. I wrote one yesterday to say that I couldn't find a mouse snatcher. The only things I could think of were an owl or a snake so if either of them is in the photo they sure as hell are well disguised.
The little brown bird atop the article is a Carolina Wren; we're not limited to birds or any one subject, so, post whatever the FLOCK ya' got!
I don't think I've ever seen a Carolina Wren. It's a cool little bird.
They are wonderful little birds. I have a family of them in my backyard. I was sitting on the deck one evening and one flew into my lap.
The Blue Heron is very pretty in flight. But, the Northern Male Cardinal is truly majestic. Very beautiful.
A pair of white pelicans
I think this is a yellow rumped warbler
And since we are not limited to birds...lol
Great series of photos, EG.
OMG!!! A Chippy! I love me those Chppys! Adorbs!

Nature can be cruel.
Beautiful birds, Kavika. Thanks for sharing to video.
I don't have any good recent bird ones. Caught this in part of a pic.
And that one as well.
Nothing wrong with that - I think it's a pretty good shot.
Speaking of birds........
This is an Ojibwe Spirit Bird
Always superb craftsmanship.
Thanks Buzz.

I know, I need to clean it. Haha
Excellent time lapse photography - the plants have done extremely well.
Looks very 'homey', to a fish anyway. (smile)
I like the rock setup! Very nice.
Thanks. I made them out of River rock.
No Placo?
Your Tank looks like a 55. hard telling with a pic.
These pre dinosaurs stabilize your tank.
I may have exaggerated pre-dinosaur. No reason to waste your time discrediting me....You know.

I actually thought it was funny.

The tank cleaners are great to have when you have an aquarium. They help keep the tank clean and the ick from getting out of hand.

I don't know what they are. At first I thought an Oriole.

Thanks. I just looked up the Oriole and see the difference. The beaks for one.

That would be most welcome and interesting.

I'm all birded out, but here's a couple of other creatures I encountered while climbing the sacred Buddhist Emei Mountain:
Doggone Buzz, how did you manage to get a picture of my brother in law way over in China??.
I guess he's lucky. The wildlife on Mount Emei is protected, otherwise maybe he could've been cooked and eaten.
Speaking of Blue Birds.....
...of happiness?
Let's keep it rollin'!

What a beautiful blue sky as well.
Great shot!!!
Here is a bit different avian creation....
Stark and powerful!!!
Thanks Buzz. That's what I was going for.
Love the b&w.
Thanks Kavika.
Got a young mouse snatcher I see now and then in backyard.
I still don't see it. Cool pic though.

My new scooter. Less than 2 miles on the odometer.
I want a photo of you whizzing along North Shore Dr.
I don’t if it’ll be North Shore Dr, but I’ll get a cool one of me soon.
Look, up in the sky it's a bird, no it's a plane, No it's Evil Knevel Genius.
This landing is not going to be good.
OMG...that is just too funny, Kavika! Leave it to you to come up with name like that!
LOL! I think I'll do my best to leave both wheels on the road where they belong.
Get on your bad motor scooter and ride.
I wonder how many people remember Montrose.
That's a really bad song!
Too cool!!!
