New drive-in cinema opens in Shanghai

Chenshan Drive-in Cinema, a newly-opened drive-in cinema in Shanghai's Songjiang district, provides a new experience for movie-goers.

At a drive-in cinema, the audience members sit in their cars and listen to open-air movies through an FM radio channel while watching the movies on a giant screen, and the parking lot serves as the movie theater.

The new drive-in cinema is located in the No 2 Parking Lot in the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden and is Shanghai's first drive-in cinema that integrates culture and tourism.

It screens the latest movies just as regular cinemas do.

Since its opening on Jan 23, the Chenshan Drive-in Cinema has become a gathering place for night owls, and the new way of watching movies has attracted many young people.

The drive-in cinema is equipped with two laser projectors in its projection room, and two large all-metal screens, which are 10 meters high and 20 meters wide, allowing for two films to be screened at the same time.

The movies are shown after dark amidst the beautiful nighttime scenery of the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden.

Compared with traditional cinemas, the viewing experience of open-air drive-in cinemas is more private. In front of the giant screen, the car is like a movable and independent private room. No matter if you are snacking on sunflower seeds, drinking cola, or chatting with family members or friends, it will not affect the viewing experience of others at all.

The Chenshan Drive-in Cinema also plans to open different spaces such as leisure areas and catering areas, and make use of its screen resources and venue advantages to carry out extensive and in-depth cooperation with other cinemas, car clubs, car 4S shops, and film and television enterprises, media advertising, and fashion catering in the city, as well as provide diversified one-stop services such as film and television shooting, outdoor festivals, extended training, event broadcasting, product releases, live broadcasts, test drives, car shows and so on.

Drive-in cinemas enjoy many advantages over ordinary movie theatres. When people drive their own cars to an indoor movie theatre in big cities like Shanghai, the first problem that is likely to occur is that it will be difficult to find a place to park, or that parking fees will be expensive. However, customers do not need to worry about any of this in outdoor drive-in cinemas.

The largest benefit the audience gets from drive-in cinemas is that it provides them with a more comfortable environment. As people are all sitting in their own cars, they can do whatever they like, such as chatting with friends or making  phone calls, without disturbing other people or being disturbed by others.

Wow!!! Talk about retro.  Actually I think this was a really good idea at this time because the people here may well prefer being distant from others, and there are other advantages mentioned in the article.  I couldn't tell if there were speaker stands between the parking spots but if there aren't any I would assume there is a way to pick up the sound using the cars' radios because of the advances in electronics since the kind of drive-in that I used to go to was a long time ago.

Some of the best memories from my childhood were at now long closed drive-ins.

It was a great place to take a date to, because it was a great place to neck.  I can still remember watching Rock Around the Clock starring Bill Haley and the Comets there and also Jailhouse Rock

Ah, the memories.
