I woke up this morning and was at my computer at about 6:30 a.m. The first thing I normally do is check my regular email, and don't start making my breakfast until a little after 7. I read in Canada's Global News, which I read every morning, two of the stories about young women dying, one found in a walk-in oven in a Walmart, and the other pierced by a swordfish while surfing. Because there are two stories I can only post SEEDED CONTENT, author and posting image for the first story but will post the url, author and image with the second one. Halifax Walmart worker was found dead inside bakery oven, police confirm
An investigation is underway tonight into the tragic death of a Walmart employee in Halifax over the weekend. And while officials are keeping the details under wraps for now, Global News has confirmed some key details about the incident. Ella MacDonald has the latest.
A Walmart employee who was found dead at a Halifax store on Saturday night was discovered inside a walk-in oven in the bakery department, according to police.
Halifax Regional Police (HRP) are also imploring the public to be sensitive when sharing information online, and to think of the impact it can have on the victim’s family and colleagues.
“We urge the public to be mindful of sharing speculative information on social media,” HRP said in a Tuesday release.
First responders were called to the Walmart store on Mumford Road at around 9:30 p.m. for a report of a “sudden death.” The store was evacuated and has remained closed since.
A spokeswoman for the province’s labour department said a stop-work order has been issued for the bakery and “one piece of equipment” at the Walmart store.
The employee was a 19-year-old woman, and had recently moved to Canada from India. Members of the local Sikh community said they are devastated by the loss.
“It’s very sad for us, for her family as well, because she came for a better future and she lost her life,” said Anmolpreet Singh, with the Maritime Sikh Society.
The society is meeting to see how they can best support the family. Meanwhile, police said their investigation is ongoing.
“It is important to note that the investigation has not yet reached a point where the cause and manner of death have been confirmed,” HRP wrote in the release, adding that the investigation is “complex and involves several partner agencies.”
Nova Scotia’s medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death, and the province’s Department of Health and Safety is taking part in the investigation.
Walk-in ovens, also referred to as cabinet or batch ovens, allow for curing, drying or baking in batches using wheeled racks or carts. They are often found in large-volume bakeries in places such as supermarkets and big-box stores.
In a statement, Walmart Canada said the company is heartbroken and their thoughts are with the woman’s family. They directed all further questions to police, and added that 24/7 virtual care and grief counselling was being made available to staff.

An Italian woman died last week after she was impaled by a swordfish bill into her chest while surfing in Indonesia .
In tributes to 36-year-old Giulia Manfrini, her loved ones have called her death a “freak accident.”
Manfrini was surfing in the waters of the Mentawai Islands Regency when she was impaled by the swordfish, the acting head of the Mentawai Islands’ Disaster Management Agency, Lahmudin Siregar, told local media.
Siregar said Manfrini was “unexpectedly” struck by the swordfish’s long, pointed bill while off the coast of Sumatra. He told the state news agency Antara that the impact caused a wound two inches (about five centimetres) deep.
Manfrini reportedly signalled for help and was brought to a local medical centre by two witnesses who also performed first aid. She did not survive. Her official cause of death has not yet been released.
The resort where Manfrini was staying at the time said she died in a “sad accident while surfing one of the friendliest waves in the region.”
The statement from Hidden Bay Resort Mentawais said Manfrini died “almost immediately” and there was “nothing we could do.”
Manfrini’s body is being repatriated with the resort’s support, the company said.
Manfrini was a co-founder of the U.K.-based company Awave, a travel agency centred around surfing.
In a post to social media, Manfrini’s business partner said she suffered a “freak accident” but “died doing what she loved, in a place that she loved.”
“Unfortunately, even with the brave efforts of her partner, local resort staff and doctors, Giulia couldn’t be saved,” co-founder James Colston wrote.
Colston called Manfrini the “lifeblood” of the company and said she will be remembered for her “infectious enthusiasm for surf, snow and life,” as well as her “smile, laugh and endless Stoke.”
Fabio Giulivi, the mayor of Manfrini’s hometown, Venaria, said their community was “shocked” by news of Manfrini’s death, and is now left feeling “powerless.”
Giulivi sent well wishes to Manfrini’s family on behalf of the entire city.
Swordfish attacks are extremely rare , research suggests, but are not entirely unheard of. It is unclear if this swordfish attacked Manfrini, or if she surfed into the animal.
As the name implies, a swordfish’s bill has incredibly sharp edges like its namesake weapon. The species uses its bill to catch food by slashing side to side to cut apart prey, or likely for defence.

If any new information about the Walmart store death is posted I will post a comment here with it, because this is quite a mystery. For a long time, I wondered about walk-in freezers, and never knew about walk-in ovens until now.. What I wondered about them was that if the door were closed with someone inside, could the door be opened from the inside, because if not, it's a death trap. I would hope that they could be opened from the inside even if the doors were LOCKED from the outside.
As for the surfer death, whenever something like this happens, I think that nature is getting even with us for what we have been doing to the planet, destroying the environment.
We have had friends injured many times from fishing for sharks and Swordfish or Sailfish.
We took the risks and injuries in stride because we were the asses (aggressors).

Yes but not fatally. You risk bringing the fish into the boat and getting injured
or hanging the trophy over the side threatening to break lines or equipment and losing the fish.
Sails and fins can cause deep cuts esp swordfish and sailfish.
Sharks are quite capable of biting someone behind them when it's life or death for them.
It's probably safer teasing alligators.
I've been out deep-sea fishing only once in my life - off the Kona coast of "The Big Island" of Hawaii, and the only big fish I even saw was the Mahi Mahi I caught which I and my travelling companions ate for supper that evening, but over the years I've spent a LOT of time in Florida, and never even saw an alligator.
Another strange thing we have in common. I caught a Maui Maui off the coast of NJ about 53 miles off shore in the Gulf Stream.
Took it home and did not share it with anyone when I cooked it.

I just googled alligators, and discovered that there are two types of Alligators: The American Alligator Alligator mississippiensis which lives in the South-Eastern part of the U.S.
And this is interesting-- The Chinese Alligator Alligator sinensis which, according to Wikipedia, lives in "Eastern China"!
Of course China is a very large country, so if you've never seen one in "Eastern China". you probably have only been to a different part of "Eastern China"?

The Chinese alligator currently is found in only the Yangtze River valley and parts of adjacent provinces [ 20 ] and is extremely endangered, with only a few dozen believed to be left in the wild.
Far more Chinese alligators live in zoos around the world than can be found in the wild. Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in southern Louisiana has several in captivity in an attempt to preserve the species. Miami Metro Zoo in Florida also has a breeding pair of Chinese alligators.
Wow!!! That's news to me. Been here more than 18 years and never heard of it before. Checked it out and discovered that they're an endangered species, hardly any compared to America, and located only in the lower Yangtze River (near the ocean) in the far east of China.
Handling big fish is always a dangerous time. A friend of mine brought a Tuna into the boat and they are nothing but muscle and flop around over a 100 lb tuna slammed into his legs and broke both legs.
I can’t count the number of times that I’ve cut out fish hooks from peoples hands arms, face.
Well, as I said above, I've deep-sea fished only once, but that doesn't mean I know some people could have a problem with fishhooks, but I would think it would happen more often with fly-fishing when the hook is flipped around than for still-fishing, which is what I always did.

Yep, I believe it went like this "Oh what a bonzer of a ray, while they should be left alone if I approach slowly and cautiously I should be oka....GAAAK!"
It's kind of a scary way to be killed. I stopped going into ocean waters over my waist after I watched "Jaws". I've since been told that even that's too far. No problem now, I don't think I'll ever see an ocean again.
That movie was very well done. If their goal was to terrify people they did an excellent job.

LOL, never did scuba dive, but I snorkeled in Hawaii and watched the most fantastic colourful fish I'd ever seen.

I never thought about sharks when I was in Hawaii, but that was a few years before the movie Jaws was released.

As of 7 hrs ago police have released nothing new about the circumstances of this case

That's what they did on October 7th. They were instructed to be especially vicious. First they put a baby in a microwave and kept the parents alive so they could hear it screaming. Then they tortured the parents. mass raped any women present, and then slowly murdered them all. And they wore Go Pros on their head so they could record everything and post it online.

I may have fished once when I went camping with my Uncle in The High Sierras (wonderful mountains in Southern California. One of the things we were going to do is go fishing for Trout in a stream. But it was so long ago (I was in my early teens) I don't remember if I actually did go fishing.
Yeah, maybe you just watched your uncle fish and fantasized doing it too - now you might remember the fantasy.
Actually there was only one time that I remember I went fishing-- and an exciting type of fishing it was.
I went surf-casting (standing on the shore,even wading into the waves a bit.Then casting out into the waves).
Much of the sport consists of sitting on a chair on the shore, waiting-- for the fish to come in. Sometimes you could go to the beach and there were none all day. (This could be several days in a row).
Sometimes you don't want to bother-- so you don't go to the beach for a day or two. Or go and do other things (Beach Volleyball-- a wonderful sport-- was very popular nearby..)

But when the fish come in-- you know it.
Usually there'll be a Seagull or three that fly by every so often. But the thing to do is look out over the ocean. When the fish are coming in, suddenly there's s huge swarm of Seagulls a distance out-- flying in a circle and occasionly diving. (They are catching these small fish).
Usually the school of small fish move to shallow water-- I've heard they are trying to escape a large number of larger fish that are chasing them.
Then it gets interesting. You merely cast into what looks like the center of the school of fish-- and there are lots of them in a small area. Every time I cast out as soon as the lure hit the water I got a strike. Everything was moving so quickly I didn't waste time taking off the Stainless Steel leader with the hook and the fish attached. To save time I cut the line, attached another steel leader and lure, and cast out again immediately.
Within a few minutes I had caught five fish!* (Then they moved out as quickly as they came in).

* They were all "Blues" (Bluefish, IIRC about 2-3 lbs each).
There are runs of two types of fish in that area -- Blues & "Stripers' (Striped Bass).
(You don't need a steel wire for Stripers, only for the Bluefish)

Then what? Did you "catch and release" or did you cook and eat them. We always ate the bass that I caught - fileted and pan fried them.
We kept two which we cooked and ate (I was in a group "summer share" house.). The person who cooked them was experienced at fishing and cooking fish. But I was surprised-- they really didn't taste that good. (The Strriped Bass in that area, OTOH, are supposed to be very tasty)
There were a fair number of people who were watching the fishing-- we gave the other 3 away. (I've heard they're best filleted and cooked soon after catching).
Yes, that's right. At my lakeside chalet I would catch the fish in the morning, then clean and filet them, and then pan-fry the filets in butter for lunch.

They are vicious, and have sharp teeth. That's why you can't attach the lure directly onto the fishing line. Rather, you have to use a stainless steel leader between the (nylon) line and the lure. (IIRC it was 18" long).
This was on a narrow "Barrier Beach" island. On the other side of the island was a bay. I never went fishing in the bay but we used to go claming-- and people used to make some very delicious recipes with stuffed clams.
I also had a Sailfish docked on a small pier on the bay side of the Island.had great fun sailing around the bay.

The vast majority of NT members are Americans. However, since even Trudeau's ministers are deserting him it might not be too long before there will be one.

Actually, the only new information released seems to be that the oven door cannot be locked.
The whole matter makes me speculate on a few possibilities, and few methods to prevent such a thing from happening IF it were accidental.
For example, same as buildings should have, the door should have an inside push-bar, capable of unlocking, if it WERE locked, to enable exit. It should have a really obvious button inside to set off an alarm throughout the store and its offices, even washrooms. Every staff member should upon starting their employment, be trained to know those emergency alarm/escape methods and procedures for rescue from outside.
But there are a couple of possibilities for this to have happened, and one of those is worse than the other.
Although it was indicated that the door could not be locked, perhaps it could not be opened from the inside, and she was unaware of that. And the oven was relatively soundproof so her screams could not be heard, or else nobody was close enough to hear them if they could. Maybe she made the mistake of turning on the oven thinking she would be inside for only a moment and the door closed and her clothes got caught on something. Maybe she was inside and someone did not know and closed the door and she couldn't open it. One indication of what happened would be if her body was found beside the door or not, because the second possibility could be murder.
Maybe the reason nobody heard her, or even knew she was inside, was because she was murdered with her body left inside the oven, and then the murderer turned the oven on to roast her body so the signs indicating whether it was murder would be obliterated. There is a political fight between Canada and India going on now because of Indian agents murdering Sikhs in Canada, and she was a Sikh.
Maybe we will simply never know what the truth is.

The Sikhs are indigenous to the Punjabi state, in Northern India. IIRC it borders Pakistan and Kashmir. The Sikh religion has a lot in common with Hinduism, but there are differences. (It is not an Indian sect but rather a distinct religion).
I used to go to an Indian restaurant occasionally. On Sundays lots of Indians (Desi Indians, not Najaho or Ojibwe) would come to this restaurant. The woman all dressed up in traditional Indian clothes (Saris,etc) but interestingly the men all worse western clothing. (It was also true of little kids-- little girls wore Saris, the boys wore western clothes!)
There were a few men who wore turbins, but most didn't. That's how you can recognize a Sikh-- they dress like Hindus, but Sikhs always wear turbins. Also they wear a Kirpan, a very small sword which has some religious significance.
There are a lot of Sikhs in Western Canada.
Here's the problem: there are a few SIkhs who are very militant, and want to suceed from India-- they want the state of Punjab to beome an independent Sikh country. Of course the Indian gov't doesn't want that. IIRC some of the extremists on both sides have been violent.
I don't remember all the details. But I think some militant Sikhs from Punjab (India) went to Canada to agitate and get the Sikhs in Canada to join their cause-- and the Indian gov't sent one or more agents to Canada to stop the Sikhs.
I think the Sikhs are generally very peaceful-- and the ones living in Canada are quite happy there and have no desire to go back to India to live.
Although many go back occasionally to visit relatives living in Punjab.
I used to love Indian food but have never been anywhere near an Indian restaurant since I came to China. The only exception is getting some pita bread from a baker in a small kiosk down below my building, but he didn't last long there.

I also like Indian food. There was an very inexpensive place nearby. I saw their licenses on the wall-- they were mostly named "Mohammed"-- I thought they must've been Pakistani immigrants, not Indians.
But then I realized they couldv'e been Indian Muslims.(Although India is mostly Hindu, they have one of the biggest Muslim populations in the world).
And India has a YUGE population.
I believe Indian food is pretty much the same as Pakistani. Although Indians won't eat beef-- cows are sacred. They do eat Pork.
And of course Muslims eat beef-- but don't eat Pork.
Oh I forgot to mention-- many Indians are Vegetarian, so they don't eat any animals. (Although unlike Vegans, they can eat animal products, like Milk, Mango Lassis, Cheese, etc). And Yoghurt!
I think there are a lot of Sikhs in British Columbia. IIRC they are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants, Initially at times they faced some nasty discrimination but I believe they are more widely accepted now.
The reason I know a bit about Sikhs is that about two years ago I took a course--online (Using Zoom). One of the women I met was a Sikh living in Canada, Then she got married and posted a video of her wedding-- very traditional. And IIRC Punjabi weddings last three days! (Women have 3 bridal gowns-- a different one for each day!) They are very ornate,
There is a ceremony where some of the other women there use Henna and make designs on the bride's hands and arms. (And maybe neck and face, I ferget).
And of course there's lots of dancing-- to very loud traditional Indian music!
Buddhists eat anything, and since I live with a Buddhist, think of Rob Reiner's mother in the movie When Harry Met Sally said "I'll have what she's having."
We eat a lot of yoghurt as well.

Yoghurt is generally considered a "superfood" (in addition to being a good source of calcium of course-- it has "friendly bacteria:. In your digestive system, bacteris actually increase your immune system.
Plain is best-- because in fruit Yoghurts, in addition to adding a little fruit the manufacturers add lots of sugar! If you want fruit Yoghurt the best thing to do is buy plain yoghurt--- and add the fruit yourself!
In Ayurveda, Yoghurt is considered a "cooling food"-- a useful quality in India which mainly has a hot climate. Fruits are also generally considered to be "cooling".
Hence the popular "Mango Lassi"
Plain yoghurt is exactly what we eat, and sometimes I add a sliced-up banana. However, sometimes I cheat a little and add a spoon of blueberry or raspberry jam.
I don't remember ever eating mangos until I came to China, and they sure are delicious.
