Trudeau flies to Florida to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago: Source
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has flown to Florida to meet with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Global News has learned.
The trip comes days after Trump threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico unless the two countries stop migrants and illegal drugs from crossing the border.
Flight data showed the plane regularly used by the prime minister for travel landed in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Friday evening, which is the closest airport to Mar-a-Lago.
Global News has learned Trudeau is staying overnight in West Palm Beach and will fly back to Canada on Saturday morning. He is not staying at Mar-a-Lago.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc is also in attendance, Global News has also learned.
The Prime Minister's Office did not publicly confirm the meeting with Trump and it did not appear on Trudeau's itinerary for Friday.
2:01 Ottawa, premiers seek unified approach on Trump tariffs
Trudeau and Trump spoke on the phone Monday evening after the U.S. president-elect made the tariff threat on social media.
The prime minister also convened an emergency meeting with the country's premiers at their request on Wednesday to talk about the tariffs.
Following the meeting, the premiers and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said they had agreed on a "unified" approach to addressing the issue, including economic risks and the border security concerns Trump raised.
Freeland and LeBlanc, who co-chair the cabinet committee on U.S.-Canada relations that was revived after Trump's electoral victory, said there were opportunities to work with the U.S. on border security and concerns about China.
At a press conference in Prince Edward Island earlier Friday, Trudeau says he believes Trump's tariff threats should be taken seriously.
"One of the things that is really important to understand is that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out," Trudeau told reporters in Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island. "There's no question about it.
"Our responsibility is to point out that, in this way, he would be actually not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, he'd actually be raising prices for American citizens as well and hurting American industry and businesses."

As a Canadian I'm humiliated that the "pussy" runs to pay homage to a man who has threatened to contravene the Canada-US-Mexico trade agreement by weaponizing tariffs against a good neighbour. Did he fly in the passenger cabin or was this his special seat?
Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico had the balls in dealing with Trump that Trudeau doesn't. His father would have hit Trump back and no way would he have run to kowtow before the new Emperor of America.
He needs a media distraction.
I would say you need a cat.
He did go to point out the pitfalls of imposing tariffs on Canada, which I don’t see as nothing more than trying to reason with Trump (a waste of time in my opinion).
Meanwhile Canada is complying a list of products to put Canadian tariffs on that will be like the last time they will hit at the states that are big supporters of Trump.
Yes, Trump beating his chest like a gorilla is going to cost Americans a lot of money they normally would not have to spend. I've seen the list from the last time. It takes quite a while to read through it.
It would be irresponsible for a national leader to ignore threats from the most powerful nation in the world. We don't know what they're saying to each other.
I know that the EU is preparing contingency plans.
Trudeau doesn't inspire confidence, but let's not condemn him just yet.
Yes. We don't know if he went to kiss his ring or to deliver an ultimatum.
An ULTIMATUM? You mean like we're going to burn your White House like we did a couple of centuries ago?
No an ultimatum like "If you impose these tariffs we are going to impose tariffs on American goods coming north of the border and disrupt your cross border trade, which is extensive."
Is there any truck traffic from Washington State to the Alaska panhandle?
I am not sure.
When I lived in Seattle, there was a good deal of maritime trade following that route.
I do know that automobile manufacturers do (or at least they used to) a lot of cross border trading in the NY to Quebec/Ontario region. A tariff would mess all of that up.
Are you thinking about what toll Canada could charge those trucks?
Of course.
Mexico pays for the wall.
America pays for the road... and also the railroad, the maritime infrastructure, ....
If push really comes to shove, it'll be interesting to see who really needs whom.
Actually, I can't wait to see what China is going to do this time. After all, when a retaliation wasn't good enough the first time, what does a nation that has been harmed again do then, eh? China will react slower and more carefully, because after all, "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."
Now that I think of it, when Trump raises tariffs around the world, harming other nations, where do you think the harmed nations are going to turn to?
Trump is a known quantity, this time. When he says tariffs, other countries have no option but to take him seriously. They have a couple months to list the most vulnerable sectors, and those belonging to major Trump donors.
Tesla.... America is a big agricultural exporter. It's gonna be ugly.
As I said, I'm really looking forward to seeing what that asshole is going to cost the American people. It will probably be the first act of the circus.
I have a mental image of Xi giggling.
