Water Wars: Is the World's Water Running Out?

Written by Marq de Villiers, Published July 31, 2001

Water is as vital as air. But we can no longer take water for granted. Already more than one billion people are living in conditions of extreme water stress. Why are deserts spreading? What effects will climate change have on rainfall and water tables? How is pollution affecting the global water supply? Will water wars erupt in the twenty-first century? Marq de Villiers examines how industrialisation and pollution are affecting the quality and supply of the world's water, and he reveals the international struggle for dominance over the world's water resources. With the heart and mind of an explorer, Marq de Villiers takes us to both the rim and centre of the world on a journey into the life source of this planet. It is a story of the vainglorious and often brutal attempt to control and harvest this vital resource, a world of political and military intrigue, where whole cultures stand threatened and where climate change and over-population add tinder to an already explosive situation. This is a book that will change the way we understand the role of water in our lives.

Marq de Villiers was my client, and I was there when he presented this new book of his to the press and public.  IMO what he had to say albeit a quarter of a century ago, just from his book's title if nothing else, is what is becoming even more frightening these days because of three facts:

1.  20% of the world's fresh water is in Canada

2.  What you see happening in the USA:

     Lake Mead, Nevada and Arizona

.

     Great Salt Lake, Utah

.

     The Colorado River

     and there are more....

3.  Trump thinks he can benefit America by taking over nearby lands and facilities - Greenland, Canada, the Panama Canal.

There might well be "Water Wars" in the near future.

After the winter storms/snow/rain Mead and Powell have increased their level substantially along with the great Salt Lake.

No, all the water on Earth has been here for millions of years.

Wow!  And I thought it was on Mars.  The point I was making was about the terrible droughts in Africa.

I just read on Canada's Global News that Trump had told Newsome that Canada's water would have been able to be used to douse the fires.  He was referring to the Columbia River, that flows from the mountains in Canada to the USA and between Washington and Oregon flows out to the sea.  Scientists have indicated that the infrastructure required to divert the flow to California would be impossible.  Although Canada can have no complaint about it because it already flows into the USA, just the thought of looking to Canada for water is one small step towards Water Wars.
