During the recent cold wave, rime formed in the mountains of Guidong county, Hunan province, creating a stunning white winter landscape.
These ice crystals are formed when supercooled water droplets in fog rapidly freeze on cold surfaces.

Beautiful to look at, but I'm glad I'm only looking at photos of it rather than being there. Although I was born in and grew up in the Buffalo Snow Belt and winter stretched from mid-November to mid-April I think that the only thing I miss now is the sight of the sparkling crystal paradise created on a clear freezing day when the sun shines on the ice-covered leafless tree branches.
