A cloudy day photo-walk through Sichuan University’s new campus
Today my wife and I strolled through the new campus of Sichuan University located in the south of Chengdu City, in Sichuan Province of Western China. It was, as seems to be usual when I want to take photos, a misty grey-sky day. I am trying out a new camera today for the first time. It is an Olympus digital VG-130 pocket-size, 14 MPX and a 5X zoom which is the equivalent on a standard 35mm camera of 26mm to 130mm. I had 24mm, 50mm, 100mm and 135mm lenses for my old Canon F1 35mm film camera so I have a comfortable familiarity with that range.
I had bought that camera for my wife’s daughter who is studying in Germany, but she prefers using the camera on her Apple iphone 5s which is more convenient for her. My camera developed a “purple” problem, so she gave me the camera. As it happens, I think I like the quality of the photos this camera produces better than mine which originally cost twice as much as hers but is only 7.1 MPX and a 3X zoom.
There were almost no students around because it is the Ching Ming Jie holiday weekend. That means in English Tomb Sweeping Day, or the day that families go to the grave of their ancestors and clean the grave site, and burn fake money and candy as a gift to the deceased to use in the afterlife.
We spent most of our time in the beautiful park-like and wooded area of the campus. Because it is a new campus the buildings are all modern – no traditional touches to them, as there is in the original downtown campus. The campus is quite huge, and save for the wooded areas it is quite flat so many students have bicycles there to go between buildings for their courses.
1. Just inside the main gate we walked past this big fountain which puts on a display similar to the one in front of the Las Vegas Bellagio Hotel. I have to learn to post videos, so I can show that kind of action happening.
2. That is my wife admiring the view. There are many more palm trees here because we are now a lot farther south than where we lived previously in Zhengzhou City.
3. The gardens are quite beautiful, although most of the Spring flowers have gone.
4. A typical building
5. And another
6. Now we head into the wooded area of the campus.
7. Most of the flowering trees have already lost their blossoms, but there are still a few.
8. Does anyone know Donovan's song: "Yellow is the colour of my true love's hair, in the morning, when we rise...."?
9. I would like to know what's at the top of that tower.
10. A bridge not so far
11. There still are some Spring flowers blooming
12. And a few more - pink is very common colour here
13. This is my favourite shot of the day
14. My wife holding pink flower. At this spot we saw some fish jumping.
15. The big Chinese characters say "Sichuan University".
16. White flowers for a change, in front of a bamboo forest.
17. A view from a different angle
18. Back to more buildings
19. This is a huge round stadium.
20. More buildings as we start heading out
21. The last photo I took today, and I'm tired from the long walk.
