Talking to the Dead

On Ambivalent's suggestion, I just finished the first book in the Fiona Griffiths series.

Good book.

There's a good "police procedural" story, of course. Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths is just one among many in a team; author Harry Bingham does a good job of showing how new data are added by investigators other than our heroine.

And, also of course, there's suspense and action. Not a great deal -- it wouldn't be appropriate in this kind of story. But when it comes, it is hard and fast.

All that is well and good, but the feature of the book is Fiona. From the first page of this first-person, largely-present-tense narrative, we know that there is something "off" about DC Griffiths. As the book progresses, we learn that she is very odd indeed, struggling to fit into the real world, but also trying to be herself, a person who doesn't quite fit.

Recommended.
