Buzz does Beijing and Environs - December 200
Looking back to the first tour I took in China, I'm amazed at how clear the sky was. When I was in Beijing to renew my Canadian passport 9 years later the smog was thick and most people wore breathing masks. This group of photos was taken during a guided tour a teacher colleague of mine and I took in Beijing and nearby tourist sites, around 4 months after I arrived in China. Some of these photos I may have posted on NV or NT years ago, but many, especially those with me in them, are newly posted.
1. On a street in downtown Beijing. I was careful not to stand in front of a tank when I was in Tianamen Square.
2. The Emperor's Throne Room in the Forbidden City.
3. The Lesser Temple of Heaven. Here the Emperor would pray for a good harvest.
4. Entrance to the Ming Tombs
5. Turning the Prayer Wheel at the Lama Temple
6. An artificial lake at the Emperor's Summer Palace
7. Years before I even dreamed I would ever travel to the Orient, a client gave me a beautiful antique framed silk embroidery of this marble "boat". I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the real thing in the lake at the Summer Palace - I had never realized that the embroidery was of something that was real.
8. The Great Wall looked like a snake slithering over the mountains.
9. I really don't remember where this was - it could hae been at the Ming Tombs.
