Reasearch Assistance Requested

I love this photograph; it reminds me of several paintings, one by American genre painter, Jerome B. Thompson and another by French artist, Millait.

From the subject and caption (in German?), I get "Harvest" ("ernten") but I cannot decipher the rest of the caption. More than anything, I need to know the location Germany, the American Midwest the clothing and the buildings are probably a clue, but I don't know.

4783_discussions.jpg The Caption (as may be evident, I cleaned/restored the image fairly well -- if only I knew where the photo was taken. The date is anywhere from 1903 - 1915.)

Any comments, ideas or ID's much appreciated.

There is a city named Mylau, Germany .

A lot of German towns, the people lived in town and went outside the town to work in the fields.

Most European towns used that system, Dowser. It carried over to the East Coast colonies because it was useful for protection. By the time the Midwest was settled, however, the practice was changed to living away from the town and on your own land, so it's not likely to be in that area.

My son looked at the word Bei and concluded that it can be translated as "in the" or "of the", which could, due to the differences in construction between German and English, be taken to mean "at" or "near" or "in". The clothing seems to be in the European style of that time. By that time American farmers would likely be wearing bib overalls. It would seem to be a harvest scene just outside the small town of Mylau, Germany, a town located in Saxony, not too far from Prague and South of Berlin.

Go to Dowser's link to Mylau, Germany. Click on the long panorama of Mylau, then click on the image and enlarge it. Very similar landscape and tall smokestacks. The buildings are similar, too. Good detective work, Dowser.

That works -- I could not make out the word "Mylau" in the handwriting. The photographer was in Germany and throughout Europe in 1903!

Many thanks Dowser, TTGA and Grump - I owe you each!
