The Gap Credit Card and Gap Credit Card Rewards.. Why you might want to consider it.

These days shopping for clothing is more than just getting a bargain, it's also about getting good basics that will last. One of the best stores to do this in is the Gap. But if you think that the Gap is out of your price point, you should consider the Gap credit card. Here's why. The Gap credit card can be used in any of the Gap family of stores, 5259_discussions.jpg (Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta , or Piperlime) and by using it, you'll find yourself spending less money on top quality clothing. You'll be actually spending less money on clothing, than you would at Target or even Khols, Let me explain how.

First, as a thank you for opening a Gap card, you will receive 15% off your entire purchase. Do this on a Tuesday, and you will get another 10% off on top of that. (Every Tuesday Gap credit card owners get 10% off). Now purchase a sale items and you'll see big savings! And the Gap offers special sales every week to credit card holders. But that is just the beginning. Every time you shop, whether it's in the Gap, or getting gas or groceries, you gain Gap points. These points add up to actual dollars. It's easy to gain these points, since the Gap runs special periods where they will double your gap points on food, and triple them on gas. Don't mind getting emails from the Gap about specials, you get another 2000 point. Opt for paperless statements, another 500 points.

You also get these other benefits:

  • Free shipping within the U.S. for on line purchases
  • Free basic alterations on Banana Republic merchandise
  • Special access to additional sales
  • No annual fee

The point reward works like this. If you get the Gap Visa card, you will get 5 points for every dollar spent in the Gap or one of it's affiliate stores. You'll get 1 point for 1 dollar 5260_discussions.jpg spent in other stores, except during their special double or triple periods, which come about every other month. You will receive a $10 Gap buck for every 1000 points spent. This can be combined with other Gap bucks and and can be combined and used during any sale period plus the Tuesday 10% off savings, too!

So let me break it down for you, on a current purchase I just made.

I earned $30 gap bucks in a one month period during their double/ triple pointspecial period. I shopped on a Tuesday, to get the additional 10% off the entire purchase.

I bought two items, a sweater, regular price $39.95 and a pair of pants, regular price $44.95.

Sweater $39.95

Sale discount (40%) plus Tues 10% -$18.38

Percentage of $30 Gap bucks -$14.12

Final price of sweater $7.45

Pants $44.95

Sale discount (40%) plus Tues 10% -$20.68

Percentage of $30 Gap bucks -$15.88

Final price of pants $8.39

Total cost of purchase $16.57

Total savings $69.06

Now that's what I call savings!

Just like with any credit card that offers "cash back" be savvy about how to maximize it's benefits. Here are some things to keep in mind. Try to use the card during their double and triple point periods. Points will also accumulate during a statement period, so if you buy something and don't want it, wait till after the statement period to return the item. And be sure to pay the card off not before it comes due and try to keep any balance to the return item so that you don't get slammed with fees.

Happy Savings from your NT Consumer Advocate!

This is true BF. But I am not advocating for spending money that you don't have. I am advocating maximizing the use of the money that you do have. Remember I am a CPA, and by definition, fiscally conservative.

LOL BF, Glad I can be of some help here! Of course no savvy consumer would ever accrue $80,000 in debt, by definition. Shopping junkies do.

It is actually a good thing to do. Keeping charge cards to a min will keep your budget in check. But having no credit cards will stop you from getting a mortgage, so too much of a good thing can actually be bad.

A good deal if you buy lots of clothing.

For others, with full closets and if you have a Fidelity account, you may want to consider the Fidelity AMEX card which provides 2% cash back for everything and anything.
