That's just ridiculous. I'd rather have a motorcycle any day.

to move the canopy raises to reveal a standing platform with no physical controls; the "driver" moves the vehicle by straddling the body and leaning, with the motion sensed by the windscreen.

Oh ... so it really is a "sort of" 4 wheel Segway .

I'm more confused than ever ... Still I do like the fact that it can tilt into a turn . It is a little like the Piaggio MP3 :

Petey, its an organ donor machine, I figure. If it only goes as fast as a Segway, it might be ok. If it will go 110, you're a gonner.

This Toyota concept makes more sense to me. At least you can sit down after a long day at the office and ride home in a comfy chair.

Ah, screw it. Public transportation is looking better all the time.

From what I've observed the only improvement to safety for a motorcycle type vehicle is to have tremendous high end rollout acceleration ... so you can accelerate away from danger .

Those were the 2003 concept mobility product . Get with the times ! Or better yet take the bus ...

I've seen a couple Piaggio, or something very similar, here in town. Pretty cool.

They are cool . There is a definite advantage to having the extra traction which comes with leaning into a curve with the extra wheel .Some roads are slippery especially when wet .

So ... you don't mind being the early adopter ? Confucious say "He who first drives an experimental concept car is candidate for experimental concept surgery" .

Perrie, I like it too..tho, not sure I'd want one. There are a lot of things that are cute that I wouldn't want. :P

If motorcycle gangs isn't enough, we're gonna have Segway gangs....and now this.

I'm still trying to figure out how they expect to accomplish this "lean" ...

A number of the newer cars have all wheel steering, motorcycles have "the lean" built-in.

But I'm guessing this will not be useful for drifting .

Indeed . But this has 4 wheels . Is it a motorcycle ?

I'd say so, with the rear and side training wheels, larger than the front one.

Leaning into a turn with 2 wheels on the same axle requires some unusual mechanical stuff :

Cool video!
We have been seeing something sorta like that the last coupla years mowing grass along roads. It is a three wheeled (same configuration with the One wheel up front) ditch cutter; but, whereas you normally would be clinching the seat with your ass-cheeks as it tilts, the cabin remains upright while the two back wheels that carry the mower-deck slant. Strange looking contraption for sure but I can see how it would be much safer.

Safer for sure. There was once an incident where the tractor turned over and fell on top of the man, pinning his whole bottom torso. He was in shock of course, and there were others around that tried to aid him. They fortunately knew that attempting to remove him without medical personnel would have been the wrong thing to do. A piece of machinery that functioned like Larry described, would have prevented that incident.

No doubt it is a safer design for the side of a hill . I wonder what the angular limits of tilt are for such a machine ...

The Piaggio doesn't seem like a high powered crotch rocket. I can't imagine that it would keep up with a hot bike on corners, much less a straight away. But, it is a cool little scooter.

piaggio story

Piaggio USA, Inc. is a subsidiary of Piaggio & C. S.p.A., based in Pontedera Italy. Since 1884 the Piaggio name has stood for innovation, quality and superior performance. The Company's rich history, which includes ship outfitting, railway construction and aviation, gave way to developing practical and accessible means of transportation for post-war Italy when the first Vespa motor scooter was designed in 1946.

As Europe's largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles, Piaggio is known throughout the world for their superior technology, craftsmanship and design. Piaggio's stylish and fuel-efficient line of motor scooters are the epitome of practical indulgence.
$8899 for their 500 cc scooter. Golly. I'm guessing that if you are not on a fairly flat surface, you might have some trouble with those three wheels and the tilting action.
I would prefer to have a gas tank between my knees that I could hold on to with my legs. Scooters like this always made me uncomfortable.

Off the top of my head I would not expect that to be a problem . As long as you're leaning into a turn or into a hill [if that's your surface ] gravity should push you straight into your seat . I haven't driven one of these but centrifugal force works wonders to stabilize a turn ...

However , a 500 cc 4 stroke is not especially powerful . So yes , this is still only a scooter .

Petey, I meant getting off on a dirt or sand trail, say in the mountains or out in the desert where there are fairly rough terrains. I don't think it would do well on the side of a dirt or sandy hill. It might go up or down the hill but it might work so well going sideways on a hill like a two wheel dirt bike would do easily. Maybe I'm not seeing the possibilities.

Good question and not sure. I'll have to do some research but I honestly don't know what the brand even is. I'll ask around and get back to ya.

Grump ,

I don't think it would do well on the side of a dirt or sandy hill.

OK . I don't think riding anything on the side of a sand hill would be a good idea . And the same could be said for a hill with loose dirt . A dirt bike works pretty well going up or down dirt hills , but sideways ? Why bother ?

Here is a similar [or identical ?] bike being driven off road . It appears to have no problems . [starting at 40 sec in ]
