1938, a much different time. No mass instant communications, no TV, fewer ''talking heads''. We knew nothing of space or whatwas there. No, today it probably couldn't happen. But, 75 years ago was a different time.
I can remember listeningto the record during acting class - then we listened to it 'bout 10 times before the instructor took the record away. So, we bought our own.
That's when we all fell in love with Citizen Kane - loved Orson - helluvan actor, writer - very serious drinker and smoker - but still married some of the most beautiful women in the world - Paola Mori, Rita Hayward and Virginia Nicholson. 1915 - 1985 - good life, great gifts - thanks Orson.
He directed and/or acted in some of the world's greatest films - classics now. He was truly a genius. You will note that as a sign of my respect for him when it comes to classic films, that my Classic Cinema group here (and previously on NV) uses his image as the avatar - a still of his face just having come out of the shadows, the first time you see him in the movie "The Third Man"
Hope this isn't off topic - but - Orson was a pure "D" genius and if his lifestyle had been a tad different, there is no telling what direction the movie industry would have gone under his longer tutelage.
Notice the pipe in the dude's mouth? I smoke one and get tickled to see many of the older photos with men and their pipes. How many do you see today, eh?
I understand that ever since that occasion, whenever there is a similarly "realixtic" broadcast of the nature they are required to provide announcements that it is a fabrication regularly through the program.
Citizen Kane was the worst movie ever. I remember having to watch it in high school. The teachers were all blowing bubbles of joy and admiration, as were some of my classmates. I thought it sucked gangrenous donkey dick. You guys are weird.
Most movie critics and best movie lists put Citizen Kane at the top of the list for many years. Whether you like a movie or not is a matter of personal taste unless you've been educated in film making wherein your personal taste could be adjusted somewhat.
Hey, I never put Citizen Kane at the top of my list either, even though it was a benchmark film that brought change to the whole industry. My favourite over the years has been Casablanca. Is there a film you like the most, Grump?

Yeah, maybe if I were better educated, I would appreciate it more.
To Kill a Mocking Bird is one of my favorites. Casablanca, too.
Grump, I didn't mean that as an insult. It's just that if you have studied film-making you look at movies with a different perspective. I love classic films, but I never studied film-making or fine arts at all. In fact, I've discovered that those who HAVE studied film-making seem to be more critical and enjoy movies less - sort of the bus-man's holiday thing.

I listened to this a while back. Fun and spooky stuff. Great for Halloween.

It sure was and in a way I think that it's an amazing thing that people took it as real. In a way it's a shame that, that moment is lost now.
It really is. Thanks for posting the broadcast.
I bet you say that to all the aliens that you meet!
1st,
All true! The man was extraordinary and lead an extraordinary life. Glad he could share them with us!
BTW, I would encourage all to read HG Wells book. It's really surprising how well it was translated onto the radio and then onto the big screen.

OMG - what a movie

How about this one, from Mars Attacks .
Too much of a good thing ?
Here in China it's said that the most superflous article of clothing is the brassiere.
Actually, a very good point, Robert. I have never realized that before.
LOL... they are talking about having 3 boobs above.. I wouldn't worry.
Got to say that although I never liked Citizen Kane, I could admire the technical achievements.
Mine is To Kill a Mocking Bird and Marty. Then I would have to say almost anything Hitchcock did.
I don't just like to look at them, I married one (who happens to be really nice to look at - see my avatar).
Yeah, maybe if I were better educated, I would appreciate it more.

BTW BUZZ!!!!!
Did you notice that you could watch the video?
My cat kills m ockingbirds ...

Yes, I could.
