Nemo's Story - Vietnam War Dog and the Thousands That We Left Behind - A Sad and Cruel Order by the US Military

In one of the saddest and cruel orders given in the U.S. Military. The War Dogs of Vietnam, were left behind as the US pulled out of Vietnam.

They had saved thousands of American lives, during their time in combat. They didn't desert their handlers. They stood side by side in intense combat and never wavered.

They gave their lives for us. Yet, the US Military decided, that they were excess equipment and left them behind.

There was a book written about this. Entitled, ''None Came Home''.

This is the story of one dog, Nemo, who did make it home. Nemo is a hero, but his thousands of fellow War Dogs fate, were far different than Nemo's.

Sadly, there is much to learn from these dogs. I wonder if we ever will.

After the blood that we spent, the billions of dollars wasted. The Military decided that it was to expensive and a difficult logistical problem to return the dogs to the US. So, the decision was made to leave them behind. NONE CAME HOME - A book well worth reading.

Yes, I certainly know how he feels BF.

According to the military, it was expensive and a logistical problem. Which I call BULL SHIT on. The were frickin idiots in my opinion. We should have left them behind, since the REMF, had no idea what it was like there.

I completely agree BF. They are soldiers and bear a great responsibility. They should be treated with the respect that they deserve. The bond between the handler/solider and the dog is one to be admired.

Things have changed since Nam for the better.

Dogs are sentient creatures. They have the same emotions we do - hope, loyalty, fear, love. This is heartbreaking in so many ways.

''This is heartbreaking in so many ways''..Yes it is Grump. Sadly, the Military saw them as excess equipment. Not as what they really were, Hero's and guardians.

Makes me wonder what happened to them. I would bet it wasn't something good.

Some were put down. Some went to the So. Vietnam army and the rest disappeared. No, it was not good Grump.

I know Buzz, does the same thing to me. I believe that their story should be told, so everyone knows that these animals/birds have done for us. And, in this case, ''nothing that we did for them''.

Gunny, there are now a couple of memorials, dedicated to war dogs. One is at Fort Benning Ga. and another at Lackland AFB.
