Saving pictures to CD
I'm expecting my new computer here any day but now in order not to lose the pictures I was able to salvage from m last disaster I want to save them to CDs. I have them in a single folder here but want to know if I have to save them one by one or if I save the folder would that allow me to get at them when I get done setting up the new system.
Ideas or comment please. Thanks

Tsula,
You can save the entire folder with no problem, as long as the size of the folder is below the size limit of the CD. For larger folders, use a DVD, which has more capacity. There are two ways to save pictures to a CD or DVD. One way sets them up so that they can be viewed on any DVD player and television combo. The disadvantage of this method is that the pictures are then locked in and the folder can't be changed later. The other method only lets them be viewed with a computer, but the file can then be handled like any other folder on a removable drive, much like using a flash drive. You can then copy the folder to your new computer, change it if you wish, and re-burn it to the disk. I prefer using a flash drive for these purposes. The flash drive is more durable and much less subject to damage; as well as having a lot more capacity and being easier to store. It is, however, more expensive than a CD; a suitable one costing maybe 10 or 15 dollars. Of course, one high capacity flash drive can easily store every file you're ever likely to have on your computer. It's surprising that a drive that's only about an inch and a half long can store everything on your computer, but that's because most of the size of the computer is taken up by equipment for manipulating memory or for cooling. The actual memory chip on the computer is very small compared to the size of the tower (not too much bigger than the memory chip on the flash drive).
RW, thank a bunch! I have some 1.4 Gb RW DVDs that I plan on using. I also have a stand alone hard drive with about 35 Gb free space and figured I would go that way too. Right now I am at war with MS because they are telling me that I can not reload my MS Office to the new one and ignoring that MS said in April because of their original restrictions that a user could reload Office to another computer every 90 days as long as the user owned both computers and deleted the program from the first before reloading to the second. Really rude people to deal with, too.
Far out, Raven. I never knew you could do it that way. I've used control and left click on each file before, but never tried to do all of them at once. Big time saver.
Indeed, I learned something here I wish that I had known early this morning!
Thanks, TTGA. I guess I going to have to make a run for Office Depot before the new system gets here. They are now saying that it will be here day after tomorrow!!
Strange this Chinese made system that is 7 months old had a USB port handling my keyboard failed this morning. Could not figure out what the heck happened except a small light on the keyboard lit up. I switched ports and was backin business again. I went to their tech support and all hey wanted to talk about was selling me a notebook. Answer any of my questions? Nope.
Because I am backtracking from Windows 8 to Windows 7 Pro I figured that if I were able to save only those files that I have almost daily activity on I would be better off. All of the other programs I will reload after I get done setting the thing up. The last thing that I am going to do with this error in judgment is run the restore function and take it back to the original settings. I understand that by doing this the hard drive will be scrubbed and W8 reinstalled. There's a guy here that works a lot with the neighborhood kids and I'll give it to him to give to some kid that can't afford a new computer. MS is really giving me a hard time about reloading MS Office so I am going to start looking at free office suites and see how that works out for me. Something in this system keeps going into my spreadsheets and deleting al of the formulae that I work out for the figures and I have to refigure them which is a real bear! I understand that some of them are not really all that bad either and the price is surely right. Not spending another 140 bucks to make Billy Gates any richer that's for sure! The delivery for my system has now been brought back to the 28th and it will get real quiet here while I try to get that put together and running. I do thank you folks for all of your good advice, too!~!
What's really weird RW is that I asked only about reinstalling after I got the new system. I went and looked at it today and the installation date had been changed from the March 8th when I originally bought and installed it to Sept 19th which is the date that I complained to MS about their rules! I have had the dumb program n this system for over 7 months not 1 week. Figure that one out. I also lost the copy of the email conversation that I had in my records too. This is too spooky for words.
I took it out of the port in the back of the computer and plugged it into one of the 2 ports that came with my monitor and I am golden for a while.'
Got a question: Today I started all of a sudden getting a message across the bottom of my screen for every site that I go to that says: Do you want to go to Analytics.js from a.sitemeter.com? Have you ever seen this and what the heck is it and how do I get rid of it? It just popped up today from nowhere. Very frustrating to have to cancel that, too.
Hey thanks, JFT, I'll look into it. Will it work with spreadsheet produced in Excel? I've got spreadsheets that I have been working on for years that are huge with hundreds of calculations that I converted from Lotus 123 which I had been using since it first came out in the mid 80s.
Just super! It looks like I won't have to look very far then. I get a 30 day trial period with office with my new system so during that period if MS won't allow me to reinstall the program I bought in March then I'm gone. I use Hotmail anyway so no real loss!
