The Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo made a catch of a foul ball last night that seems destined to go down with the all time baseball video highlights
Although the announcers on the video say it was ruled " no catch", the four umpires ended up having a conference and after a few minutes discussion the catch was called an "out".
Although it doesn't show on this video, I was watching the game on tv and the camera stayed with the woman with the ponytail closest to the wall, and the look on her face was priceless. It was like she could not believe what had just happened.
That catch was actually very dangerous. Maybe not to life and limb, but it would have been very easy for Rizzo to be injured on that play. Most players wouldn't have even climbed on the tarp for fear of getting injured.
That's one of the great things about baseball compared to other spectator sports, the dynamic of crowd interaction is truly one of a kind. Glad he got the out, it's well deserved; plus, he didn't even step on anybody that I could see.
Funny too, he ends up next to a fan in the stands wearing his jersey.
I saw that too, that's one play that fan will never forget. It was an amazing catch to say the least. I first saw it on CNN main stream news, so I knew, as soon as I read the headline, what play they were talking about..
Sort of. Depends how far you go. Personally I don't think it should have been an out. Close call I think.
6.05 A batter is out when
(a) His fair or foul fly ball (other than a foul tip) is legally caught by a fielder;
Rule 6.05(a) Comment: A fielder may reach into, but not step into, a dugout to make a catch, and if he holds the ball, the catch shall be allowed. A fielder, in order to make a catch on a foul ball nearing a dugout or other out-of-play area (such as the stands), must have one or both feet on or over the playing surface (including the lip of the dugout) and neither foot on the ground inside the dugout or in any other out-of-play area. Ball is in play, unless the fielder, after making a legal catch, falls into a dugout or other out-of-play area, in which case the ball is dead. Status of runners shall be as described in Rule 7.04 Comment.
He was standing on the top of the ledge with both feet when he caught the ball. I believe that is considered in play. Different ballparks have different ground rules though.
I would think he would have to throw the ball, which according to the rules is still a live ball as long as he still has a foot on the wall, back to a team mate to tag the batter out?
Then again he did fall into an out of bounds area and the rule says the ball is dead. Very confusing.
He caught it before he stepped off the rim of the stands, it was caught in play, fairly.
Once caught the out is recorded with the catch. now according to the rule, if his left foot had left the rim of the stands, it's no catch, out of play.
He even played it correctly, when an outfielder catches a ball and proceeds out of bounds while catching it, he must throw the ball back into the field of play before he re-enters it himself to record the out.
I loved that part John. She had the same look that my daughter gets whenever she meets a member of the Red Wings hockey team. It just screams "Oh my God, he actually touched me".
What the heck is happening with those guys? They are totally on fire.

I still think it was just a foul ball and not an out, because he did fall into an out of play area AFTER making the legal catch. IMHO the call was wrong by the Umps. Still, as Al Kaline supposdely once said to a reporter after when he was thrown out at 1st on a clearly blown call by the 1st base Ump in which he was safe: "I was out because the Umpire said I was. What I think doesn't matter anymore after that."
AHHHHHHHHHHMAZING!!!!!!!

I saw some ESPN guys saying it wasnt that great, but I don't agree. That is a very dangerous play for the player
- easy to get injured like that
Its no Ivan Calderon at Tiger Stadium, but its pretty good.
It is all fun and games till somebody loses their sense of humor.
I'll bet his agent about had a stroke.
Damn brother, that's a catch!
Am I the only Chicago born fan of the Cubbies on here?

Peruse the rules of baseball here .

No Idea 'bout the fan base.
I would have thought that the catch was in, barely, but anything subsequent to the stepping out of bounds would be ruled out of play...

Confusing rule.
Thanks for the clarification.
