They grow wild in many places and deer tend to chomp off the buds these plants bear large yellow, red, or orange flowers, each flower lasting only one day.
The erect structure are, well, just that! The male reproductive parts of the flower - the stamens - comprised of the anther (the "head") and the filament (the "shaft").
