Free photo editing software
When my old system committed suicidehere it took my photo edited program with it. The old man is on a safari in the internet jungle to find a replacement. I have downloaded a couple but they are so complex that I just took the dumb things off again. All I want to do is sharpen up the focus, and possibly crop them and fool a bit with the contrasts, which the other one did but I'll be hanged if I can remember what the name of it was.
Ideas or suggestions please. I am slowly but surely, thanks to the many suggestions which I have tried over the days, fixing this monster foisted off on us.I have not yet figured out how to make the in born security stop deleting some of my cookies which means I have to sign in each and every time I want to go to another site.
I am certainly remiss in extending my sincere gratitude to all of you for keeping me somewhat sane. tsula
I use Gimp 2.6-- don't get the Gimp 2.8, definitely get the free Gimp 2.6! It is a free download, and no matter where you find it, you'll get lots of bloatware that you have to go in and uninstall, but it's pretty good...
Helpful hint: Take a screen shot of your Add/Remove Software stuff, before you download it-- then, you'll have a list of what has been added that you didn't ask for and didn't want, so you know what to uninstall!
Thanks, Dowser. I downloaded that one and it was so complex that I took it right back off. What the heck, doesn't anybody do anything simple for us simple folk anymore. My add/remove list must be 3 pages long already.
I just noticed that you suggested 2.6 so I will go back and be sure that is the one I get this time!
I have used Gimp and liked it. It's free and it does all the simple things I needed like resizing for example. Actually I find the tools at photobucket do most anything I need done. I'm a neophyte of course, someone with greater demands might want more.
I've just ordered PhotoShop elements, because I got it on sale for $47.00-- the offer came because I just signed up and bought a web making program from Adobe. We'll see how IT works!
I've also used Photoscape, which is free. I liked it ok, but I needed more options...
I guess I need to look things over better, Wheel. Gonna check again. Thanks
John Russell , thanks, Tried that one too. In fact, basedon the write up, I downloaded that one first. It has so much baggage with it that I dumped it right away. I only want a program not the whole net. Ain't no such thing as a freebie any more. Thanks for the thought, though.
PhotoScape does not say that it is compatible with Windows 8, only W7 and XP. I think that W8 is the culprit in that a whole bunch of older programs are not supported.
tsula, I'm so very sorry! I tried!
Wish I knew of another one! Rebuilding a computer is hell. I've done it... I still have boxes of floppies!
I used to have a couple of articles about 2.6... If I can find them, I'll post them again! Love you, dear tsula!
That's funny! Well not funny but very familiar! I had tons of 3.5" floppies and suddenly the cd became the media of choice. I had bought them in bulk because I figured I would be needing them. I wound up with a couple hundred formatted floppies stored in the back of one of my closet and nothing for them to do when: In checking my field vision at my Ophthalmologists' I found that they used them for their records. Before the day was over I had trucked those little suckers to the office in a bunch of shopping bags. Made me feel good that they were not going to waste and he felt good enough to spring for a great dinner for the Bride and me! Great trade off! ((((Dowser))))
Great tradeoff! Mine are buried in a closet somewhere... I'll find them during spring cleaning, I hope!

Try ImageForge v 3.6, by a company called CursorArts. It really is a freebie, it's a 'loss leader' to get people interested in their 'high end' version; you can find it all over the place. A quick Google or bing search of 'imageforge' will give you at least a dozen spots to download it. It's been around since about 2004, so it runs on about everything from Win 98 to at least Vista (don't know about more recent Windows releases since my machine is older).
ImageForge also probablyhas more than you want/need, but it is very easy to use, does all the things you mentioned; alsohas good help/tutorial stuff, and you can easily ignore things you're not interested in or 'grow into' them at your convenience. Maybe important for you: if you don't like it, the Uninstall is very fast & easy and really does get rid of everything without any effect on your system.
Thanks a bunch, Jim Martin , I've never heard of them but that doesn't mean much considering that it is me we're talking about here. Sounds like my Google is gonna get a workout, thanks to you!! tsula
No problem, t, glad to help out. I plug ImageForge a lot, simply because it IS a true freebie & a quality program. (Besides, they kick you out of the Hippies Union if you turn down something free.)
If you decide to give it a try, please feel free to message me here for any help I can offer. I've been using it since it came out, and for a casual user ImageForge will do everything that PhotoShop does (except suck out your bank account).
One word....
BitTorrent.
Sorry wrong word! Doesn't solve my problem.
I loved PaintShop Pro, but I lost my free copy, and now it's commercial.
I use a program called paint.net. It's free.
They say it's compatible with win7, don't know about win8.
Google
Dogpile
You set your preferences then add it to your browser. It's my default search engine.
Don't know if it's on Windows 8 but, when I got my computer with Windows 7 on it, Windows Picture It, Premium 10 was already loaded. Not professional level, but it does everything that I do with pictures, and not too hard to use.
Let me say thank you to one and all who have taken the time to stop in here and give me the benefit of your knowledge. After many fits and starts I tried out most of the sites you gave to me to try. Many of them were just too complicated for my simple wants. I have finally settled on Photo Gallery which seems to have the simplest approach to just cleaning up some of the obvious faults in the pictures I have. My first project will be the rebuilding of my picture libraryof the flood of 55 in Winsted. I have by looking at the detail with them found that the Ct. State Historical Society was the source for the pictures that I found and it was to them that I gave all the pictures, negatives, and rights to after my Dad passed. The exceptions were those that my Dad had given over to the Army while they were there. I guess I am on safe ground anyway.
Once more, my profound thanks to you all!! tsula
