Sickly fascinating

[Edited to add directions]

So my husband likes this sauce... it's a local thing from southern Illinois (where he spent his teen years)... and it's kind of like A-1 steak sauce, but better (IMO).

Anyway, since it's a local thing, I have to order it for him when we run out. This last time I ordered a case, they sent along a helpful recipe booklet. Usually I toss them without reading them, but in this case, I decided to take a look.

One thing that stood out was there is an honest-to-bob recipe for corn pone. That aside... there is one recipe that is sickly fascinating to me and I'm kinda wanting to try it out just to see what it tastes like.

Now you might be thinking what could possibly be sickly fascinating about a recipe that comes with a savory A1-like sauce? I will tell you...

It's Unbelievable Fudge.

First of all, adding a dash of A1-like sauce to fudge is honestly not something I would think of doing... it isnt something that I would immediately think "OMG that's nuts" either. Some savory sauces and sweet things go well, and it isnt a ton of sauce in the fudge... but what really stops me dead in my tracks is the very first ingredient listed...

Velveeta cheese... yeah, you read that correctly... Velveeta... fucking... cheese....

And it isnt like a table spoon/slice... its 12 whole ounces of Velveeta... brick in cardboard... doesnt need refrigeration... cheese

So then I'm reading this recipe thinking, no way, it has to be a typo... they must have put the wrong title on the wrong list of ingredients... its just a hometown sauce company.

Nope.

Recipe is as follows

12 oz Velveeta Cheese

1 C butter/margarine

6 oz unsweetened baking chocolate

2 T all purpose Bob Edson sauce

2lbs confectioners sugar

1t vanilla ex

1.5 C pecans

Place Velveeta, butter, chocolate and sauce in large microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2-4 min, stirring every minute until the mixture is smooth and well blended. Place the sugar in a large bowl. Add the chocolate mixture gradually, beating with an electric mixer at medium speed until well blended after each addition. Beat in vanilla, stir in pecans. Pour in greased 9x13 pan. Smooth the top and refrigerate until firm. Store in the refrigerator

I am sickly fascinated by this... It sounds like a sadistic joke for your mouth, arteries and colon... and yet... I want to make this monstrosity of midwestern chemical goop and taste it. I think I'm going to chicken out though...

Have you ever made something you were sickly fascinated by?

If you make it, I'll eat it. Grin.gif

I used to have a recipe for chocolate cake that included a bit of really finely ground black pepper.
