But night before last the jig was up caught in the act was the biggers Racoon Ive ever seen. Stands on hind legs is well over 3 feet tall. Figured I'd catch him in a live trap but wife says oh no he is just hungry. Takes a lot of bird seed to fill a racoon. Wonder if they eat corn.

I have to admit that I havent seen any Racoons around my place yet RMexR, but I did have a groundhog that hung around my little shack in the woods for a season. She found a way to get into the crawl space under my place to birth her young uns.

What a HUGE raccoon! That's one big boy!
I love animals and nature and flowers and all that stuff, and hope that it can all live peacefully in my yard. But, I must ask, and you don't have to answer, but have you pest-proofed your home so that wonderful, darling, bird-seed eating raccoon can't come inside? You probably have and are just fine-- but raccoons, as darling as they are, can become real pests when they decide to live inside... And they can also eat cats and small dogs...
Anyway, if I can help, let me know... There is a whole section in my Guidebook about pest-proofing your home...
That's a big un. I had a coon come out and torture Big Dawg last night late. I spotted him and watched him scuttle off into the big woods. He did turn and scowl at me a couple of times. He might have shot me the finger but I'm not sure. It was late.
Mostly Bear up here, though I can hear the Yotes off in the mountains. They don't want to have anything to do with a Pyr. The Bear pretty much know I've got him contained. I had the biggest Bear I've seen in this neck of the woods cross the dirt road and just stand under me and dawg on the porch. He ambled off in no hurry at all. We have an army of Turkeys come through. It's gotten so dawg just doesnt' even pay heed to them. They ignore him as well.
Coons are great but they can be vicious little critters if cornered. They've been known to be rabid as well.
Here is a part of the Guidebook that discusses raccoons and keeping them from damaging your home.. The guidebook was written during a Source Reduction Grant for the USEPA... Start on page 70.
Here is a link to the whole guidebook, if you want to explore a bit more! You'll have to scroll down the list-- it is the Source Reduction Grant report.
This next one is going to be long, so I'm going to send it to you via email-- It's a part of my website I'm working on!
Good luck and much love to you!
Got a link up yet for your web site?
It's been published on the Adobe business site as a trial... But, I'll open it up and see exactly where it is!
Here is the link! I have a LOT of work to do, yet!! Years worth, actually...
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!
Thank you! I've got you bookmarked and I'll take a serious look when it is not so late.
I hope it doesn't bore you to death!
Thanks RMexR.
Based on what Dowser and Tex posted I think I should have been able to follow a link to view your Racoon, but no such link is showing up for me.
Since I spent 50 years living in Dallas I still get a great thrill from all the wildlife that now surrounds me in my Hermitage, even though Ive been watching them for 10 years now.
I think the most surprising sight was when two young cows broke out of my neighbors pasture, pushed through my woods and slowly walked past my window as they casually preceded up to the front street, using my driveway.
That sight tickled my fancy and I wish I had caught it on film to share. .
I love the wildlife, and that is one really big racoon.
We have a pair of bald eagles at the front of our property, and most days I can watch them fishing the lake. We also have our resident goshawk that lives in a tree about 50 yards from our patio.
We also have the usual suspects, racoon, ground hogs, shunks, deerand my favorite Amos the Armidillo, who lives under our deck.
Thanks for the story.
It sounds like a Three Mile Island Raccoon.
Dang. Those Armadillos are making tracks. When I was living in Oregon and the Hipsters got too nasty in their rants about the South I always threatened to bring back a pair of Armadillos and a bunch of Kudzu to spread around.
One of our low rent entertainments back when used to be going out at night and chasing Armadillos. Those little suckers are surprisingly fast. They can be caught though. Much fun was had by all involved. Well, maybe with the exception of the Armadillos. No harm no foul to em though. We just let em loose again.
Amos has become quite tame over the last 6 months. He doesn't try to run away, or hop as it may be. He just keeps digging for bugs, looks at me once and a while and goes back to digging...LOL
They're all so cute!
Grandpa was like this, Kavika-- they all lived together in harmony. It was great, growing up with that...
If he decides to run away from home and makes a dash for it, grab him by the tail.
Racoons are so cute! Make sure your pets are up on their vaccines, racoons can carry rabies and have no outward signs. Also, often if there is one raccoon visiting a successful food site there will be more shortly. Don't let that get around or your dinner tab is going to go way up.
I'm not a good one to give advice on this, though, my birds and squirrels have almost put me in the poor house, but I would love to have a few raccoon visitors too.
