I hope that he is still alive, but really doubt that he is... At some point, he would reach the water table and drown, if he wasn't already crushed.
Sinkholes are a nightmare-- totally unpredictable. I'm wondering if some of the newer techniques for remote sensing or even SLAR (which I think is Side-Looking Radar of some sort), would be useful to find them before things were built on top of them...
My sympathy for this poor man and his family!
SLAR (which I think is Side-Looking Radar of some sort
I hadn't heard of this before but it's a great idea. I to send my sympathy to the family, you just couldn't help but feel his brother's pain as he tried to rescue the fallen man.
Dowser, it is so good to see you, I'm sure trying hard to break free from the vine and need a positive place to come to. So far this place looks very positive.
I'm glad to see you, too!!! I know that it's hard to break that dependence on seeing your friends there-- and I hope more people come here! for sure!
I love it here-- very friendly, and lots of good friends!
Take care, and have some fun here!
LOL...
I don't know that anything can be done to predict them, but it seems to me like there should be SOMETHING... I need to research this and see what is possible and what isn't.
I expect it now. I have an unraveled length of rope with a grapple attached to the rafters....just in case. Also, I tied a shotgun to it, becasue you never know what is down there.
Seriously, that's gotta be about the worst luck of all time. Definitely feel bad for the dude. I didnt read the link yet, but I saw a report that his brother was there and tried to grab the dudes hand but the guy fell anyway.
Yes, Yes, and Yes.
Yep. The removal of groundwater removes some of the support from the top, due to the buoyancy, so they collapse. Big mess!
There is a Far Side cartoon from many years ago-- a young man is walking down the street toward an intersection, jiving to his boom box, and around the corner is a herd of elephants, thundering toward the same intersection. The caption read, "Brian has a rendezvous with destiny..."
I couldn't help but think of that cartoon when I first read about this. I'm so sorry for that poor man, and can only imagine at his terror of being swallowed by the earth. I feel sure that he is dead, and am so sorry for his family.
Well no two ways around it, this family has a lot of decisions to make. Time to find a new neighborhood to live in and prepare to say goodbye to someone they cannot even bury.
When my brother passed away almost 2 years ago we were able to say goodbye and see him, well some of the family members were.
Goodness I certainly hope you don't really believe this man was cursed by God.
OK. (^_^)
Last night, they announced that they were suspending the search for the man-- it must be too dangerous, with little chance for success. Poor man.
Come on over Wendy, Georgia will let you in.
Poor man and his family. I cannot imagine how horrified he must have been and his poor brother.
Wear a helmet and a life vest then tie a rope around yourself and tie the other end to something large and hopefully stable. Now go to bed and sleep well.
Seriously you may want to do some research about the geology of the area where you live.
Wendy, where do you live? I don't mind looking up stuff, if you need it-- you can email me, if you like.
I'm not an expert on sinkholes, but I do understand groundwater.
This really makes me want to stay in Georgia. We get to go home in September. Finally
!!! Germany has been interesting but it's time to get back to America.
No shyte. Your number just dang well came up on the Big Board when you drop into a sink hole just a laying on your bed. That's about 30 miles from my brothers house down there.
Their little Mall started falling into a sink hole some time ago but they just flopped it full of concrete and crossed their fingers. It's still there. I don't cast my shadow in Malls anyhow but that is one I avoid like the plague.
I hope to tell you, I've got enough dang problems without getting sucked into a chasm. I'm just gonna stay up here in the mountains and look out for widow makers and rocks falling on my noggin.
Hey, we are all headed for the OD Corral, so who knows?
That is one tragic and sad story.
We'll all be glad when you are home again!
I'm sure you can give her some valuable info, Dowser. I would certainly want to have some clue regarding the geological nature of the earth below me !
I lived in a little house out by the sinks many moons ago. Don't know what it is like now but Tallahassee was a rockin burg back when.
Yup. In fact, it was about 100 yards from here.
It was pretty wild at the time. They had a life guard tower and guard who mainly kept an eye out for gators. If one toodled close he'd yell, "Gator! Gator! Gator!" and folks would swim for shore. A graduate student got himself semi et by one while I was in the area.
I had a pal who died in one of the sinks there cave diving. It was a tragic event and not terribly uncommon at the time. He was extremely young to be taking his leap off the mortal coil. I guess we are all headed for the OD Corral but it is sure sad when friends leave us hardly whiskered or grown up.
Ted Bundy was making rounds in Tallahassee when I was there as well. I got involved in that case. Yike. That's a long ass story though. More like a novella.
I'm glad to hear it still retains its somnolent nature. We always just considered that part of Flarda as AlaGada. If you catch the drift.
best in your direction
That is pretty awful. I just heard the story. I never did any snorkeling there and made a distinct effort to stay away from the gator side.
It was a bit unnerving when we sank a canoe but we kept good lookout....
