122 Year Roslyn, NY Hyde Family Home
The Hyde Roslyn Estate in New York
This property was purchased around 1890 by my maternal grandfather, Charlie Hyde , and photo here is just after the addition was completed in 1908. This is located in the olde part of Roslyn, NY. Some years later it was sold and I understand it burned down. I don't know exactly when.
My mom, Genevieve Hyde Courtois was born in this house in 1909. Grand-dad Hyde was already a millionaire at this time. Unfortunately, he lost his fortune, like many others, in 1929. He did retain the Manhattan apartment at 72 Park Avenue, and a Winter Home in Coral Gables, Florida. Mom was not very diligent in keeping up with the details and most of this information is in my head from having heard some of the stories when I was young,
A large rambling home that is no longer....just a memory long past. Mom has been gone since 1966.
Grew up just a few miles from there, well maybe ten miles. Syosset. Roslyn is still a pretty town. In fact, I know a person here who lives there!
I know a couple people who live there. I lived in Port Washington right down by shore. Actually at 60 Richards Road in 1945-47. I started the third grade at St. Peters of Alcantra, just on the Sands Point side of Port Washington township line.
I was in Roslyn this past fall Charlie; what a delight!
:~)
Perrie hosted a really cool scenic tour and we were able to view many of the older homes and mansions (old and new) in the area. The place just oozes with history and there are more stories than can be told or heard in one lifetime.
Nice article Charlie and thanks Bud!
Charlie,
It must be Roslyn day! I just posted an article about a friend of my daughters' who played with Billy Joel.
That house is amazing! I am going to go down to our historical society to see if I can dig up anything more about the house and your family. Who knows what I'll find? You have one interesting family!
Thanks Charlie, what a gorgeous house. I saw Hyde Estate in NY, and I thought maybe it was like Hyde Park from FDR notoriety. Shows you what I know about NY!! It's fun to read about people who really knew that area, and still do. Must be an awesome place.
Gorgeous area. My brother still lives on the north shore.
