MANS INTERIOR ENEMIES

8751_discussions.bmp

This reflection is broken down into three aspects: CHRIST, THINK, & PRAYER. It is part of a daily devotion book entitled My Daily Bread published by: THE CONFRATERNITY OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD

This comes from the, SELF CONQUEST THROUGH MORTIFICATION section.

CHRIST:

MY CHILD, nothing gives you more trouble 8752_discussions.jpg than your unthinking self. Until you have acquired control of your animal thinking desires, your proud ambitions, and your foolish envy of others, you cannot enjoy My heavenly peace.

  • If your heart is not at rest, it is because you are controlled by this blind self within you. Your heart is not set on Me, but on the comforts, enjoyments, achievements, or security of this life. Because you are so self-centered and full of worldly desires you are tempted to sin.

  • Whatever is not from Me and leads not to Me is bad for you. Some of the saints often asked themselves the question: How does this help me for eternal life? That is very valuable question. If you live by it, there will be less waste of time and more good work in your daily life.

  • Your feelings and desires are good only as long as you keep them under control. Once they become your masters, they will turn your life into a slavery. You will have no peace within yourself, and you will even destroy the peace of those around you. You will become jealous, envious, ambitious, and difficult to live with. You will often omit what you ought to do, and do things which you should not do. You will become too disinterested in doing things for others, and not interested enough in what you should be doing.

  • You can make a better world by following Me. Begin with yourself. Learn My truth and let it govern your passions, your every desire, all your fears, and each word and deed in your daily life.

THINK:

The man who has not learned to mortify himself, has within himself the enemies of peace and goodness. He is easily aroused against those who thwart or oppose his selfish desires. He sees the obligations of others, but he remains blind to his own. He blames little things in others, while he excuses bigger faults in himself.

PRAY:

My Jesus, You conquered the world of passion and selfishness. By Your life of mortification, prayer, work, loyalty to the Father's Will, You merited for me all the necessary graces to overcome self in my daily activities. I wish to begin a mortified life. I want to practice self-control as often as I can, even when there is no question of sin. By my mortification, I hope to obtain greater graces to fight greater temptations. If I am ready to suffer for You now, I will be prepared to fight for You then. I hope in You for the strength to begin. You deserve this of me. Let me forget self and think only of Your all-perfect goodness. Amen.

As Lent approaches tradition has it that we usually give up something.

If you choose candy, booze, or some other "thing" you will simply resume it when Lent is ended. On the other hand if you change a bad habit, or start a new habit, when Lent ends you will give yourself a chance to better the life of others and your own at the same time.

Thank about it!

God bless you.

Charlie:

Being a bit irreverent, I'm thinking of giving up self deprecation. How's the golf game going?

giving up self deprecation

I managed to do that most of my life...it's a lousy way to go!

Rain and more rain...maybe tomorrow will be better. Just can't play in the rain.

Something to be reminded of daily.

Thank you Charlie.

Not Catholic myself so am interested in your own tradition(s) surrounding Lent.

:~)

A few of the actions my wife and I have done for Lent:

  • The invited Dominican priest, from the Order of Preachers,to our parish for what we call the Lenten Mission. Tonight will be the last homily before Ash Wednesday tomorrow.
  • This am we met with group of seven to prepare for the 1st Sunday of Lent. We will meet 5 more times. We shared our faith's and journey's into the church; then, we discussed the scripture readings for this coming Sunday, which we call Lecto Divino: We read, meditate, unpack, and apply the Gospel for this coming Sunday (Lk 4:1-13) to our daily lives now. The leader posed several questions about our daily lives about all the readings for Sunday. There are 4 readings: Deuteronomy, Romans, Psalms, and the Gospel of Luke. BTW Mass is said every day of the year in every Catholic Church in the world. except Good Friday
  • Another tradition of Lent is give up something to pay homage to Our Lord for his suffering, death and resurrection for our salvation
  • During Holy Week the Stations of the Cross are prayed in the church, and on Easter Vigil (Sat night before Easter) new Catholics are invited into the Church after a 9 month R.C.I.A class once a week. We have 41 new catacumens and candidates this year.
  • More prayer than usual is encouraged of all Catholics during the Lenten season.

Ciao,

cc
