Has Anyone Used WordPress?
I had a web site a couple of years ago, when I hosted the Louisville VineMeet. I used Webstarts, which was reasonably priced, ($7.95/mo.), and fairly easy to use. The web site did what I wanted it to do, and was attractive. But, they kept sending me hundreds of emails, and had raised their prices to $150 per year, on sale for $100 per year, but only payable in 5 year increments, which ticked me off to no end, so I dropped them like a stone. I don't have $500 to drop on a web site.
Besides, my domain name was one letter off an abortion clinic in Kansas, (EGAD), so you can imagine some of the comments I got! (As in, for PETE'S SAKE-- How could I do that? It reminded me of the time when my phone number was two digits scrambled from one of the local bars. Aunt Lois was sick, my father was sick, both seriously, my grandmother was very ill, and I got phone calls all night, from drunks asking me how long I stayed open... After a couple of months, I looked like a raccoon.)
However, I'm now looking into starting up another web site. Nothing to compete with here, but as a place to publish my best articles and stories, etc. I've been looking at the WordPress site. It appears to be much like Webstarts, but better. Has anyone here ever used it?
Does it require an intimate knowledge of HTML language? Can one use the site to cobble together a web page, using available themes, or do I have to know what is REALLY going on to do it?
Thanks, anyone, for your comments and help!
Thanks for your help and advice. I'm no computer whiz, and the HTML language is tough for me! I can do it, if I have to, but I'm not good at it!
One thing I really liked about it, was that it has all the features that I really liked, and may want to use in the future. It appeared to be expandable...
Thanks!
Thank you, sweet Neetu! Your help is invaluable! ALWAYS!
I love you, dear friend!
I have to say that I found Wordpress much harder to use then blogger. Not asinitiative and I built this site. And blogger is free. It sounds like a good match for what you want to do with it. Krishna is an expert on Blogger, too! He's a most helpful guy and I am sure he wouldn't mind helping.
Thanks, Grae!
Please, I'm not leaving here or anything, nor will I be attracting bloggers. But I would like a site where I can publish my writings, and even sell stuff if I want to, down the line...
I'll look into those sites and bookmark them for future reference!
Krishna is a dear friend! Maybe he would offer some advice!
It has to be something I can do myself with some study-- I don't want to bug anyone about it! Besides, dear Perrie, I don't have the time to spend like you do!
I'll check out blogger, too! Thanks!
Oh Krish won't mind and neither would I. I had a parenting blog on it and found it very easy to use. You could tinker with it. It becomes very obvious in a short time how to do things.
You are always helpful to your friends Dowser. It wouldn't be a bad thing to except help from your friends once in a while.
Dear friend! That is so sweet! I'm checking a lot of things out! I'm just not good at html...
You shouldn't need html with blogger. But I will double check for you.
OK I checked and you point and click, just like you used to. The formats are somewhat limited but can be changed once you pick the basic blue print.
That sounds good to me!
It seems to be very versatile! Thanks for the links! I downloaded the others and spent about an hour printing up everything I could find about WordPress today... I can't do anything until I get paid, for sure. Finally, the Christmas wasteland will be over.
I also checked some domain names to register. I can't think of anything good! I wish I were clever!
Ok, I'm asking. I'm a nice little old lady that writes stories. I am pro-environment. The web site will have stories, environmental articles, artlces about flowers, etc. Later, I might want to sell stuff. And don't ask me what, I'm open to ideas... Some day, I'm going to retire and would like to do something besides rot in the corner... I'm pretty normal, I hope. What's something cute? What would you suggest?
I tired Dowser's Place and it's available. But somehow, nyeh.
Thanks, Grae-- I need to think some more!!!
Ok, as things "progress", what I really want to do is have a web site. One where I can sort of put all my junk. And maybe, as time progresses, even sell native flower seeds, butterfly goodies and other stuff. And yeah, that's dumb, but I can't help it.
I'm looking into advertising, web hosting, web design, etc. What I think I really want to do is design a site with some software and then locate and sign up with a host to put it up. I want to do more research and have it available for people to click on for information and answers...
Such as, what kinds of butterflies am I likely to see in my state? What are their host plants and their feeding plants? How can I attract butterflies and wildlife to my yard? Could I contribute to a Wildlife Corridor? etc.
I haven't really furthered my research since I did the Guidebook to native plants, pollution prevention, etc. with the EPA grant... but that is where my heart lies. That, and writing. SO, I think that is the path I need to take.
I'd like to develop the website and get it ready to go before I publish it, so I can diddle around with it. and that will take a lot of time...
So, thanks, all of you! I don't think that WordPress is going to meet my needs. Nor is a blogger site, but I would like to be able to set up a blog on my website.
And, too, I'd like to advertise on my website, and AdSense via Google is MOST ANNOYING. They will not accept a hosted domain, which is why NV is having such trouble with them. And I want to be able to take PayPal, and do all kinds of stupid things.
Anyway, my first item to sell will likely be butterfly puddling rocks. I can drive about 20 miles and pull them out of the side of a road cut. And yeah, that sounds stupid, but people will pay big money for a concrete rock, why not a real one?
Especially one of Ordovician age with fossils in it?
So, I will likely select a web buildingsoftware this weekend, (now that I've gotten paid and can pay for something), and off I go into the thrills of web design! And take it one step at a time...
Any hints, anyone? Words of sage advice? Warnings? Cautions? Think I'm stupid?
I've got tons of catalogsfropm bulk native seed companies, so why couldn't I package my own native flower seeds? Each one designed to attract the butterflies of different states/regions? Y'all are witnessing the birth of an*idea*...
Thanks for anything you have to offer, especially encouragement!
what better place to go or visit than Dowser's Relm,.....oops did I say that out loud....
Now THAT's an idea, for sure!!!
Hmmmm, gotta go check that one out!
Dear Dowser, I have had a free WordPress website for a couple of years now. It is moderately simple to use once you've become used to the initial limitations. You might give it a try since it doesn't cost anything.
Been using WP for a couple of years have heard nothing like you describe. Love it and sales are increasing daily.
Thanks, Roy! I appreciate your help!
I tried to get into it but I just didn't find it friendly.
Me, either! I am not going to use it-- it's too involved...
Thanks, JT! I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner-- I have a hard time keeping up with comments sometimes...
Thanks so much for your help!
