Jihad in Nigeria

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden", is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.

On Sunday, a church was bombed, leaving eight people dead in Kaduna, one of the cities affected by the conflict. Although Boko Haram has not said it carried out the attacks, it has claimed responsibility for similar bombings across northern and central Nigeria.

Church metal detectors

But it is true that since Boko Haram started its insurgency, Christians have been living in constant fear.

Worshippers in Maiduguri, Nigeria

Women at some congregations in the north have been banned from carrying handbags to church
Many churches now have metal detectors that you have to go through.

Women have been told not to carry hand bags because of the fear that an attacker may come under the guise of a worshipper, hiding a gun or bomb in a hand bag.

The message that we, in the Christian Association of Kaduna, spread is that most Muslims are good people - and the small number who cause violence should not harm relations between the two communities.

'Unity schools'

When Muslims celebrated Eid al-Kabir last Friday, we got together with them at a popular roundabout in the city.

A tent was put up and after a ram slaughtered we ate together to strengthen our covenant

Two days later, a church was bombed.

He has been for a while and has actually been a great resource for these events as they unfold. I dare say there is no argument anymore that if these were muslims being treated as such by non-muslims, it would be shouted from every media rooftop; islamists are great atattractingPR. Makes me frickin' sick to mystomach.

Here's the question; how do Christians abroadrespond? To be the peace loving folk we believe that Christ exemplified, is also to misinterpret who Christ was. He did get angry and at times violent in word and deed. Do American Christians respond with prayer? With food donations and offers of safe housing? With physical protection? I believe that Christians are allowing their brothers and sisters in Egypt and other places, to be sacrificed to themachinationsof allah's most violent follower's agendas.

I believe many respond with-- denial. There's a lot of "positive thinking" going around-- peope don't want to face unpleasant things.

Aother aspect of this: regardless of who the victims are, many people willl refuse to condemn the perps when they are Muslim, because that wuld leave them open to be accused of being "racists.> (Islam ...a race?)

Only occasionally, and only if it relates to a current NT story.

Heh :-)

Ya know krish I have personally went around-and-around with this. Christianity has had it's own history of bigotry and warfare...I know this is true. what I find particularlyintriguingis where the rubber met the road. WhereChristianswere truly Christians and stood up for right and wrong and theirbrothersand sisters. Beyond that, what is right or wrong with the way humans treateachother? A year or two ago on NV I was arguing back and forth and was struck by a challenge (at least I took itthatway) by Gillis, a fella I highlyrespect. We were arguing about thestanceof modern evangelicalChristianityand their view of the ME and Israel. And then I remembered WWII, took a honest look at much of the evangelical shit on TV,and tried to remember where all the Christians were during WWII...

I could never bring myself to fulfill that promise and write that article. because Christians have pussed out helping the way they should.

Aother aspect of this: regardless of who the victims are, many people willl refuse to condemn the perps when they are Muslim, because that wuld leave them open to be accused of being "racists.> (Islam ...a race?)

yeah, well,... we all know that voicing opinionscontraryto political correctness is just flushed.

Fair Question.

Actually that was part of the equation during WWII; the lack of information compared to days influx, and what was trulyhappening to Jewsin Nazi Germany and occupied countries. Jews were helped by many people of all faiths and creeds, but overall the Christian Church did not put itself out to stand up to Hitler. When I compare that to much of the Evangelical broadcasting that is popular, I'm convinced that there is an attitude present now just as there was then. There are many Christians that may support Israel, but there is a large and vocal group of Evangelicals who's sole support of Israel is based on the belief that they are now God's chosen, and that Israelwill suffer the consequences of losing God's favor. This also happens to coincide with the belief that God will usher in a new eraof peace installed by Christians; Jews will have to accept Jesus for salvation both physically and spiritually, or be handed over to their enemies.

This same replacement theology is moreethnicallydriven than ideologically; Jews are still blamed by some Christians for the death of Jesus. Combined with modern liberal influences within the Church that are ultra-supportive of any underdog like thePalestiniansand you have a modern Church that equivocates in it's support of Israel.

But what's the surprise? Christians are being slaughtered all over the world at this very moment (many, many studies point to the fact that more in this century by far than any other) and yet many of us sitidlyby, twiddlingour thumbs, prayin' for their safety...our own brothers and sisters.

I think there is a way to look at some of this which breaks it down a little differently. There may be a formula that encompasses much of what you bring in, but not all of what you bring in.

I would very much like to hear your thoughts.

In other discussions I've brought up points that exemplify other Christian attitudes, as there are many, many that valueisrael'sstruggle and support the Country's right toselfdetermination, but the focus is always on the louder and richer. Televangelists hold a powerful sway and alignpolitically to the highest bidder (usually) that their own core willallowfor.

For a long time now, The People of The Book have been manipulated into squaring off against each other when it looks as if they might start working too closely together. I believe there is such a time know.

Thinking about it. Might not write about it, but thinking about it.

That's what she said.
