Super Fast-Charging Battery Design
In the use of rechargeable batteries to store power there are two big limitations which need to be overcome [especially for use in the electric car] :
1] What is the energy density per unit weight and also per unit of volume ?
2] How long does it take to charge up the battery ?

The electric car is not the only use for batteries such as these . They can be used in portable devices such as cell phones and portable tools .
Their use in electric grid storage is particularly valuable . This can be used for storage of renewable energy sources which are intermittent in timing such as wind , solar , wave power , hydrodynamic [dams] etc . And one more thing : anytime an electric power plant turns power off due to lower demand or for maintenance they need a method to dissipate the power currently being generated . But if they could store that power instead of just dissipating it there could be considerable energy savings from that process . Such batteries show great promise for all of the above uses .
To meet these application needs here is a fairly new discovery in battery technology out of a South Korean University . It claims to solve BOTH of the above mentioned limitations of current battery technology : energy density and charge time . Yes , this would be a truly revolutionary advance if it comes out of the laboratory setting still functioning as claimed .

Electric car charging time could be cut from hours to just minutes by battery technology being developed in Ulsan, South Korea.....
Professor Cho says the breakthrough technology allows lithium-ion batteries to recharge at least 30 times as fast as current lithium-ion batteries and up to 120 times faster.
This means that drivers of electric cars could recharge about as fast as the drivers of gasoline-powered vehicles once the infrastructure to support this technology is perfected.....
Professor Cho said that in this demonstration the scientists using this technology fully recharged an electric car battery in one minute.

If that data is accurate, that is an amazing battery and it will change the whole outlook for the viability of the electric car.

This is yet another of many new applications for nanotechnology . It is an amazing field and it is just warming up .
