Say goodbye to your internet use on Monday ?
I realize this NT group is so tech savvy that talking about this particular malware is not going to concern anyone here ... maybe . But on the off chance that you haven't heard about the hacked DNS server scam which was donemore than a year ago I am providing this info as a service to you here at NT .
The problem began when hackers created fake DNS servers a while back . Computers became infected with the links to those fake servers instead of the real DNSservers . If you need an explanation of what those are , see the explanation and diagram below .
Here is a link to the full story
and a quick exec summary of what to do in case you haven't checked your computer for infection yet :
---------
To check whether a computer is infected, users can visit a website run by the group brought in by the FBI:
http://www.dcwg.org
The site includes links to respected commercial sites that will run a quick check on the computer, and it also lays out detailed instructions if users want to actually check the computer themselves.
Here is another link to look at that addresses this issue .
It includes this useful diagram for those who don't know what a DNS server does :
Fero , I expect this article is not your 1st exposure to this issue , right ? Although with all those computers to check up on it can't hurt to have a link to a quick way to verify if your systems are clean ...
Great reminder Rich,
I just checked my computer and it's OK... at least in this regard. Thanks for reminding the membership that they should run this test. Better safe than sorry.
It's good to have a trusty tech guy to check out these sites for NT before hand . Then you all can just go to the verified links and test out your systems . Don't applaud , just throw money .
BTW , if anyone does have an infected system report it here and I'll see what I can find about how to deal with it ...
Thanks Rich! Checked and everything is ok.
Some people wouldn't know if their CPU was attached to their motherboard unless someone reminds them to check ... or their head is attached to their neck ? Present company excepted , of course ...
There was an hilarious British comedy series called "The IT Crowd" a few years back . The main characters were the IT dept of a large company . Their big question was :"Have you turned it off and then back on ?"
Thanks for the heads up Rich just finished checking all my units and they are clean as of now. Great service to the members.
A-OK !
Ok clean, unless thisinfectedit?
Nah ... You're good . This is the FBI's choice ... c'mon !
