ANDERSON SILVA and STEVEN SEAGAL

This here is what I personally call a clinic, and just watching this taught me something I had never considered regarding fighting somebody.

When I observed an aikido class [to decide if I wanted to study it there] I noticed that many of the students had knee braces , including the instructor ! That's when I decided this was not the class for me ...

That is interesting actually. A big part of learning Aikido is learning how to fall properly. Sounds like they weren't doing it right. I can see that though, since every Joe and Sally with a belt and the desire can open their own studio. I once went to a studio in Austin when I was thinking bout brushing up on my skills, and the two instructors were a 5'2" 90 lb chick and a woman in a wheelchair. Reality....no matter how bad ass they might have been, they werent going to be able to perform proper locks or throws against me unless I allowed it, and so I didnt see how studying there would have benefited me at all. At 6'4" and 220, with knowledge of the style they were teaching, I was simply too big for them. They werent going to be able to take control of my personal space, and so were basically useless to me. Needless to say, after one class, where my suspicions were proven correct, I did not bother going back.

[[A big part of learning Aikido is learning how to fall properly. ]]

I don't think it was falling technique that was the problem . Knee injuries and elbow injuries are not common in Judo classes . But apparently they are common in badly taught Aikido classes . Real matches [not practice] in Aikido often result in such injuries . Training practice should not . But if they have not clearly distinguished between practice and actual combat such injuries can happen easily . Notice how slowly the training sessions are performed in the video . That is essential if you want to avoid injuries .
